Reigning Suleiman the Magnificent in Turkey, one of his bravest pirates, the emir Dragut, attacked the southeastern coast of Sicily, from Catania to Syracuse and then, having arrived in Donnalucata, he descended to the ground with his men to raid until in Scicli and Modica. The local nobles gathered their soldiers and with the help of the population intercepted him near Scicli in the Mulici or Milizie district. After a bloody battle, the pirates retreated. The event had a great resonance locally and the contemporary notary Di Lorenzo gave an ample account of it describing the event and adding how, in the most bloody moment, when the Sicilians were about to succumb to the Turks appeared from Donnalucata a woman on horseback who brandishing the sword attack the Turkish line behind disarranging the rows and allowing the victory of the local troops. That woman was called the Madonna di Mulici or Madonna delle Milizie. Then I begin the cult of the Madonna delle Milizie with a rite that has changed and been revised over time and the creation of a sanctuary dedicated to her in 1700. In 1800, to the procession of the Madonna on horseback, other events were added where professional actors improvised the event that ended in a bloody battle. The party then arrived at the beginning of the 1900s where it was codified in its current form, with the displacement of the event at the time of the Normans, Dragut becoming the Belcane emir and the Sicilian troops that are led by the great Roger. The intervention of the Madonna delle Milizie remains unchanged which with her arrival allows the victory of the Sicilians. On the last Saturday of May the party is repeated with the help of great choreographies and important local actors. This year, due to the European elections, the party was moved to 15 June. If you participate do not miss eating sweets “Teste di Turco”.
