Maria didn’t like to be called Maria. She always thought it was too...formal...and besides. No one ever rolled the R properly and like her abuella said, if you can’t say it right you shouldn’t say it at all.

Staring at the cabin doors for a second and marveling how ominous it looked, she held onto her duffle bag and old maroon velvet tote bag and trudged inside the cabin. This was her home now, and even though she probably looked like a mess and looked like someone who just wanted to be left alone, all she wanted was someone she could hug and cry on.

It’s not everyday your only family member dies right in front of you, and a random goat person brings you to a camp in the middle of the woods.

"i'm going to get good and drunk and stay inside." i pause for a moment, an insult to get her to leave sitting on the tip of my tongue. but ... i change my mind. "you can join me, if you want."
