A Comment on the Aomeanie issue

Hi guys,

This note is specially addressed to pyrodynamo, sicariorum and half-sleeping, and other influential members of the Kuroko no Basuke fandom.

This is pinecone & bob2ff, both fanfiction writers in the KuroBasu fandom. We wanted to comment on the recent plagiarism issue concerning aomeanie, pyrodynamo and idyllis, and Tre anon on AO3. We don’t know aomeanie at all. But we are personally worried of the fact that aomeanie has been driven out of the fandom, and we think that the handling of the situation has been thrown out of control.

We have been resting from the fandom for a while, but we feel that we have a responsibility to comment now that we know about this issue. We do not want to be apathetic bystanders,and this is why we are commenting on this issue.

Firstly, we fully disclose that we are commenting from an urge to offer emotional support to aomeanie. We think that aomeanie needs a voice from her perspective, as we are worried about her current psychological / physical state. We believe, above all things, in treating others decently. Whether plagiarism has been done or not, whether it’s done repeatedly, or even if another person has treated us badly. This is our fundamental, unshakeable belief. We all love KnB after all, and in our shared love for the fandom, we should treat each other as part of a community,

Next, this part is on the matter of plagiarism as a whole, and how we choose to deal with it as members of a fandom. This matter first came to our attention because people influential in the Kuroko no Basuke fandom, namely sicariorum and half-sleeping, have been signal boosting this issue. Frankly, we are not so sure that signal boosting is the best way to deal with this issue, and plagiarism in general.

There are two issues this commentary deals with:

Whether it constitutes as plagiarism or not

If it is plagiarism, how to deal with it

For the first issue: Whether it constitutes as plagiarism or not

There are currently no controls put in place in fanfiction for whether something is plagiarism or not. In the first place, we are all using Fujimaki’s characters as a tribute when we write about it. Sure, we create our own original plotlines and dialogue associated with it, but in the end, we are still all trying to learn from the characters created by Fujimaki, and using the elements of his plotline and characterization to further our writing skills.

If you read Neil Gaiman’s opinion on fanfiction, that is exactly how we feel about this issue.

We will say in public now, we are completely okay with people using our storylines and learning from them, because we are firmly in the camp that fanfiction is a training ground for actual writing, and if our stuff helps people learn to write better, we would accept that as the highest compliment. We completely understand the emotional need to be possessive over creativity, but in the medium of fanfiction, there are so many overlaps and common tropes that the lines get very blurred. The fact that there are no laws or legal processes associated with this medium makes it even more complicated.

That leads us to the second issue, which is, how to deal with it if it is plagiarism.

For the second issue: If it is plagiarism, how to deal with it

The fact is, it seems to us that aomeanie, at least from her messages to pyrodynamo, that she is very concerned about whether what she is doing is plagiarism or not. She reached out to ensure that she wasn't committing plagiarism, and she was just trying to learn.

This is why we are worried about the fact that all this signal boosting and public call-outs have driven her completely out of the fandom. We personally do not believe that this is the right way to deal with this issue, or plagiarism. Firstly, this is because aomeanie ends up not learning at all. Instead, she is driven out of the fandom.

Secondly, if plagiarism is occurring, then we believe the medium of fanfiction is such that the best way to deal with it is, if it really is a matter of personal interest, to firstly reach out to the supposed plagiarizer. Maybe the plagiarizer is like aomeanie, and needs guidance in what’s plagiarism vs. what’s inspiration. The fact that she looks up to writers like idyllis and pyrodynamo should mean all the more that they could be her mentors.

If the plagiarizer really meant to plagiarise, then maybe signal boosting could be the way to deal with it. But the fact is, the medium of the Internet and Tumblr is such that signal boosting could occur with just a click of the button. It is so easy to share, and thus, it is too easy to ruin the reputation of someone who could just be trying to learn. It is too easy to drive someone out of a fandom, and too easy to make assumptions about them, reasonable or not.

We know this is a long commentary...but because this issue is so complex, it requires a long post. An issue this multi-faceted, emotionally-charged and subjective requires extended discussion. It deserves more than just a click to reblog/signal boost, or short-phrased anon asks.

We are open to receive asks, replies, etc. and welcome further discourse and discussion on this issue.

23. If you were to revise one of your older fics from start to finish, which would it be and why?

Hmmm... Older fics huh... Definitely the fics from my Naruto days because all of the are so weaboo-ish. Also Hetalia fics.. Talking about the more recent one though... Our Love Will Someday Finds Happiness. Because I want to re-write so the twist is more unexpected. And I am kinda meeehhh with how I write it, after I re-read it again now.

31. Do you take liberties with canon or are you very strict about your fic being canon compliant?

It depends really. I love writing AU.. But if we are talking about writing it from canon timeline, usually I just write it along the canon timeline with a little tweak in the time hole (is this even a word). So, yeah, depends on what I write.. So.. Taking liberties with canon I guess?

35. Would you ever kill off a canon character?

Yes. Done that. Well, off-screen....... Does it count if I kill canonly death character? I have 2 fics for that...... Actually.. Yeah. I have. With a short drabble.

Is there a trope you’ve yet to try your hand at, but really want to?

I really want to write a super fluffy and sweet mido/aka family fic where everything is happy and so cute but I don’t have the capacity to write cute stuff right now T.T My attempt at fluff has been stiff recently o|-<

If you could write the sequel (or prequel) to any fic out there not written by yourself, which would you choose?

I would want to write a sequel of “Saving Grace” by meclanitea where Akashi would talk to Midorima and restore their friendship and stuff like that, that fic was really sad even though it was short. I just want Midorima to be happy :) That fic was 100% relevant, given that it was written waaay before the Rakuzan vs Seirin match ended, and it hurts right where it should. :’(

Talk about your current wips.

This is gonna be long. Hahahaha I actually have 18 wips due to my lack of focus to finish a single one. Thanks to Emily though who told me to change that habit and focus on a single one. So about my other wips, all aka/mido/aka anyway hahaha, I’m gonna talk about my favorites :’)

1. There’s this mermaid au Emily and I talked about. Akashi is the merman and he gets to meet Mido who is human when they were just children. And yeah they became friends and grew closer to each other. There’s this part where they compose a song together. The conflict was when the town was plagued by a disease and Mido is dying so Akashi seeks the help of the sea witch or the sea king(idk I think the king would work better) and the price to pay was Mido’s memories of him and everything about mermaids, and that he’s not allowed to get in contact with him again or else Mido will still die. He agrees to it. So like, Mido gets to live without any memories of Akashi and he lives a normal life and marries and has his own family. Akashi sees this all from afar the ocean and he misses him. Mido sometimes catches himself staring at the ocean and feeling something missing inside of him that he can’t quite put a finger on. And yeah sometimes he hums a tune and his children asks him what’s that song and he says he doesn’t know, it’s been with him somehow. So time goes by and Mido dies but merpeople live longer and age differently so Akashi witnesses his funeral where they scatter his ashes onto the sea and Akashi gives him his version of a funeral and he sings the song they composed together. I actually don’t know what’s the point of this story but Emily and I think it’s hella sad and we love sad so…

2. There’s this childhood fic I thought about when I saw the BPS theme about Childhood, though I didn’t get to finish it in time, and is still not finished T.T I joked about entitling it “three games they used to play (and one that they still do) and something like that. Those three games were cutesy childhood stuff where in the first part, Akashi meets Mido i the playground and that’s where they first played. The second part was when they started playing house in Akashi’s estate and Akashi plays the mom while Mido plays the dad. And there’s this scene like Akashi doesn’t know how to play house so Mido said just do what he sees his mother do in the house so when they were acting out a scene where Mido is supposed to go to work, Akashi kisses his forehead hahahaha Mido gets flustered but he kisses Akashi’s cheek back and he says he saw his dad do it once. The third game was playing doctor, I think although I still haven’t written anything on this part. And then things happen and they grow apart, even though they go to the same school, they do not acknowledge each other’s existence, which is the one game that they still play.

3. There’s this fic I’ve started so long ago but I can’t continue and it’s about Akashi getting married and he invites the whole of GoM on it. There was a delay and he gets to talk to Mido and they talk about stuff and what happened in the past years because they have not contacted each other since their break up and Akashi says he doesn’t want to get married and he loves Mido still, and that Mido can stop the wedding if he tells him to. And he says he’d wait in the church for him to stop it, and Akashi believes Mido will do it because he sees in Mido’s eyes that he loves him still, too. So when the ceremony started and the priest asks if there was anyone against the wedding, he waits hopefully. But no one says anything, and he turns around and he sees Mido nowhere. So yeah Mido leaves because even though he can still have Akashi, he knows that it will not be good for him if they will be together. I don’t know, I just wanted to write some painful stuff back then hahahah

4. And this certain wip is the one I’ve been focusing on for the past three weeks. It’s another kingdom au thing hahahaha Akashi is the prince and Mido is just a stable boy. They meet when they were children when Akashi fell off from his horse and Mido helped him and cleans his wounds. He becomes Aka’s first friend. He has him promoted to being his personal servant and stuff like that. Akashi actually teaches him how to read and write because he wants him to be his adviser when he becomes king. He also gives him his eyeglasses when Mido’s eyes started to become bad. There’s so many fluffy/romantic stuff that happens, I especially love their first kiss :’) but after that first kiss, Aka’s father, the king, comes to the picture and yeah stuff happens, Mido gets jailed and was sentenced death(the king hates him for having a relationship with his son so). Akashi visits him and cleans his wounds, just like Mido did when they first met. Akashi tries to negotiate with his father, so they play chess. If he wins, Mido gets saved but exiled. If he loses, he has to watch Mido’s public execution. He loses. He spends Mido’s remaining time with him in the dungeon and they talk about stuff and many recollections which actually hurts me a lot. There was a part where they talked about having a future in another life, where they could have a family. Mido doesn’t forget it and he actually has a ring made way before his imprisonment. So he gives it to Akashi to remind him of their happiness and yeah. Mido gets hanged while Akashi watches(what a cruel father, idk). I planned to end it with a sad monologue from Akashi but I’ve been convinced to end it happily somehow, so I would end it with Mido and Akashi reincarnated in another life. And they were waiting in a school, the bell rings, and their two kids come running excitedly to them. And they carry them and stuff and they were a happy family in this other life, just like what Mido and Akashi talked about some lives ago. o|-<
