Kerry thanks Egyptian people for hard work in transitioning to democracy

In a joint press conference with Egyptian Foreign Minister Shoukry, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry thanked Egyptians for their hard work in building a democratic Egypt. 

"I want to thank the people of Egypt for their hard work in transitioning to a democracy through their election and in making difficult choices with respect to their economy and the future today," Kerry said. 

The remarks were made after a meeting between Kerry, Shoukry, President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and the Arab League Secretary General. The four leaders met to discuss how to pressure Hamas to accept the Egyptian-led cease fire to the Gaza crisis. 

Kerry also thanked the Egyptian people for their support of Sisi in his effort to find a peaceful ending to the conflict in Gaza. 

Kerry said the Egyptians have provided a framework and the forum for Hamas to be able to come to the table and have a serious discussion with other factions of the Palestinians. 

Shoukry said that Kerry's visit came at a very critical time and in the midst of intensified Egyptian efforts to broker the cease-fire agreement. 

"I welcome Mr. Kerry's and the U.S. Administration's efforts to broker a cease-fire agreement based on the Egyptian proposal," Shoukry said. 

Shoukry said the discussions with Kerry have addressed several regional issues of common concern. 

"In this regard we welcome the U.S. condemnation of the terrorist act that took place in Egypt and in which 21 of our border guards were killed," Shoukry said. "It reflects our agreement and common understanding that we should intensify our efforts to fight this phenomena that not just threatens regional peace but also international peace and security."

Kerry in Egypt to Pressure Hamas to Accept Egyptian Cease-Fire Plan

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry met with President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry today to discuss pressing Hamas to accept the Egyptian cease-fire plan and end fighting in the Gaza strip.

The united front between the U.S. and Egypt on implementing the cease-fire plan shows that how their relationship has grown stronger since the election of President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi. 

Arab League Secretary-General Nabil El-Arabi also met with Kerry, Sisi and Shoukry. 

Kerry and Shoukry appeared in a joint-press appearance after the meeting. Neither suggested any major changes to the Egyptians' plan, which calls for the opening of some of Gaza's trade crossings to support an end to the hostilities. 

"We have reached a common vision," Shoukry said about the cease-fire plan. "It has received broad and wide international support."
