Once Upon...

The concert of sounds contained within The Collector’s museum were never as defeaning as it’s master’s own footsteps. The hum of machines, the roars of ancient beasts, nor the various gasps or groans of sentient species all contained. Taneleer Tivan was forever a powerful presence in Knowhere, and only made more so when amongst his vast collection. Some say they could see the touch of madness within him when he interacted with it, something he felt so deeply and strongly for each and every piece that it could freighten any mortal.

He was standing statuesque before a static display when one of his servants approached him. She was his top assistant, so she was his current Carina. “My Master.” She greeted as she bowed. “I have come to fetch you as requested. We have prepared everything for your guests.”

Taneleer’s stoic face never shifted. There was no malice in it, but nor was there a hint of joy. Only distant eyes and a neutral expression. He did not speak to Carina; his servants hardly needed praise for doing the very simple tasks he assigned them. The woman stood straight and still as her master turned from the display and began to walk away. She lingered then, looking at it herself. To her it was very plain for being the centerpiece of the entire wing. A full suit, helmet, and a collection of weapons. Some glowed with an unfamiliar power, but she also didn’t understand a lot of the item contained in Taneleer’s museum.

Yet this display connected to various others, from texts to cut-away rooms, entire ships and mounted, monsterous carcasses. Artifacts from all over the galaxy, stories, weapons, and clothes from various species all joined by the same flames.

The name on the display was unfamiliar to her, as were the titles beneath it.

Further down there were dates listed. A date of birth...and a date of death.

It centuries ago.

“To me Carina.”

“Yes Master.” The woman pulled her attention from the display obediently to follow Tivan. She walked behind him, matching his pace perfectly. She desired to speak, to ask about what drew Taneleer to this wing so often, but she knew it was not her place. Not until she was offer the chance to ask.

“It is natural you do not know this history.” Tivan said. He’d seen a future where she had spoken her mind, but to Carina it was as if he had read it instead. “The last great trade war claimed many pirate factions. Rouges and thieves are eternal, but ones who harbor the honor and dedication it took to be a Ravager were rare.”

Their kind died out. They’d fought to defend all of their brethren, their freedom, to the last.

Carina glanced to one side, a holo display giving her pause. “That was the leader?” He looked like the man from the picture in the display. Taneleer paused in his steps, as did his assistants. The holo display was not a static image, but a full moving model of Stakar. It was a program, a very limited one, but it still smiled at them when acknowledged. “That’s right.” Taneleer confirmed. “I worked with him for many years.”

“Really?” Now the assistant’s interest was stoked enough to give her some confidence. Tivan did like it when his servants were curious, so long as it was for what they preserved and not about him personally. “All of these artifacts, they must have been great. Did you always know they would be special?”

Taneleer let that question hang as he watched the holo display. Then, a rare smile graced his lips, one that covered the glint of pain in his eyes. “Not at first.” He said. “But it did not take long before I saw their potential. It began with a vision.”

A dream.
