Mom’s Birthday
It was early morning when three loud knocks sounded at the door waking Dis from her peaceful slumber. Slowly she opened her eyes and sat up thinking it may have been her imagination. As she began to lay back down, three loud knocks sounded again. She rolled out of bed wraping herself in an old shawl and opened the door to find none other than her older brother, Thorin.
“Come sister. I need to show you something very important.” Thorin spoke in a soft tone just above a whisper.
“But … It’s … It’s too early. What about the boys? I'd rather not wake them." Dis clung to the shawl as Thorin's eyes widened.
“No!” Thorin then took Dis into his arms and she laughed in surprise as Thorin is not known to be so impulsive. As they left her home, Thorin pushed aside the gateway and wrapped his fur coat around his shoulders covering his sister. Dis clung to Thorin's neck still laughing like a child. Thorin was reminded how much her laughter was so much like Kili's and the sound was contagious. Looking down at his sister, still her night clothes, Thorin began to laugh with her. Thorin continued down the quite roads refusing to let Dis walk as it was cold and she didn't have any shoes. He finally stopped in front of thick hedge, full of twigs and heavy leaves. Dis looked with curiosity as she had never seen this size groth before. Thorin slowly placed her on the ground and Dis watched as her his brother began looking for something among the foliage. When he found what he wanted, he pushed aside a particularly large curtian of foliage with a strong armed and motioned for his sister to his side. She heard a 'click' and a door opened. The opening was small, smaller than a Dwarf or Hobbit, perhaps large enough for a goat. Thorin croched down and entered the small doorway. Dis was still bewildered by the sight until the sight of her brother's hand beckoning to follow appeared. Dis took her brothers hand and he guided her through the door. As she crossed through the threshold, she cast a glance towards Thorin, who wore the most youthful grin on his face and urged her to look around. Dis spared to look around as was greated by the most beautiful sight, second only to her beloved children. Hidden far from sight and beyond the hedge, was a huge garden full of flowers of all colors. The sun was begining to rise giving the garden a youthful glow. Dis breathed in the cool air and took in the soothing grass on the soles of her feet. She wriggled her toes and covered her mouth trying to hide a goofy grin. Her other hand was still intwined with Thorin's and she held tight to him fearing if she let go, it was all magic and it would all disappear.
“Thorin it's beautiful …” She turned back to Thorin, smiling and giving him a strong embrace. “Thank you, it’s lovely”
Thorin hugged her back with a genuine smile and placed a kiss on her cheeck. “There’s more … Just a moment.”
Thorin led her through the garden to a large oak tree where Dis observed a rope swing thorwn over one of the large, strong branches and Thorin motioned for her to sit. Dis took in her sourrounds and marveled over how carefree and excited the garden had made her feel, like a young Dwarrow again so many years ago. Meanwhile Thorin had gathered several flowers and returned to Dis, placing a wreath upon her head and affectionately handed her a bouquet of flowers They sat for sometime in the garden enjoying each other's company as the sun continued to rise reminding them the day was just begining. Thorin decided they should leave, and Dis agreed though she wished she could stay forever. As they passed through the door of the Garden, Thorin gently lifted his sister into his arms once more and she laughed, feeling spoiled and treated so well. She welcomed the strong embrace of her older brother and felt safe in his arms. He would always protect and watch over her and took in the moment to look at him and his strong features. Dis then leaned over and pressed a kiss Thorin’s cheek and whispered a sincere “thank you”. Thorin just smiled and continued walking. As they arrived back home, Thorin gently set his sister down and deposited his heavy coat on the door hook. There was a sound of clinking cutlery and whispers of two youthful men towards the back of the house and the joyful sounds of scheming conversation. Dis tip-toed across the room and peered through a crack in the doorway with intentions to surprise the boys who were obviously up to something. When she reached the the doorway, she stopped paralyzed at the hilarious scene in front of her. Kili was wearing her apron that was now sporting numerous amounts of dirt and flour and was attemping to shout at Fili not to touch the cake. All with a large strawberry shoved in his mouth disorting his speech. Fili's sleeves were held up with strings and the same cake mess was covering his arms and held a small necklace of pearls in his hand. They startled in an instant when they realized their mother was at the door.
“Uncle!!! You came too soon!” Kili cried, wiping his hands on the apron.
“Sorry,” Thorin appeared in the doorway giving him a smile and a shrug.
Fili washed his hands in the sink and went to Dis, taking her hands and leading her to into the kitchen. Dis quitely sat and Fili held out his arms motioning his mother to lower her head and Fili placed the necklace over his mother's head. While Fili had her distracted, Kili appeared with single candle lit on the cake. Thorin came into the kitchen and tied her hair with a ribbon. Dis quickly realized, all three of the boys had their hear worn in the same fashion and there was a pause.. All at once, they shouted-
“HAPPY BIRTHDAY !!”
After the annoucement, Fili took a handful of flour and blew it into Kili's face laughing. In retaliation, Kili grabbed a small handful of cake and threw it at his brother. Neither of the boys expected their uncle to to join in and he began lifting the entire cake. Fili and Kili sprang from their seats and ran behind her mother pleading for help from their mother until Dis shouted,
" Hey! I haven't blown out the candle yet!" Dis blew out the candle and prompty threw a handful of cake striking her brother and the small home erupted into laughter and love.
