summary: it’s your wedding day, everything is perfect. but he came back. will you say ‘yes’ to your fiance or give up everything and go straight back to him?
not proofread!
──────────────────────
this story is part of my collection of fics inspired by One Direction songs. you can check out other stories here!
──────────────────────
the morning sun flooded the hotel suite, lighting up the flowers carefully arranged on the table. you sat with your wedding dress beside you, your hands slightly trembling as you reviewed the guest list once more on your phone.
“everything’s perfect it’s going to be beautiful” your mother said, fixing a strand of your hair that kept escaping, trying different hairstyles for the wedding
you smiled, but your heart was racing. the countdown was almost over and the anxiety was tightening in your chest.
“shotaro’s the only one left to confirm” your younger sister commented, playing distractedly with the family dog.
you swallowed hard, pretending not to care.
“i doubt he’ll come” you said, though your voice came out weaker than you’d hoped.
“why did you invite him anyway?” she asked you
“because mom insisted”
the phone vibrated on the table. a new email.
“it’s from the hotel” your wedding planner informed you “shotaro checked in here yesterday”
silence fell over the room. you stared at the screen, the world seemingly freezing for a moment.
then, the past came rushing back in flashes.
the muffled noise of the airport filled the air, indistinct voices, suitcases rolling across the cold floor, announcements echoing from the speakers. the two of you stood there, face to face, as if the world had stopped for that moment. the heavy silence between you weighed more than any words.
your heart ached with every beat and tears threatened to fall but you fought to hold them back.
“shotaro…” your voice came out barely audible, almost a whisper “i don’t know if we can keep going like this”
he furrowed his brow, eyes locked on yours, searching for any certainty in your words.
“you know i love you” you continued, trying to gather strength “but you’re chasing your dreams your career. you have to live all of that. and i… i have my own path my goals. i can’t give them up now”
your hand trembled when he held it, gripping tightly as if he wanted to keep you there, close, yet understanding what you needed.
“i promise one day you’ll change your mind” he said, voice rough “and maybe if i’m still here we can try again”
the final boarding call echoed through the terminal, cutting short what little remained of the conversation.
you turned away, feeling the pain of each step pulling you away from what was once your whole world.
you shook your head, leaving your memories behind and returning to reality.
the hotel felt bigger now, colder.
you knew he was there, just a few doors away.
and nothing after this would ever be the same.
──────────────────────
the soft whisper of the suite’s air conditioning couldn’t drown out the storm inside you. the white dress hanging carefully on the rack looked like it weighed a ton. you tried to focus on the final vendor lists but the persistent notification on your phone kept drawing your attention.
his name flashed on the screen: shotaro. even after everything, even after all this time, he was here. in the same hotel, on the same floor.
your heart sped up, your chest tightened. part of you wanted to run to the door and lock yourself away forever but another part, curious and restless, surged you to go. to look. to face it.
you walked down the stairs, your steps echoing through the quiet hotel corridors. he was in the lobby, eyes fixed on his phone screen, unaware of your arrival.
“shotaro” your voice came out lower than expected, almost a whisper.
he looked up slowly, eyes widening for a moment before a shy smile appeared, though it carried a mixture of surprise and nervousness.
“you… you really came” he said, voice faltering slightly, like he wasn’t sure what to say.
you frowned, fighting the whirlwind of emotions threatening to tear down your composure.
“i heard you were here. i just wanted to know… why? why now?” your voice cracked a bit but you tried to keep control.
he stepped forward, getting closer but still respecting the distance.
“i know i shouldn’t show up like this not on your wedding weekend but… i needed to see you. to know if you’re really happy. if that decision you made still brings you peace”
you looked at him, noticing the small imperfections, the marks of time and distance, and still, that connection that seemed to survive everything.
“i am happy shotaro. i’m marrying a good man someone who respects me who treats me well… someone who chose to stay”
he didn’t answer right away just looked at you with narrowed eyes like he was trying to see beyond your words.
“are you saying that to me or to yourself?”
you hesitated, just for a second. but it was enough.
“it doesn’t matter. my life is moving forward. i made a choice”
“did you really?” he countered, his voice low but firm “or did you just choose what was easier?”
your chest tightened but you held your chin high.
“i’m not throwing everything away for an old feeling”
“even if that feeling still exists?”
silence was the only answer you could give.
──────────────────────
you were back in the suite but it felt like you’d left part of yourself in the lobby. the conversation with shotaro echoed in your thoughts, crashing against the walls of your chest like a relentless wave.
when night fell he sent a simple message
“can i see you? just to talk. one last time”
you took a while to answer. but you did.
“come”
minutes later a soft knock on the door. you took a deep breath before opening it.
shotaro stepped in slowly, his eyes scanning the room before settling on you, in your white hotel robe, bare face, eyes that said everything your lips wouldn’t.
“you’re beautiful” he whispered.
you crossed your arms, uneasy.
“shotaro if this is another attempt to make me back out—”
“it’s not” he cut you off gently “i just… i need you to know what i felt. what i still feel”
you sat on the edge of the bed. he remained standing, nervous, like he was walking on glass.
“i respected it when you left. when you decided you needed someone more stable more present someone with a less uncertain life. i understood. but i never accepted it”
you lowered your eyes.
“i needed peace. predictability. someone who would be there”
“and is he?” shotaro asked, his voice cracking for the first time “does he give you that?”
“he does” you replied too quickly “he’s good to me. he’s everything you couldn’t be”
there was a long pause. he sat beside you, not touching, just close enough for you to feel the warmth of his presence.
“do you love him?” he asked in a whisper.
you closed your eyes for a second, searching for an answer that made sense.
“i care about him. i feel safe with him. he never broke my heart”
“but he never made your heart beat fast the way i did, did he?”
you held your breath.
“shotaro… why are you doing this to me? why now?”
he leaned in slightly, his expression vulnerable.
“because i let you go once. and it was the worst thing i’ve ever done. now i’m here. if you say you’ve forgotten me that you feel nothing anymore i’ll leave tomorrow morning and never come back”
you looked into his eyes. for a second, everything stopped. the hotel, the wedding, the promise of tomorrow with another man.
“i…” your voice failed but your eyes said it all.
he smiled faintly, sadly
“i know. you still love me”
you didn’t deny it. but you didn’t confirm it either.
you sat in silence, side by side. the weight of what existed between you filled every inch of the room.
and for the first time in a long while… you didn’t know what to do.
──────────────────────
the clock read nearly 2 a.m. the room was quiet, only the sound of the wind tapping against the window. shotaro was still sitting in the armchair by the bed, eyes down, fingers laced. you paced, restless, conflicted, feeling your heart tearing inside.
“i can’t do this to him” you finally said, breaking the silence “i can’t look into the eyes of someone who loves me and throw away everything we’ve built”
shotaro looked at you, his eyes glistening.
“but can you do that to yourself?”
you shook your head, trying to hold back the tears.
“i chose this path. and even if my heart is… messy right now it doesn’t change the fact that he’s a good person. he’s never hurt me. he loves me… nothing will make me change my mind about this”
“i love you” he replied firmly “in a way that hurts. in a way that never stopped. even when you left even when i tried to move on no one ever came close to what we had. no one”
you bit your lip, your throat tightening.
“but now it’s too late” he stood slowly, eyes red.
you didn’t say anything. you didn’t know what to say
“so that’s it? you’re really going to get married feeling all this?”
you nodded with difficulty, unable to look him in the eye.
“yes”
for a moment he just stood there, as if waiting for you to change your mind. waiting for any sign.
but it didn’t come.
“alright” he said with a small broken smile “i promised i’d leave if you asked”
“shotaro…”
he stepped closer and for the last time your eyes met his.
“i hope he really makes you happy. more than i ever could. because if he doesn’t…” his voice faltered and he forced himself to finish “…it’ll hurt to know you chose pain”
he reached out, gently touching your face
“goodbye y/n”
you didn’t respond. you just stood there, frozen, as he walked to the door and opened it slowly. the sound of the hallway broke the silence of the room and with one final look… he was gone.
or so you thought.
you collapsed to the floor as soon as the door closed, hugging your knees, your chest aching as if it had been ripped apart. silent tears fell and for the first time you said out loud what you hadn’t had the courage to tell him:
“i still love you”
what you didn’t know was that just a few meters away, leaning against the corridor wall, jaw trembling and hands stuffed in his pockets to stop himself from turning back… shotaro hadn’t really left.
──────────────────────
the sun had barely begun to rise when you heard a soft knock on the door.
you were still wearing the white robe, hair up in a messy bun, your face marked by a restless night and eyes that had cried more than they should’ve.
you opened the door and there he was. thomas.
the man you were supposed to marry in two days.
white shirt with the sleeves rolled up, a temporary wedding band on his finger, just to remind you all the time where you were supposed to be.
“is everything okay?” he asked with a gentle smile “i went out for a run and saw that you were still awake. i got worried.”
you forced a smile.
“just couldn’t sleep. pre-wedding nerves… you know?”
he nodded, stepping into the room like someone who already knew the way. he closed the door behind him and walked over to you, holding your hands with care.
“love… we don’t have to do this if it’s not what you want. i’m here because i love you. and what i want most is for you to be sure about this too.”
your heart tightened. he was sweet. calm.
a gentle man who had never raised his voice, who supported your every idea, who held your hand in the middle of the night without even asking why you were crying.
and that’s exactly what made everything harder.
“i do want this” you answered, guilt growing heavy in your chest “i really do”
he smiled and kissed your forehead
“then let’s do it together. no pressure, just love. like it’s always been.”
you swallowed hard.
“you’re good for me.”
“and you’re good for me too. you know, i never thought i’d fall in love like this again. after everything i’ve been through… you brought peace into my life.”
you closed your eyes tightly.
peace. the very word you had used about shotaro.
“i just want us to be happy, even with the doubts, with all the fears. we’re going to build a beautiful life together. i know it.”
you nodded, battling everything that was tearing you up inside.
“it’s going to be beautiful.”
thomas hugged you tightly, and you let your head rest against his chest.
it was comfortable. it was safe. but it didn’t make your heart race.
and when he whispered “i love you”
all you could think about was how different it sounded coming from another voice.
a voice that said it in silence, in glances, in chaos.
──────────────────────
the morning arrived bright and sunny.
clear skies, flawless flowers, everything exactly as you had dreamed these past months.
the dress hanging on the rack sparkled with tiny crystals. the veil already in place, the shoes waiting in the corner of the room.
but inside you, everything felt grey.
the bridesmaids chatted excitedly, laughing between makeup touch-ups, while the hairstylist fixed the last loose strands of your updo.
you answered with smiles and nods, but your mind was miles away.
“nervous, huh?” one of the bridesmaids asked, gently adjusting your veil
you gave a faint laugh
“a little.”
but it wasn’t nerves. it was something deeper.
it felt like every step was taking you in the wrong direction
but your feet refused to stop.
when you were left alone for a few minutes, you walked over to the window.
down below, everything was set: guests were starting to arrive, the altar decorated with white flowers, soft music filling the air.
and for a moment, your heart raced with a question that shouldn’t even exist:
“did he really leave?”
you hadn’t seen shotaro since that night.
no messages. no calls. nothing.
part of you wanted to believe he had left, that he respected your decision.
the other part… was hoping he hadn’t.
a knock at the door pulled you from your thoughts.
it was your father, ready to walk you down the aisle.
his eyes were emotional, and he smiled as soon as he saw you.
“you look stunning, sweetheart.”
you forced another smile. you were getting good at that.
“thank you, dad.”
walking down the aisle felt like an eternity.
the guests stood up, eyes fixed on you.
thomas waited at the altar with a soft smile, eyes glistening with emotion.
and as beautiful as everything was…
you felt like you were about to make a mistake you couldn’t undo.
you reached him. the officiant began to speak.
thomas held your hands, blinking slowly as if saying “everything’s going to be okay.”
but all you could think was ‘why didn’t he come?’
why hadn’t shotaro, with all that love, with all those words, come to stop you?
why had he let you go?
maybe he had accepted it.
maybe he understood this was truly your path.
but then… when the officiant said:
“if anyone here has any reason why these two should not be joined in matrimony, speak now or forever hold your peace…”
silence.
your heart pounded.
all eyes were on the altar.
and you?
you turned your head, almost unconsciously, scanning the crowd.
the entire room seemed to hold its breath.
but no one stood up.
shotaro really wasn’t there.
you swallowed your tears and looked back at thomas, who smiled warmly, squeezing your hand.
the officiant continued, and you knew, with pain and with clarity, that now, there was no turning back.
or was there?
the officiant took a deep breath, preparing for the final question.
“do you, y/n, take thomas to be your lawful wedded husband, to love him, honor him, in sickness and in health, for all the days of your life?”
the whole room held its breath.
you felt your heart pounding so loud it echoed through the church windows.
the dress weighed heavy on your body, the veil rested softly over your shoulders, and thomas’ hands held yours gently.
he smiled. he waited. he believed.
and then… you saw him.
at the very back.
behind the last row of chairs.
leaning against the wall as if he wanted to go unnoticed.
shotaro.
he was there.
you blinked, thinking your mind was playing tricks.
but it wasn’t.
he was really there.
his eyes locked on you, like no one else in that room existed.
like he was seeing you for the last time.
you stared at each other for long seconds.
and then, he mouthed it. “i love you.”
you didn’t hear it with your ears.
but you read it on his lips, and you understood.
he wasn’t there to stop anything, he just wanted you to know. even if it hurt, even if it was too late.
and he left.
turned slowly, walking toward the exit.
didn’t look back.
you felt something shatter inside you.
the officiant repeated
“y/n… do you take thomas as your husband?”
one second.
two.
three.
you took a deep breath, chest tight, eyes filling with tears.
“no.”
a whisper, but loud enough to silence everything around you.
guests gasped.
a murmur spread.
and you, with your voice trembling, continued
“i’m so sorry… truly. but i can’t.”
thomas blinked slowly. he didn’t seem surprised. just… sad. but calm.
“you still love him, don’t you?”
you nodded, eyes brimming with tears.
he smiled. a melancholic, beautiful smile full of understanding, his eyes also filled with tears
“go.”
and that was all you needed.
you turned on your heels, lifted your dress in your hands, and ran down the aisle
hearing the gasps, the whispers, and the hurried footsteps of your own heart.
you pushed open the doors, sunlight hitting your face, and searched.
“shotaro!” you cried, rushing down the church steps “shotaro!”
nothing.
“shotaro!” you screamed
you turned the corner of the church and saw him.
a few meters ahead, hands in his pockets, walking slowly.
“shotaro!” you cried again.
he stopped. turned around.
time froze.
you ran to him, dress dragging behind, eyes filled with tears.
and without a word, you threw your arms around his neck and held him tight.
shotaro held you like he was fighting to believe it was real.
“i saw you leaving” you whispered “i thought i had already lost you. i couldn’t stop you…”
“you didn’t have to.”
he pulled back just enough to look into your eyes.
“you said no?”
you nodded, smiling through the tears.
“i said no!”
shotaro blinked slowly, his eyes locked on yours
trying to understand what that really meant.
his chest rose and fell rapidly
as if he were holding back the explosion of feelings those three words had unleashed.
you held his face in both hands, gently.
“i said no because… i can’t lie to myself anymore.”
your voice shook, but you didn’t look away.
“because everything i’ve done these past months was trying to erase you from me, bury you somewhere in my memory, pretend it was possible to move on without you. but it’s not. it wasn’t. it never will be.”
he held his breath for a second.
“i love you, shotaro.”
you smiled, even as the tears streamed down.
“i love you. i always have. and i regret every day i spent away from you… choosing the easy path when all i wanted was to stay and fight with you.”
your voice dropped
“i’m sorry. for everything. but now… i’m here. if you still want me, i’m here.”
shotaro looked at you like he was seeing his heart standing in front of him.
“i never stopped wanting you” he answered
his voice was low, but full of truth
“i tried to hate you, tried to move on… but no part of me could. because my heart was always yours. always. even when you left. even when i thought it was the end.”
he stepped closer, resting his forehead against yours.
“i love you. and i would wait for you again. every day, every year, over and over again. because there’s only you for me.”
and in that moment, between tears and heartbeats, he kissed you.
it wasn’t a hesitant kiss.
it was desperate.
intense.
a kiss full of reunion, of longing, of promise.
his hands held your waist tightly, and yours got lost in his soft hair.
the world disappeared.
there was no church, no guests, no old plans.
there was only the two of you.
and the love that had never stopped existing.
──────────────────────
the sound of the waves gently crashing on the sand mixed with the soft rustling of palm leaves. the island’s warm breeze slipped through the gap in the bungalow curtains, while the two of you shared a wide lounge chair, nestled into each other like pieces of an old puzzle that had finally fallen into place.
the sea in front of you looked like a painting, calm and shimmering under the golden light of late afternoon.
you slowly ran your fingers along shotaro’s arm, drawing invisible circles on his warm skin, feeling your heart beat slowly with that rare kind of peace, the kind that comes when you know, finally, that you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.
“you know” you murmured, your voice drowsy, like you could spend the rest of your life right there “i don’t think i’ve ever been this happy in silence before”
shotaro smiled against the top of your head, where he had just placed a soft kiss
“that’s because we don’t have to run from what we feel anymore. or fill the emptiness with noise”
you looked up at him, your eyes glowing under the golden sunset. he looked back at you, and for a moment, time seemed to slow down.
“y/n” he began, his voice low, heavy with restrained emotion “i spent months imagining what it would be like to see you again. then i spent days trying to believe this was real. but now that you’re here… that i can touch you, hear you breathe next to me” he paused, a small, nervous smile on his lips “now i can only think of one thing”
you raised an eyebrow, curious.
“what?”
he sat up a little, pulling something from the pocket of his shorts. a small white velvet box. your heart skipped a beat.
“a bout how i don’t want to spend another second of my life without you” he turned fully toward you, kneeling on his part of the lounge chair, his eyes locked on yours “we’ve already lost too much time. we’ve already hurt too much. now i just want to do everything right. with you. every single day”
he opened the box.
inside, a simple gold ring with a small diamond. delicate. exactly what you’d imagined, if it were from him.
“marry me, y/n?” he whispered, his voice trembling like he was confessing a secret “marry me, and let me spend the rest of my life loving you the way you deserve”
you felt your eyes fill with tears, your heart pounding, and before you could even answer, you were already smiling so hard your cheeks ached.
“yes” you said, your voice thick with emotion “a thousand times yes, a real yes this time”
he smiled, his eyes shining with emotion, and gently slid the ring onto your finger. then he leaned in and kissed you, with relief, with love, with a promise.
right there, in the middle of paradise, with the ocean as witness and your bodies wrapped together in the warmth of the fading sun, you both finally understood
some stories are made to get lost along the way.
but the most beautiful ones always find their way back in the end.
and yours… was only just beginning.

shotaro
shotaro’s presence is like a warm ray of sunshine. he’s been fluttering around the house all morning, determined to make you feel better.
“my poor baby, you look miserable,”
he says softly, his voice laced with sympathy as he tucks the blanket around your shoulders, making sure not a single draft can sneak in. he disappears into the kitchen, and soon you hear the clatter of pots and the faint sound of him humming one of your favorite songs. when he returns, he’s carrying a tray with a steaming bowl of porridge, a glass of water,
and a little dish of sliced fruit.
“i added some honey to the porridge, it’s good for your throat,”
he explains, sitting beside you on the bed. he scoops up a spoonful, blowing on it carefully before bringing it to your lips.
“open wide, love. you’ll be back to dancing with me in no time, i promise.”
his eyes crinkle into a smile as you eat, and he stays there, feeding you slowly, chatting about silly things to keep your spirits up.

pepero day mishaps with riize !
summary ⭑.ᐟ they mistakenly grab a box of condoms instead of your usual pepero snack <3 (as referenced from here) content warning ⭑.ᐟ condom mentions, slightly suggestive, secondhand embarrassment maybe.
a/n; i know it's already the 12th... </3
☆ : embarrassed, please go easy on him
shotaro:
it would be the first time shotaro’s ever celebrated pepero day with someone meaningful, wanting to commemorate it by buying you a box before he came to pick you up. he’d show up at your place, smiling brightly as he hands you the box. shotaro would be excited about today, telling you there were a lot of things he wanted to do with you, like the pepero game or getting to decorate a piece for each other. you wouldn’t know any better though, surprised to see packs of condoms inside the box instead of the familiar foil packet that had pepero in it. you’d pour a few out on your hand, still in denial, making shotaro panic once he realizes. he’d be embarrassed, apologizing over and over again as he snatches the box out of your hands. needless to say, he’d be bummed out the entire day, still bothered by the unintentional blunder he made. putting a smile on shotaro’s face wouldn’t be difficult though, going back outside to buy actual boxes of pepero this time and doing all of the things he wanted to try just to make him feel better.
