chapter summary: the story begins by introducing the characters: sieun, suho, baku, gotak, and juntae. what seems like a supposedly ordinary high school friendship slowly reveals subtle chemistry between the two main leads. their interactions are playful, natural, and quiet, laying the emotional foundation of the story.
who writes a letter knowing nobody is supposed to know who wrote it?
for nearly two weeks, that question lingered around the school more persistently than any rumor ever had. students came up with theories almost daily, each one more ridiculous than the last. some insisted the writer was a teacher. others swore it had to be a graduating senior. a few even claimed the letters had been appearing for years, only now people were finally paying attention.
everyone had their own explanation.
everyone except yeon sieun.
the library had always been sieun’s favorite place.
normally, it was one of the few places in school where silence was respected. pages turned quietly, keyboards clicked softly, and conversations rarely rose above a whisper.
murmurs became conversations.
before long, the entire room seemed to be buzzing with the same topic.
“did you read the latest one?”
“i heard someone found it in the music room.”
“my cousin thinks it’s a confession.”
“no, it’s definitely one person writing to someone.”
sieun exhaled slowly, his pen clicking in a steady rhythm beneath his fingers while the same grating conversation droned on in the background—letters, rumors, theories.
he had come here to study.
peace and quiet shouldn’t have been this difficult to find.
unfortunately, everyone else had apparently come here to play detective.
a chair scraped against the floor beside him.
sieun didn’t have to look up to know who it was.
only a few people in the entire campus would sit at his table without asking first.
“sieun-ah, we’ve been looking everywhere for you,” juntae said, dropping into the seat across from him.
gotak simply nodded before leaning over the desk.
“you’ve heard about the letters, right?”
he muttered, his voice barely above a whisper.
sieun’s gaze never left the page, his expression unreadable as he remained completely absorbed in the words before him. the rest of the library seemed to fade into the background.
that lasted exactly until gotak reached forward, effortlessly nudged the book aside, and rested his palm against the table with a quiet thump.
“sieun, you study way too much. seriously, you were so immersed i was starting to wonder if you’d forgotten how blinking works.”
sieun let out a quiet sigh, visibly irritated despite the composure he tried to maintain.
juntae and gotak exchanged a glance before turning back to him. for exactly three seconds, neither of them said a word.
then gotak burst into laughter.
it came so suddenly that he nearly doubled over, clutching at his stomach as he laughed without restraint. beside him, juntae tried—he really did—to keep a straight face, but the corners of his lips betrayed him. one chuckle slipped out, then another, until he gave up entirely.
sieun could only stare at the two of them, somewhere between flabbergasted and hopelessly flustered.
“guys, c’mon… keep it down. you’re embarrassing me.”
he sounded more like he was sulking than scolding them, though the cold look he shot their way suggested otherwise.
once the laughter finally died down, gotak, unsurprisingly, couldn’t resist pushing his luck.
before sieun could react, gotak reached over and pinched his cheek between his thumb and forefinger, giving it an exaggerated squish.
“you would’ve been so cute if it weren’t for that death stare,” gotak teased, finally withdrawing his hand just before sieun looked ready to tear it off.
sieun brushed his hand away with a look of utter disdain before asking flatly, “have either of you seen suho?”
for the first time in what felt like forever, gotak fell silent.
he opened his mouth, then closed it again.
which, frankly, was alarming because gotak never ran out of things to say.
juntae adjusted his glasses with a finger, the realization slowly dawning on him.
“now that you mention it… i don’t think i’ve seen him since chemistry.”
sieun let out a quiet sigh.
“chemistry?” he repeated flatly. “that was first period.”
“that’s right!” juntae said, nodding in agreement before his expression turned thoughtful. “which means… where has he been all day?”
before gotak could open his mouth—undoubtedly to offer an unhelpful comment or one of his painfully corny jokes—sieun slung his backpack over one shoulder and headed for the door.
his footsteps were calm and measured.
behind him came the familiar rhythm of gotak’s loud, unrestrained strides, followed by juntae’s quieter, more careful pace.
they hadn’t made it halfway down the hallway before another conversation drifted into earshot.
“…i’m telling you, this one’s different.”
“it sounds… too personal for someone to just carelessly leave behind.”
gotak immediately slowed his pace.
“hold on?” gotak repeated, turning to the other two. “did you hear that?”
“i heard it,” sieun replied without breaking stride.
“…and i’m still walking.”
gotak groaned dramatically before jogging after him.
“how are you not even a little curious?”
“because unlike everyone else in this school, i have assignments due tomorrow morning.”
“you are unbelievably boring.”
“where to first?” gotak asked.
“the gym,” sieun answered without much thought. “if he’s not sleeping, he’s probably picking a fight.”
“that’s… oddly specific.”
the gym echoed with the rhythmic thuds of basketballs striking polished floors and the occasional shrill whistle from the coach. students filled nearly every corner, either running drills or lingering near the bleachers between games.
suho, however, was nowhere to be seen.
someone else noticed them first.
“well, if it isn’t the academic weapon himself.”
baku leaned casually against the wall, a towel draped around his shoulders as he wiped the sweat from his forehead. a grin spread across his face the moment he spotted sieun.
“didn’t expect to see you anywhere near a gym.”
sieun didn’t miss a beat.
“didn’t expect to see you attending class.”
gotak slapped a hand over his mouth.
juntae looked between the two of them.
“nah,” baku laughed, waving him off. “he’s always like this.”
his expression shifted after a moment.
sieun nodded once, “yeah, have you seen him by chance?”
“haven’t seen him since this morning,” baku replied with a shrug. “if i had to guess, he’s probably wandered off somewhere.”
“helpful,” sieun deadpanned.
with nothing else to go on, the three thanked him and continued their search.
their next stop was the rooftop.
the heavy metal door creaked open, greeting them with a cool breeze that carried the distant chatter of students below.
gotak sighed dramatically.
“okay, now i’m starting to get worried.”
“you’re worried because he’s missing,” juntae asked.
“i’m worried because he’s missing during school hours.”
sieun shot gotak a heavily unamused look, his eyes narrowing just enough to let him know exactly how ridiculous he was being.
gotak counted on his fingers.
“normally we’d know where he was skipping.”
“…i hate that your logic actually makes sense.”
for what felt like the first time all afternoon, sieun found himself agreeing.
juntae sighed before wandering farther across the rooftop, stopping just short of the railing to scan the school grounds below. if suho was anywhere outside, surely he’d be easy enough to spot from up here.
gotak and sieun followed after him, leaning slightly over the railing.
when sieun felt a sudden tug at the back of his blazer, he glanced over his shoulder.
gotak had somehow managed to plant one foot firmly on the ground while balancing the other on a nearby stool, one hand gripping the railing and the other absentmindedly clutching the hem of sieun’s blazer as though it were an approved safety measure.
“preventing myself from falling.”
“by dragging me with you?”
surprisingly, sieun didn’t argue.
if anything, he looked almost resigned to the fact that this was simply how gotak functioned.
before either of them could continue—
juntae suddenly pointed toward the school garden below, his eyes widening.
all three leaned over the railing.
beneath the trees stood a student wearing the same iconic red and black jacket, the same slightly messy hair, and the same hands shoved carelessly into his pockets.
“without a doubt, that’s him,” gotak said confidently.
“oh, definitely,” juntae agreed.
even sieun, after a brief pause, gave a small nod.
without another word, the three hurried back through the rooftop door, nearly tripping over one another in their rush to get downstairs.
the three of them maneuvered through the sea of students until they finally caught up to the figure standing beneath one of the trees.
before the poor student had any chance to react, gotak had already thrown an arm around his shoulders with the confidence of someone greeting a lifelong friend.
“you’ve got everyone looking for you, you kno—”
the student slowly turned around.
the smile on gotak’s face froze.
juntae blinked slowly in disbelief.
sieun was the first one to speak, though it came out sounding more like a cough than actual words.
the student looked between the three of them, thoroughly confused.
gotak immediately let go, taking two hurried steps backward as though physical distance alone could erase what had just happened.
“in my defense,” he began, pointing accusingly at the back of the stranger’s head, “you have the exact same haircut.”
the student instinctively reached up to touch his own hair.
“exactly!” gotak exclaimed.
“that’s not helping your case.”
juntae coughed awkwardly into his fist before offering the student a sheepish bow.
“it’s alright,” the student replied with a nervous laugh. “though i have to admit… for a second, i really thought i’d forgotten one of my friends.”
gotak laughed a little too loudly.
another painfully long silence followed.
without another word, sieun turned on his heel and walked away.
“wait!” gotak called after him. “don’t leave us here!”
“you’re the one who hugged a complete stranger.”
“because i trusted juntae!”
juntae looked up in disbelief.
“because you pointed first!”
“i said he looked like suho!”
their argument continued all the way across the courtyard, drawing more than a few amused glances from passing students.
for the first time that afternoon, even sieun found the corner of his lips threatening to betray him.
he suppressed it almost immediately.
after profusely apologizing to the poor student for mistaking him as someone else, the three quietly retreated with what little dignity they had left.
“…that never happened,” gotak muttered.
“it happened,” sieun replied dryly.
“i’m choosing to forget it.”
“unfortunately for you,” juntae adjusted his glasses with a small, victorious smile, “i have an excellent memory.”
the search continued nonetheless.
they checked every place suho had ever been known to disappear to.
the basketball courts. the empty classrooms. even the convenience store just outside the school gates.
by the time they found themselves wandering back toward the courtyard, even gotak had fallen unusually quiet.
“…maybe we should just give up,” he sighed dramatically, dragging his feet across the pavement. “if ahn suho wants to disappear, let him!” he threw his hands up in mock despair before his voice dropped back to his usual tone, “i’m convinced he possesses supernatural abilities, anyway.”
even sieun had begun to wonder if looking for him was worth the effort.
they had barely taken another step when juntae suddenly stopped walking.
neither of them answered.
“juntae, unless you’ve suddenly developed x-ray vision—”
he pointed toward the old oak tree standing at the far edge of the courtyard.
beneath the shade, someone lay stretched out against the trunk with one arm lazily draped over his eyes. his jacket had long since been abandoned beside him, the cord of his earphones looping down from where they rested loosely around his neck, and the gentle rise and fall of his shoulders made it painfully obvious—
he had been asleep the entire time.
the three stood there in complete silence.
gotak let out a humorless snort.
“…you have got to be kidding me.”
sieun stared at the sleeping figure for a long moment, tapping his foot against the pavement, completely unbothered.
“…we searched the entire school.”
juntae let out a helpless laugh.
“…and here he was, taking a nap.”
gotak gestured wildly toward suho, his arms flailing with exaggeration, “peacefully, at that!”
as if sensing the weight of three increasingly unimpressed stares, suho shifted slightly against the tree before lazily lifting an eyelid.
his gaze landed on the three of them.
“took you guys long enough to find me.”
gotak was the first to break the silence.
“yah! ahn suho! have you lost your mind?!” he yelled on the other side of the courtyard.
the shout echoed across the courtyard.
students passing by instinctively turned their heads—suho didn’t.
he merely shifted beneath the shade of the tree, one hand lazily reaching up to pull an earbud from his ear.
gotak stopped dead in his tracks.
“don’t ‘huh?’ me!” he exclaimed, throwing both hands into the air. “we’ve been looking for you all afternoon!”
suho raised a brow, “…why?”
that single question nearly sent gotak into cardiac arrest.
“why?!” he repeated incredulously. “because you vanished without telling us where you were, dumbass!”
suho tilted his head slightly.
“where else would i take one?”
gotak let out a couple of empty clicks before giving up entirely.
he jabbed a finger accusingly toward suho.
“i don’t even have a comeback for that.”
gotak stared at him in quiet disbelief, looking equal parts flabbergasted and playfully offended.
“did he just make a joke?”
“i think he did,” juntae replied, equally stunned.
“someone write this down.”
throughout the entire exchange, sieun remained where he was, arms at his sides as he calmly watched the scene unfold in front of him.
if anything, this was exactly what he’d expected.
only ahn suho could disappear for hours, force three people to search half the school for him, then act confused when they actually found him.
“still wasn’t feeling it.”
“you were already asleep.”
for reasons even he couldn’t explain, the corner of sieun’s mouth lifted ever so slightly.
small enough that most people would’ve missed it.
gotak folded his arms across his chest, visibly offended. “i swear to god, ahn suho, one of these days you’re going to give someone a heart attack.”
suho tilted his head ever so slightly, the corner of his lips threatening to curl upward. “i don’t think you’re old enough for that.”
for a brief moment, no one said anything. then—just when the silence was getting unbearable—juntae snorted, leaving suho looking undeniably triumphant and utterly smug.
without another word, suho reached beside him, plucked a fallen leaf from the grass and, with a lazy flick of his fingers, sent it drifting straight toward gotak. it landed harmlessly against his forehead before sliding onto the ground.
gotak stared at the leaf before slowly lifting his gaze back to suho, his brows knitting together in genuine disbelief. “did you just throw that leaf at me?”
“self-defense?” gotak repeated, placing a hand over his chest as if personally wounded. “i haven’t even done anything yet.”
“that sounded like a threat.”
the faintest huff escaped juntae, somewhere between a chuckle and a sigh. even sieun, who had spent most of the afternoon looking thoroughly unimpressed, felt the corners of his mouth twitch before he quickly schooled his expression back into its usual indifference.
just as his luck would have it, suho caught it right in time.
his eyes lingered on sieun for the briefest second before looking away again, almost as though he’d imagined it.
gotak, blissfully unaware of the silent exchange, let out an exaggerated groan. “i’m surrounded by horrible people.”
“yet you’re still here,” sieun replied flatly, adjusting the strap of his backpack.
“because somebody has to keep this friend group alive!”
“you’re the one killing it.”
gotak scoffed, placing both hands on his hips as he slowly looked around the courtyard as though he was the only sane person left witnessing suho’s audacity. “juntae,” he said, pointing accusingly at sieun. “did you hear that?”
juntae nodded with surprising seriousness. “i did.”
“and?” gotak waited expectantly, only for juntae to offer him a small, apologetic smile.
“are you not gonna defend me?!”
“he kind of has a point.”
gotak clutched his chest as though he’d just been betrayed by his own family. “wow.”
“you’ll live,” suho replied without a trace of sympathy.
suho pretended to consider it, his expression remaining perfectly straight. “gosh… i really hope so.”
gotak stared at him in utter disbelief before shaking his head. “you’re unbelievable.”
before anyone could get another word in, a loud gasp echoed from somewhere across the courtyard, followed almost immediately by a voice loud enough for nearly half the entire campus to hear.
“they found another letter!”
for half a heartbeat, nobody moved.
the laughter that had filled the courtyard only moments ago seemed to dissolve into the afternoon air as students instinctively turned toward the voice. conversations trailed off mid-sentence, heads lifted in unison, and an almost tangible silence settled over the campus before, as though someone had flipped an invisible switch, the entire courtyard erupted into motion.
chairs scraped against the pavement, backpacks were hastily slung over shoulders, and within seconds, dozens of students were already pushing through the crowd toward the main building, each one eager to catch a glimpse of the newest letter.
“another one?” gotak asked, his eyes practically sparkling with excitement as he watched the growing crowd. “this is, what… the sixth one?”
“seventh,” juntae corrected absentmindedly, his gaze never leaving the sea of students rushing past them.
“wait, seriously?” gotak asked, his brows lifting in surprise as an amused grin spread across his face.
juntae nodded matter-of-factly. “i’ve been keeping count.”
“of course you have,” gotak muttered with a fond shake of his head. he reached over to ruffle juntae’s neatly combed hair, earning himself an exasperated sigh as juntae immediately tried smoothing it back into place.
turning toward sieun and suho, gotak spread his hands expectantly. “well?”
sieun sighed, already knowing exactly where this was headed. “don’t.”
“don’t what?” gotak asked, tilting his head with an expression of exaggerated innocence that fooled absolutely no one.
“…i was going to ask,” gotak admitted shamelessly, the corners of his lips curling into a grin.
before sieun could object any further, gotak grabbed juntae by the sleeve and practically dragged him into the growing crowd. “come on!”
“gotak, slow down!” juntae laughed, stumbling after him as he struggled to keep pace.
“if we don’t hurry, we’re gonna be stuck in the back!”
within moments, the two had disappeared into the sea of uniforms, leaving only sieun and suho beneath the shade of the old tree.
for a brief moment, neither of them spoke. suho slipped both hands into his pockets, quietly watching the crowd disappear toward the main building before glancing sideways at sieun. “you going?” he asked, his voice as nonchalant as ever.
sieun followed his gaze toward the commotion before adjusting the strap of his backpack. “not particularly.”
“but?” suho prompted, the faintest hint of curiosity flickering across his expression.
“…if i don’t,” sieun replied after a beat, letting out a quiet sigh, “gotak’s going to spend the rest of the day telling me what it says.”
the corner of suho’s lips lifted into a small, knowing smile. “you’ve got a point there.”
without another word, the two fell into step beside one another, walking at an unhurried pace toward the crowd while the now-empty shade of the old tree quietly disappeared behind them.
the closer they drew to the main building, the more the crowd seemed to swell with each passing second. students poured into the hallway from every direction, some standing on the benches lining the courtyard while others shamelessly leaned over shoulders, all hoping to catch a glimpse of the newest letter before someone inevitably took it down.
“there’s no way we’re getting through that,” juntae muttered to himself, craning his neck in a futile attempt to see over the crowd of excited students.
“you underestimate me,” gotak added a second later, a grin spreading across his face as though he’d just accepted a personal challenge.
before either sieun or juntae could stop him, gotak slipped into the crowd with surprising confidence, weaving effortlessly between students while muttering the occasional, “’scuse me,” and “coming through,” despite not slowing down in the slightest.
juntae let out a helpless sigh before hurrying after him. “gotak, wait!” he called, bowing apologetically to every student his friend had accidentally bumped into. “i’m so sorry… excuse us… really, i’m so sorry.”
“they’re not coming back anytime soon,” suho observed, slipping both hands into his pockets as he watched the two disappear into the crowd.
sieun followed them with his eyes before quietly nodding. “…probably not.”
the two settled near the edge of the hallway, neither particularly interested in squeezing through dozens of curious students. from where they stood, all they could make out were the occasional flashes of phone screens held high above the crowd and the constant murmur of voices blending into one another.
“what do you think it says?” suho asked after a moment, his gaze remaining fixed on the bulletin board they couldn’t even see.
sieun shrugged lightly. “judging by everyone’s reaction… mostly likely another depressing one.”
sieun glanced sideways at him. “that doesn’t sound like nothing.”
suho’s shoulders lifted in a lazy shrug. “just wondering.”
“why people care this much.”
sieun looked back toward the crowd. somewhere in the middle, gotak’s voice rose above everyone else’s.
“you’re literally taller than me!”
despite himself, the corner of sieun’s mouth twitched.
“there they are,” he murmured.
as though on cue, gotak suddenly emerged from the crowd looking thoroughly offended, his uniform slightly disheveled and his hair sticking up in directions it definitely hadn’t been pointing earlier. “i almost died,” he announced dramatically, dusting off his sleeves as juntae stumbled out behind him, breathing noticeably harder than before.
“you exaggerate,” juntae replied between breaths, carefully straightening his glasses.
“really now?” gotak asked, placing a hand over his chest. “someone elbowed me right in the ribs.”
“that was because you pushed through the middle.”
juntae shook his head before unfolding a neatly folded sheet of paper he’d been holding against his chest the entire time. “i copied it down,” he explained, smoothing out the creases with surprising care. “everyone kept talking over each other, so… i figured this would be easier.”
almost instinctively, the four of them leaned closer.
juntae carefully unfolded the sheet of paper, taking a moment to smooth out the creases his hurried handwriting had left behind. “i couldn’t copy everything perfectly,” he admitted, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly. “people kept bumping into me.”
“just read it already,” gotak urged, bouncing lightly on the balls of his feet. “you’re killing me here.”
juntae shot him an unimpressed look before lowering his gaze to the page. for a brief moment, even the noise of the crowd around them seemed to fade into the background.
his voice softened just enough that the others instinctively leaned in.
“don’t let chance decide whether you’ll act or not.”
a brief silence settled over the four of them.
“sometimes, what feels like the absence of a chance is really an opportunity in disguise.”
gotak frowned, already trying to piece the words together.
juntae lowered his gaze to the final line.
for reasons he couldn’t explain, this one felt heavier than the others.
“i only wish i’d been brave enough to realize it sooner.”
when the last word left his lips, nobody spoke.
the bustling hallway carried on around them as though nothing had happened. students continued debating theories, teachers attempted—unsuccessfully—to clear the crowd, and somewhere nearby, someone insisted the letters had to be part of an elaborate school event.
yet within their small circle, an unfamiliar silence lingered.
“i will admit, that’s…” gotak scratched the back of his head before letting out a slow breath. “…kind of sad, actually.”
“a little,” suho admitted quietly, his gaze lingering on the paper a moment longer than usual.
juntae folded the sheet with careful hands before looking toward sieun. “…what do you think?”
sieun didn’t answer right away.
his eyes remained fixed on the last line.
i only wish i’d been brave enough to realize it sooner.
for reasons he couldn’t explain, the words settled somewhere deep inside him, tugging at something he couldn’t quite wrap his head around.
gotak tilted his head. “you’ve been staring at the paper for like… a solid minute.”
sieun looked away first, slipping both hands into his pockets as though that somehow made the feeling easier to ignore.
