I actually find it really interesting narratively how Sidney chooses to turn down a drink in the Swamp prior to his examination of Jerry, then once he realizes what he's about to ask BJ and Hawk to do—completely untrained and unprepared for the reality of what might be about to occur—he's the one who proposes the drink pre-hypnosis session.
