Know Thyself
16 PERSONALITIES (MBTI)
On the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) test, I got the ISFJ-A or Defender type of personality. The Defender personality type is seen as a person who is reliable, dedicated, practical, etc. which is exactly how I am. I agree with the results of the MBTI test because it is a clear reflection of how I perceive myself. The given scales by the MBTI test namely Mind (Extraverted vs. Introverted), Energy (Intuitive vs. Observant), Nature (Thinking vs. Feeling), Tactics (Judging vs. Prospecting), and Identity (Assertive vs. Turbulent) and the results of each are accurate figures based on how I think I am.
The recommended careers for ISFJ-A are ones that relate to becoming sensible helpers such as the careers: social worker, bookkeeper, medical secretary, executive assistant, dentist, elementary school teacher, librarian, franchise owner, customer service representative. Almost none of these recommended careers appealed to me simply because none of them are in line with my interests. If I were to choose one one of the recommended careers, I would choose franchise owner because it appeals to me. Anything under business-related jobs appeal to me because that is what I am most knowledgeable and comfortable in.
With the knowledge of my personality type, I will be able to know my strengths which I will be able to use to my advantage in handling technical or critical problems. Knowing my strength would allow me to realize what I aspect I am most effective in. This way, I will be able to produce work with high quality in the most efficient and effective way as possible. On the other hand, I will also know my weaknesses. Knowing my weaknesses is also an advantage because I will be able to know the specific aspects or traits I need to work on. Working on converting my weaknesses into strengths or opportunities will help me become a better person and hopefully succeed in my endeavors. In conclusion, this will help me become a successful global business leader as it will affect the way I will handle the company I will work for from the technical to the human skills.
BIG 5 PERSONALITY TEST
On the Big 5 Personality Test, the score percentile I got for Extroversion is 16 which is low. On the MBTI Test, the percentage ratio of my Extroversion and Introversion is 33:67. Based on the two (2) tests, both analyzed me to be an introverted person rather than being an extroverted person which I definitely agree on. The results are in line with my actions which are typically what an introverted person would do. In general, I like to keep to myself and I have difficulty with being around strangers.
Based on each trait, I would describe myself as the following:
Extroversion
The score percentile I received for Extroversion is 16 which is ranked as low. This score can be interpreted that I am a person that keeps to herself. I am not an outgoing person and I am more comfortable if I work by myself, not with other people. This means that I am an introverted person.
Emotional Stability
The score percentile I received for Emotional Stability is 81 which is ranked as high. This personality pertains to a person’s ability to remain stable and balanced. Since I received a high score, this means that I react less emotionally and I am generally calm in nature. My emotions are always stable, calm, and I do not repress any negative feelings towards anything or anyone.
Agreeableness
The score percentile I received for Agreeableness is 67 which is ranked as high. This means that am a friendly towards my peers or the people I encounter, this also shows that I get along well with other people. I am also an optimistic person who sees the positive side of events as much as possible.
Conscientiousness
The score percentile I received for Conscientiousness is 97 which is ranked as high. This is the highest personality trait I ranked in which means that I have a high level of self-discipline. I like everything to be planned out in detail before acting upon it, which also means that anything spontaneous is something I dread. I am careful and diligent will all my tasks and I make sure that everything I do is done properly.
Intellect/Imagination
The score percentile I received for Intellect/Imagination is 14 which is ranked as low. This is the lowest personality trait I ranked in which means that I am a close-minded person. It will be hard to persuade me into trying something new or foreign to me because I am already used to the routine I set for myself.
The results of the MBTI and Big 5 Personality Traits test are consistent. Based on the MBTI, I am seen as a person who is introverted, reliable, dedicated, and practical which are also seen in the results of my Big 5 Personality Traits results. Based on the Big 5 Personality Traits results, I am introverted, calm, detail-oriented, careful, and diligent. No discrepancies have been seen in my results of both personality tests.
The Big 5 Personality Traits test gave me additional insight in addition to those of what I discovered in my MBTI results. If the MBTI gave me an idea of what type of person I am, whereas the Big 5 Personality Traits test made me realize more about the specifics regarding my different personalities, such as being more close-minded, self disciplined, etc. as stated above. In addition, the personality levels of the Big 5 Personality Traits test is easier to analyze or understand compared to the MBTI.
RIASEC PROFILE
The top three (3) characteristics I scored high in are Social, Conventional, and Enterprising. Social being the lowest, and Enterprising being the highest. This means that I like working with other people to some extent rather than operating machines or objects. I also like following a set of rules, procedures, or routines I set for myself. I also work best with information and details rather than working with abstract ideas. In addition, I am also inclined to doing business projects and taking action as soon as possible to not waste time. These results are consistent with what I visualize myself to be.
The top three (3) jobs fitting for me based on the results of the O*Net profiler are Accountant, Advertising & Promotions Manager, and Advertising Sales Agents. These jobs interest me because they are under the field of business, which is related to the course I am currently taking up. Based on my judgement, I am most fitting for the job of Advertising & Promotions Manager because I already have the basic knowledge or fundamentals needed for this position. I am currently taking up BS Marketing Management which means that this job is best suited for me.
Yes, I will have a fulfilling career if I take one of the suggested jobs on my profile. Specifically those that interest me only. If I choose one of the jobs within my expertise, then I will most likely succeed in it. Being interested in my choice of work means that I will have the personal driving force to be motivated to work everyday. This would mean that I am satisfied with the career I am pursuing and that I would strive to succeed until I eventually reach my goal and become content and comfortable with the lifestyle I have.
My level of introversion is in line with my RIASEC profile because the top two (2) characteristics namely Enterprising and Conventional are ones that I see myself as. Even though I am introverted, I take pride in persuading and leading people especially if the task to be done is within my forte. This goes to show that even if I score low as an extroverted person, a part of me still has a few traits that an extroverted person has but is simply overpowered by the characteristics an introverted person possesses.
SELFSTIR 360 ASSESSMENT
Upon answering the Work and Friend type of surveys, I realized how big of an impact I am able to make towards my co-workers and friends. Upon generating my results for both surveys, I was surprised to see that I scored higher than 3 in all the attributes I selected. Generally, the people who rated me for both surveys gave me a rating higher than what I gave myself. This shows how low I think of myself, while my raters see the potential I fail to see.
For the Work survey, my greatest strengths are Accountability-Responsibility and Engagement rated at an average of 3.7 out of 4. On the other hand, my greatest weaknesses are Communication and Achievement rated at an average of 3.6 out of 4. These traits did not surprise me because I am already aware of these. I have always seen as someone who is responsible for her work and takes full accountability for it especially if I committed an error. I also am always engaged with the work given to me, meaning I always contribute to the work and do what is asked of me. Furthermore, I am also aware that I am lacking in communicating with my peers properly as it is difficult for me to work with people, especially if we do not have the same work ethic. I sometimes also become demotivated to do my work especially if I am physically unfit to do so.
For the Friend survey, my greatest strength is Consultative Decision Making at an average rate of 3.7 out of 4. On the other hand, my greatest weakness is Authenticity with an average rate of 3.3 out of 4. These traits do not surprise because such as the results from the Work survey, I already am aware of these. I agree that I openly ask for consultation to trusted peers mainly because I want to make sure that what I am doing is correct. An example of this is myself actively asking my professor questions during consultations regarding a project. As for Authenticity, I am aware that I sometimes fall back in this factor because there are times wherein I fail to do what I have promised my peers I will do. However, I completely own up to my faults and find a way to make it up to the person I have wronged.
Generally, the six (6) people who I asked to rate me mostly gave a rating that is higher than my own rating for the respective characteristic. I am surprised to learn about this because I was not aware that I was able to give a strong impression to them. Based on their rating, I realized how different my external image I show is different from how I see myself. I think too low of myself when in reality I actually have the capability to excel in the factors rated in the survey.
Conducting a 360 assessment in the workplace is important because employees are given feedback by their co-employees and not only from their supervisors, therefore more insights can be gained. Because of this, the results will be more balanced when it comes to their skills and behaviors which is more fair and accurate for the employees. The purpose of the assessment is for the employee to gain self-awareness by knowing more about their strengths and areas they need to improve in. They are also more aware of how their peers and other people in the organization perceive them, including their behaviors they never noticed.
The 360 assessment helps in producing effective leaders. The assessment is answered by various sources such as supervisors, co-workers, peers, etc. which makes the results more complex as it is more well-rounded from the different perspectives of the people assessing the person. These people are also given the chance to help the leader understand more about their personal strengths and weaknesses. This is beneficial to the leader because there may be some traits that they are unaware of. Furthermore, given the broad feedback from the assessment, leaders can use this information to further develop their skills and behaviors. This can be achieved by seeking training from other workshops or undergoing various development programs to grow more as a leader.
Third Blog Entry: Know Thyself
Part I Do you agree or disagree with your test results? Why?
- The test identified me as an ISFJ-A, an Introvert, Sensor, Feeler, Judger, and Assertive. Personally, I identify myself as an ambivert or being both an introvert and extrovert, depending on what the situation calls for. Aside from that, I do think I’m a Sensor because I find myself to be practical in trying to find solutions to most situations. I do somehow agree that I am also a Feeler, however, I think I have a good balance between feeling and thinking because there is an importance to being rational and not letting your feelings get the best out of you. I also really agree that I am a Judger since Judgers are identified as organized and well-planned. Lastly, I was surprised that I was Assertive because I thought of myself as more calm and less agitated, however, I was able to relate to the test’s definition of Assertive - someone who is self-assured, resistant to stress, and unlikely to dwindle on the past.
Do the recommended careers (based on the infographics) appeal to you? Why/why not?
- The ISTJ’s line of work is described as the productive realist. My result is recommended to undergo jobs such as accountants, office managers, probation officers, and logisticians. What I think is common among the jobs is that they require the occupant to be organized and familiar with a certain system. Although these are good recommendations, I find that they are too predictable and stagnant. Although I like to be organized, I’d want to go after jobs that require me to be responsive to different situations and not just a to a certain set of cycled responsibilities.
How will the knowledge of your personality type help you to become a successful business leader?
- Personality tests like this allow me to assess my strengths. Being an ISTJ-A made me realize that I am quite reliable and organized. These can be my strengths in contributing to achieving business goals once I become a business leader. Part II
How does your introversion/extroversion level compare across these 2 tests? Do you agree with the results? Why/why not?
- This test identified me as an extrovert (70 percentile score) which goes against the primary test. I didn’t find this weird because like I said, I identify as an ambivert so there are really instances wherein I exhibit extroversion.
Based on the definition of each trait, how would you describe yourself?
- I describe myself as collected, quite reserved, and organized. I like to tailor-fit my response to most things instead of having a blanket response to situations. I don’t like complicated things which is why I like to break down tasks or situations to fully grasp the context and be able to prepare well. The results of the test were a confirmation of my description because it gave me high percentile scores for conscientiousness and agreeableness. I also agree that I have a high emotional stability because I don’t like to act on a whim. I usually like to stay quiet and collect my thought and respond in a way that is acceptable, yet efficient.
In your view, are the results of your MBTI and Big 5 tests consistent? Why/why not?
- Apart from the ambiguity between extroversion/introversion, I generally agree with the results of the two personality tests because, like I said, I’m very collected and organized and these two traits manifest into my work ethics and personality overall. I identified with the descriptions for sensor and judger the most from the MBTI test while I also am able to identify emotional stability, agreeableness, and conscientiousness in me as well.
Does this test give you additional insights into your personality traits, in addition to those you discovered in your MBTI results? Why/why not?
- It did not necessarily add, however, it did confirm what the MBTI results gave. I think my MBTI and the IPIP Big Five Factor Market results complement one another well and best describe my personality.
Part III
Is the definition of each characteristic in the R-I-A-S-E-C profile consistent with what you know about yourself? Why or why not?
- Similar to the two tests, I was able to identify myself well in my definition of RIASEC. I always had a strong sense of realism but I also had avenues to be creative while growing up which is why probably the reason why I had a higher percentile in the Artistic category too. Investigative and Enterprising were my second highest percentiles. I do find myself relating to Investigative because I’m very observant and keen in trying to come up with solutions. I also agree that I enjoy working with people towards a goal which was probably the reason I scored high in Enterprising.
Do any of the suggested jobs fitting your R-I-A-S-E-C profile interest you? Why or why not?
- I viewed jobs that required minimal to no preparations and jobs that required medium preparations, however, job recommendations for both sections were too labor intensive and do not really go in line with the type of work I aim to get post college.
Which of the suggested jobs do you think you are capable of doing, based on the level of preparation prescribed in the O*Net profiler?
- The medium preparation jobs described the line of work they recommend to me as industries with communication and organizational skills to supervise, manage, or train. These fit the descriptions of the jobs I want to attain in the future.
Do you think you will have a fulfilling career if you take one of the suggested jobs for your profile? Why or why not?
- I honestly do not think I fit on any of the recommended jobs primarily because they are too labor intensive. While there is nothing wrong with it, I just have always envisioned myself to be in an office more than laboratories, cafes, and farming lands.
Do you agree with the comparison between your level of introversion/extroversion to your R-I-A-S-E-C profile? Why or why not?
- My RIASEC results showed that I am more of an extrovert than an introvert as suggested by my MBTI result. This isn’t as surprising because like I mentioned, I find myself to be an ambivert more than anything. Part IV What did you learn about yourself by doing the SelfStir assessment?
- My raters gave me the highest scores in Future Outlook, Communication, and Learning Orientation. I was very surprised that they see these areas as my strongest points because even though I have always mentioned that I a) had detailed plans of what I want to do post-college, b) want to pursue a communications-related career, and c) want to be adaptable to every situation I face, I wasn’t aware that these mindsets reflected on my actions as a friend, co-worker, or group mate.
What is your greatest strength and your greatest weakness? Did these traits surprise you? Or are you already aware of them?
- I scored highest in Future Outlook. This didn’t really take me by surprise because I have always thought I was very future-oriented and would always consider how my present actions can benefit or manifest into something for my future. I scored lowest in Personal Integrity - Inspiring Trust. It was surprising that my raters gave me such scores in this area because I thought of myself as honest and that my honesty reflected in how I work with them. Even though I didn’t expect a response like this, I think it’s a challenge for me to be more transparent in my doings for them to see my adherence to principals I uphold.
What do you think about other people’s rating of you? Are you surprised to learn about their impression of you? Or are you already aware of the image you project to the world?
- I was very surprised with the results because I don’t really have my workmates or friends to assess who I am as a person and how I work as a group mate. It was very interesting to see how I am through the perspective of others. It allowed to me see areas they think I excel in as well as let me know of my vulnerabilities in which I can improve on.
How important is a 360 assessment in the workplace?
- I think this self-assessment programs such as this is important in environments that make people work together for them to a) be more self-aware of who they are, b) allow themselves to take pride in areas that they are good at, and c) be aware of their weaknesses to be able to improve themselves.
How can this assessment help you become an effective leader?
- This helped me highlight points that I am good at and by knowing these, I can lead people using my strengths and sharing one vision. One of my highest scores in Learning Orientation, and I define this concept as being adaptable to situations that can give me something to learn from. I can use this strength to remind my peers that everything we find ourselves situated in, we can learn something from it, and that it is just a matter of perspective. I think this realization is something I will carry with me until I take on a bigger role as a business leader because I really think it’s important to never stop learning once you’re in the real world. This test made me want to be a leader that encourages a working environment that welcomes learning more than it does profit. Personally, I think self-assessment quizzes are important to highlight one’s strengths and weaknesses. It makes them aware of what they’re good at so that they can maintain it and makes them aware of their weaknesses in order to improve them.
Second Blog Entry: Generation Z
5 Key Issues Gen Z face at school and work
1. The Baby Boomers, the generation preceding the generation Z, developed and established work practices that are treated as standards of a good employee. This means clocking in an eight-hour workday, working hard to attain higher positions within the same company, and single-handedly investing their efforts for long-term goals. Their work ethics are decided to be the standard of what makes a good employee, therefore when younger professionals fail to attain the same working habits, they are considered incompetent, unmatched, and even lazy.
2. I notice that people of my age group are hardworking, however they highly prioritize work that is aligned with their own personal goals first before the goals of the company. I think that this mentality manifests a certain kind of satisfaction for younger employees that are able to prioritize their goals, however, it is quite uncommon for organizations to have a culture that promotes this mentality and because of this, generation Z employees are deemed selective and almost always unsatisfied.
3. In addition to my second point, generation Z is labeled as the generation that can never stay in one workplace/company. I think the issue here is the imbalance between wanting to fulfill one’s personal goals and wanting to contribute to the company’s bottomline. I think generation Z workers are finding it difficult be in a job that promotes both personal and professional fulfillment.
4. Generation Z students are quite dependent on technology due to being born in an era that was in the process of revamping and digitalizing. With this, baby boomers, the ones who are usually in-charge of educating the younger generation, are expected to keep up with the new channels generation Z have immersed themselves in, however, many baby boomers stick to the traditional way of teaching because this is what they deem as effective.
5. Lastly, I think this generation was forced to become more independent because of the presence of the internet. They are expected to become well-rounded in many topics at once, resulting in information overload and/or inability to absorb new information and retain old knowledge. 5 Key Takeaways
1. “...we grew up during the Great Recession, so we're pragmatic, independent and in survival mode” I really agree with this line from David and Jonah Stillman’s article because it encompassed a certain aspect of the mentality generation Z fresh graduates have when looking for a job. Because we grew up at the time the economy was trying to rebuild itself, we’ve become averse to unnecessary extravagance. This can combat the mentality I raised in number 3 (re: personal and professional fulfillment) because it sort of counterchecks generation Z professionals who want to prioritize their own goals above company goals. It puts them in a position wherein they compromise self-satisfaction in order to keep earning. I personally think being pragmatic is necessarily negative. I think it serves as a reminder for younger professionals to work because this is what they have to do.
2. One articles depicts one of the characters from Modern Family as the perfect representation of a gen Z kid. I was able to relate to how they called her “conscientious, hard-working, somewhat anxious, and mindful of the future” because this really how I would describe my own self. My friends and I often share how we want to make it big right after college at the same time worrying about what impact we can make in the world as we enter adulthood. I think my generation is less self-centric and more holistic in building ourselves, not for our own benefit, for the people around us. These gen Z characteristics can combat the first three issues I raised because it reveals that gen Z workers are actually selfless and are willing to work towards a certain greater good.
3. Generation Z are not risk-averse but they want security. One of the articles mentioned that this generation cares about money, similar to baby boomers. This is in contrast to the second issue I raised wherein older generations misjudge younger employees who want to attain a certain level of work-life balance. This generation is very much aware of how expensive living conditions are, therefore they purposely attain financial security as one of their first priorities.
4. This generation is very progressive. They witnessed the election of the first African-American US President, the passing of same-sex equality laws, and a general acceptance towards things that were once considered outliers. This age group is very accepting and considerate and I personally think this is an advantage against the first issue I raised. They understand the behavior of older generations but they do not necessarily conform to these because they know times are changing and the standards held against them no long deem fit to the current work setting.
5. Generation Z want to change the world because it saw how cruel living conditions are for more than half of the population. This means that this age group holds high standards for big brands that profit from providing necessities to consumers. I think this is one of the reasons why many big corporations invest heavily on corporate social responsibility or CSR because they know the world is watching. Being born with the internet allows the generation Z kid to be aware of what brands do to improve life overall.
The Modern Corporation
SHURMAN Blog Entry #1 (31 May 2019)
The organization and society is now more intertwined than ever. If some time long ago that corporations exist solely for gaining profit, such entities would not exist anymore in current times. Today, solidarity and awareness are key to building a successful organization.
DLSU’s RVR-COB Code of Ethics attest to the new era of business. It lists down the roles of a modern business leader. According to it, a business leader must be compassionate, ethical, loyal, caring, accountable, and honest, among others. It emphasizes that a business leader must not conduct business with any malicious intent, and must work with consideration and respect for those who maybe connected or affected by his/her line of work. As a DLSU business student, I think that it is essential to integrated these values early on. Business involves a lot of money, and it is easy to lose your way in pursuit of one’s own desires. Before, business is also a moral gray area. I recall the time reading about a scientist named Clair Cameron Patterson. He lobbied the ban against leaded gasoline, which was slowly harming the society. It was him against multimillion dollar companies, who were hellbent on proving Patterson wrong. It was a hard journey in proving that leaded gasoline was infecting everyone as those companies tried so hard to cut the funding and to stop Patterson from his research. In the end, Patterson won, and we were all saved from that doom. Now, this may be a far fetched idea in today’s society. Such exploitation would lead to drastic repercussions. But without a code of ethics such what DLSU RVR-COB has, is such immorality impossible? As a future business leader, I would want these values and principles right at the very core of my business. The ideal business leader would be very involved in his/her corporate social responsibility. It is not enough for an organization to just earn profit anymore. An organization must be built on a vision to improve society. It must understand the woes of the people and help to make everyone’s lives easier. It is important to have such an amazing and significant impact to the people around you. The job of a business leader is to lead its organization in the right way. In order to do this, s/he must uphold the organization in its values. In business, there is no singular way to achieve your goals. It is a continuous progress of lifelong learning. Business today deals with the organization and the world around it. A good business leader must be well-rounded. S/He must have a deeper and more inclusive understanding of how the world works. Culture has a bearing on business, from the profile and lifestyle of employees to the organization’s own processes. In order to fulfill the organization’s goals, a good business leader must be able to understand and respect these differences and accept them. In this way, culture becomes a bridge instead of a barrier.
Conducting business in today’s world is no easy feat. A goal cannot be achieved alone, and an organization will not grow if led the wrong way. A business leader now faces more responsibilities and challenges. Profit, albeit necessary, becomes secondary. There is more fulfillment in the modern corporation, knowing that you are in such a suitable position to improve and strengthen society. It is my duty as a student to live up to the new age of business leaders, and it is my challenge to learn in order to contribute more to fellow Filipinos and quite possibly, the world.
First Blog Entry: Ethics
1.) Is it necessary for a business leader to have a code of ethics to adhere to? Why or why not? Personally, I believe a leader must adhere to a code of ethics in order to maintain honorableness and a certain kind of morality in his/her line of work. Following a code of ethics allows the leader to check himself/herself in terms of integrity and the way he/she manages his teammates and other relevant stakeholders. The leader is equipped with reminders on how to be honorable and honest in his/her dealings with the organization and his/her role as a productive member of society. 2.) Does a business leader need to reflect on his/her purpose? Why or why not? It is important for the leader to reflect on his/her purpose to be reminded of his/her intentions and objectives. Knowing one’s purpose allows the leader to have a sense of direction that he/she can use to guide his/her members in achieving organizational and personal goals. 3.) Is it necessary for a business leader to guide the direction his/her organization is taking? Why or why not? I think to a certain extent, leaders must guide his/her members in how to meet organizational goals, however, this is can also be a challenge for the leader to utilize a leadership style that is collaborative and takes into consideration the personal goals of his/her members. While a leader is there to manage tasks that will help the organization reach its goals, he/she also must also take on a role that helps his/her members become the best versions of themselves and not only as employees. I think a leader should always be holistic in the way he/she manages and interacts with his/her members.
4.) Is it important for a business leader to posses integrity in his/her dealings with others? Why or why not? Yes, a leader must always practice integrity in order to produce a culture of honesty and transparency in the workplace. I think leadership is a two-way street, therefore the values a leader possesses ensues the kind of values his/her members have as well. Integrity in a group is important in order to build and maintain an environment wherein truth is given weight as opposed to being deceitful to one another. I think an honesty culture is healthy because it allows members to countercheck one another and give feedback in a way that isn’t hurtful but rather allows them to be more productive as a team.
Knowing Thyself
It is important to know our true selves before entering the workplace. We need to consider our own interest in choosing the degree we take in college and eventually the career who would be spending our time and effort for the rest of our life.
I took three tests in order to see which characteristics are evident on me and could define what is the right job for myself in the future.
The first test which is the MBTI test revealed that I am an advocate which I can agree on. My imagination and curiosity makes me different from others. I used my creativity to think of unusual ways to solve problems. In making decisions of what to choose as an option, I would prefer to take the long curvy road rather than the short straight path because I think that it could offer me more learning than taking up the simple one. I am passionate person that always want to do my best in every action I do. I believe that I should practice honesty all the time in my every motive I take.
The recommended careers from the info-graphics do not fully appeal with my interest because I am a person who wants to try something new and does not only stick under my comfort zone. The jobs presented although offer people to be more in control or exercise power but it lacks flexibility and has the difficulty for me to find the real meaning behind it. One job mentioned is being a social worker. Being a social worker is just okay for me but does not bring 100% satisfaction to me as an employee.
My knowledge of my personality type would help me in becoming one of successful business leaders in the future by guiding me how to filter and use only delectable characteristics in the workplace . It would also teach me which characteristics should I improve on to become a better leader in the future. By knowing more my capabilities I can manage to perform the tasks assigned to me very well to contribute to the organizations objective to achieve its organizational goals
The results of the two test I took somewhat contradicts each other. The first test implied that I am more of an introvert than an extrovert while the second test showed that I possess a high percentage of extroversion. I agree more on the first test rather than the second because I consider myself more as a more reserve person and will find time to adjust with a certain group. My extroversion comes in I think when I’m with my close friends and people that I share with the same interest.
The Big Five Personality Test results
Extroversion- I tend to initiate conversations with my close friends. I would love to appear approachable more to people for me to start building relationships that is essential to achieve better communication with my co-workers in the future.
Emotional Stability- I scored almost half of the percentage in the test. Something I need to work on in my opinion is to avoid listening to negative comments of people about my actions. I need to listen rather with what myself is telling me to do, to satisfy my interest by learning things that I really want.
Intellect/Imagination- I scored low on the other hand for Intellectual may be because I am afraid sometimes to take risk , to invest in learning something which I think is not under the area of my expertise.
All in all I consider myself as an ambivert person. I appear some time as introvert and extrovert in certain situations. This is something I need to work on as I enter the workplace, I need to be able to easily adapt to a company’s culture in order to build good relationship with them as we work towards the same goal for the organization
The results of my MBTI and the Big 5 tests are not consistent. MBTI test measures more deeper characteristics of me as a person while the Big 5 tests only identified the general ones. One reason why it became inconsistent would be because The Big 5 tests only give views of the top characteristics needed in the workplace and not like MBTI test which measures each good or bad characteristics of me as an individual both in home and in work.
The test does gave additional insights on my personality traits. It revealed that I have some extroverted characteristics on me and that I am careful when it comes in creating decisions.
The definition of my profile is consistent with what I know about myself. I am the person who loves the art of music. I have a talent in signing which I can share to people to inspire them and can also share to myself in times where I need something that would make me smile during difficult situations. I also agree that I am investigative/curious when I would not feel okay until I see a possible solution to a problem.
I expected that I would score low on the realistic component since I do not enjoy that much doing activities that require a lot of physical effort. I disagree on the other hand with me being low in the social component. Yes I might be an introvert but does not mean I do not want to interact at work. What I only do not like is the idea of being a teacher in school and it does not include restricting myself in interacting with a group of individuals to achieve the same goals.
And lastly as a business major the Enterprising component showed how business minded I am. It showed my interest in management and investment
It is correlated with the Conventional competent where it revealed my true possession of leadership skills. I want to take in charge in every tasks assigned to me and would be willing to put all my effort to teach and guide others
The third test that I took is the R-I-A-S-E-C tests .Jobs from the R-I-A-S-E-C profile that interest me are astronomers, cost estimators. I was fascinated with geography and astrology since I was a child and I also love to assume probabilities and forecast what could happen in certain situations.
Jobs that I am capable of doing could be database administrators and cost estimators from the Job Zone Four: High preparation needed.
I think everyone of us can achieve a fulfilling career as long as we pick the job that we have interest in and we will not be influenced by other people’s opinion/want.
I agree with the comparison between my level of introversion and extroversion. It showed that I scored less in social aspect profile and that serving people through teaching or giving advice is not under the area of expertise/ not my strength as an individual.
The last test that I took which is the Self-Stir Assessment made me realize that both self and other people’s assessment can help a person identify things he/she can improve on. An individual’s drive to improve is considered as the main ingredient to be an excellent employee. Our co-workers, friends, and managers may be there to give words of encouragement, suggestions and instructions, but the final say to execute the action is in our hands.
My greatest strength could be the ability to initiate my teammates to do their part in a groupwork. I always have that practice to ask my teammates of their own strengths and weaknesses to identify which tasks could be better assigned to them. My weakness on the other hand could be my inability to express my thoughts in a concise way where my groupmates can easily understand the plan I want them to execute.
Other people’s rating is a big help for me to become a better person. In my case, am not full surprised of their impression of me because it somehow almost the same as I self assessed myself.
The 360 assessment is an important practice in the workplace because it helps people be full aware of their image in the workplace. It helps the group to avoid misunderstanding with each other as they continue to build good relationship as they work as one system for the company.
Lastly, the self-stir assessment could help me become an effective leader by being informed of what I am look like as a leader for my subordinates.By having an idea then of my performance, I can adjust my behaviour and improve my weaknesses as I take lead the group in achieving our objectives.
Finding Equilibrium: Principle and Profit
It is an accepted fact that companies primary objective is to propagate continuous profitability in the interest of ensuring its Financial stability and companies’ overall health. Business leaders opt for maximization of resources, utilization of lower costs, and gravitating to what will benefit the company the most. However, it is vital to uphold a sound, favorable corporate governance, coupled with observing principles that take into account the stakeholders of every businesses’ pursuit. This, in effect, will lead to balance of interests.
In my view, while profit is a primary key factor for businesses. Business leaders must know how to abide by a governing code of ethics that pose as a “check & balance” for companies. Historically, in the global sense, there have been rampant issues concerning the exploitation of companies in different avenues of society. Labor exploitation, environmental destruction, and connivance in fabricating information. Case is point, the 2008 financial Crisis cause a massive global turmoil due to unethical practices perpetrated by top-managements. The problem has always been the self-serving interest of individuals, who make the final say in business pursuits. With that said, leaders must learn from the past. The destructive activities that ruptured countries due to poor corporate governance must serve as a poignant reminder to future generations.
A sense of purpose is what crystallizes the essence of a leader. A leader must assess his/her purpose based on what won’t only benefit his/her organization’s interest, but also external stakeholders. A purpose is a vision to establish a leader’s goals of promoting the greater good. Ethical Innovation and constant Development are primary objectives of purpose. In the advent of technology, there seem to be a robust expansion of innovation, which poses a problem to humans. Man-made robots are outsmarting humans in many avenues of life, particularly labor, and will soon be detrimental to society. Leaders must take action in preventing worst circumstances. Corporate Governance must be dynamic in this sense. It must adapt to current developments, so as to erect barriers to which innovation can only reach. To that end, Innovation must be a ground for supplementing human activities; not fully overtaking the pursuit of humans.
A Business leader must bear the utmost responsibility of directing as to where the organization is gearing. A leader must have an “end in mind” to begin with. He/she must foresee the status of his/her organization years from now in order to determine the right path the organization must undertake in pursuing its goals and objectives. Integrity and moral principles are solid fundamentals of a leader. A leader must stand as a leading example to constituents, in order to be emulated and be upheld. With the right guidance and leadership, the whole organization will follow. Indubitably, it all boils down to what mindset will the leader impart to his/her organization
