people can sometimes be dismissive of gray colors because they're seen as "boring" or "dull," but i think that really overlooks the artistic utility and beauty of desaturation. like, colors that are desaturated inherently have less contrast even when their hue is very different, because they're all closer to being grayscale. gray is spongy and gluelike in the way it can bridge different ends of the color spectrum by having them essentially meet around the middle, without necessarily being readable as a whole mess of different colors. plus, the fact that it’s low contrast makes it an extremely valuable compositional tool — our eyes tend to be drawn towards areas of high contrast, and so by smartly using a mixture of desaturated and saturated colors, you can make certain elements of an image really pop. the great thing is that you don’t even need to make the saturated colors that saturated in order for them to stand out — contrast, much like tone, is all relative. and they’re pretty! there’s something beautiful about, say, the sun shining through a dark and overcast sky.
