me in chem: i love sigfigs so much!! they’re so easy!! if sigfigs didn’t exist i would be extra depressed!! sigfigs 4 life<3

me writing my lab reports late at night: fuck if i know how many sigfigs this thing needs. why are only some figures significant? what does that say about us? are some of us significant while others are just figures?

Hey! Okay, so there are four main rules with significant figures. (Number one) if there are 0's at the front they don't count as a place until you get to the first number that isn't a 0, after that every number counts including 0's. (Number two) Now you count up the numbers (only the ones that are after any 0's at the front if there are any) until you go to the correct amount of places for the amount of significant figures (3 significant figures = 3 numbers). (Number three) Once you get to the correct amount of significant figures you either round up or down depending on what the next number is (if its above 5 the last number goes up, if its below 5 the number stays the same). (Number four) If the number is before the decimal point you replace all the numbers after the significant figure with 0's (including the one you did rounding with), if it's after the decimal point you cut off all of the rest of the numbers (including the one that you rounded with.)

Examples:

(E.g 1) 0.05279484 to 4 significant figures

0.05279 484

0.05279484

0.05279 = 4 significant figures

(E.g 2) 654865 to 3 significant figures:

654 865

655865

655000 = 3 significant figures
