Went to Ibaraki prefecture to Izumo Shrine (いずもじんじゃ). This is actually one of the biggest Shrines for one of the God's or Kami (かみ) in the Shinto belief. Kami are designated into different areas of life, some examples are natural phenomenons like wind and thunder and natural objects like the sun, mountains, rivers, trees, and rocks and some animals. So this particular Shrine is for the God who created the Earth. The Earth Kami. (Okuninushinomikoto)
Many Japanese people go to Shrines or Temples (depending on their belief) on the first day of the year to greet the Kami's and say a prayer for a Good New Year and people often wear Kimono's as well. This tradition is called Hatsumōde.
