Paleovember 2023, Arctodus simus!
Roaming North America until around 12 thousand years ago, this bear is colloquially known as a 'short-faced' bear, due to it's snout appearing far shorter than modern bears. The reality is that the appearance is something of an illusion; the snout wasn't actually shorter, the whole skull was actually much DEEPER. They're also members of a different group of bears than the more familiar ones known today, known as the Tremarctinae, with the only surviving member of this group being the modern spectacled bears of South America.
When it came to Arctodus simus, the males of this species were absolutely huge, standing up to 11 feet tall when upright. They would have been powerhouses of the Ice Age, with their long legs allowing them to travel vast distances in search of food.
