through lots of hard work! they became a knight in what’s probably the most common and traditional way in their world - they left home in their early teens and moved to a larger walled town called Palisade, where they worked as part of the castle staff for several years (stablehand, squire, and then eventually castle guard), all the while picking up the skills expected of a knight. Once old enough, someone who wants to be a knight has to attend a series of trials (a tournament I guess) and be selected by one of the seven Knight Conclaves, which are orders of knights which train their initiates in whatever their specialty is (Valour, Strength, Wisdom, etc.) After getting their requests to attend the conclave trials rejected several times, Lock eventually gets through and is selected for the Conclave of Protection, and they begin their proper training to become a knight! After that their memory is a little bit hazy... They definitely became a knight, because they bear the insignia and the sword, but they’re not sure when or where... (their whole story arc involves them searching for their lost memories!)
