When Sidney Hopper was six, her parents moved she and her baby sister from Hawkins to New York. She still got to visit her best friend, Jonathan, once a year, and her life was great. Life was great right up until she was ten, when her baby sister got diagnosed with cancer. At twelve, she lost her sister, and at thirteen, her parents got divorced and she moved back to Hawkins with her dad.
But the Sidney who returned to Hawkins wasn’t the same girl who’d left. Gone was the bubbly little girl who was never seen without Jonathan Byers, and in her place was a complete stranger. A shell of a girl, all fake smiles and empty words, who walked right past Jonathan on the first day of school and never looked back. A part of Sidney had died with Sarah, and barely a corpse remained.
By 1983, Sidney had made a new name for herself. Queen of Hawkins. Steve Harrington’s other half. Professional party girl. She filled the hole that Sarah left with alcohol and fake friends, partying until she forgot her own name, and pretending that she wasn’t painfully in love with Steve Harrington. But then Steve chooses Nancy, then Barb disappears, then Will — Will fucking Byers, the boy she’d held the day he was born, her baby brother in all but blood — turns up dead, and every wall that Sidney had ever built collapsed, until nothing was left but static, and a void desperate to be filled.
