To be honest I’m bummed

It’s kind of hard to get into it what with what’s going on in Afghanistan right now.

Biden really screwed some people over and as much as I like pushing this fetish it’s kind of hard to look the other way when people’s lives are on the line.

So I just wanted to pause for one moment to give out my deepest respects for those who are currently suffering right now , who can’t return home right now to their families because of the president’s stupidity. There is no tickle fantasy going on right there So I want to give my respects right now to them.

That’s a little out of place for this Account but I feel I need to make the mention of deep respects.

I am not happy about what happened and I hope it get’s resolved somehow.

Kissing Up and Kicking Down (October 9, 2011)

Early in my career, I worked with a manager who was extremely deferential to me. She always showed me the utmost respect. She tended to accept my opinion and guidance without question. I quickly found this behavior annoying. I wanted her to show some spine and voice her own opinion. But she rarely showed anything but obsequious and submissive assent.

There are worse problems than having an employee who always agrees with you. And soon I became aware of the real problem with this manager. While discussing an issue with one of her colleagues, I made a comment about how agreeable, supportive, and accommodating she was. The colleague responded, “Yeah, because you’re her boss. You don’t know her deal. She kisses up and kicks down.”

The colleague went on to explain that the manager was the type of person who demonstrated excessive deference to her superiors, but was just as often difficult, combative, and condescending with her peers, and especially so with her own employees.

Unfortunately, I had been blind to this problem. I assumed the manager’s behavior toward me reflected the way she interacted with everyone. Over time, I came to know a darker reality, that those who worked with and for her were often subjected to harsh criticism and abuse.

I feel uniquely fortunate to have worked for some inspired and inspiring leaders over my career. One very consistent quality I’ve observed in the best leaders is that they show universal respect for all people, without qualification. Whether they’re interacting with a CEO or entry-level employee, these leaders demonstrate equal compassion for all.

People who reserve their deference and respect for those who are hierarchically above them aren’t in fact demonstrating respect at all. They are merely ingratiating themselves to their superiors—kissing up, as it were. This kind of behavior isn’t inspired by respect. It’s inspired by selfishness and an insecure need for self-preservation and self-promotion.

Truly respectful humans show just as much regard for those lowest on the totem pole, the poorest, and the most disenfranchised as they do for their bosses or the people with big, important titles. If we can show those considered below us at least as much respect, if not far more, as we do those considered above us, then maybe we can be considered authentically respectful and respectable people.
