Summary: Though Katharine has been sworn as queen, the fight for the crown is far from over. A rebellion has begun to blossom, with a new Legion Queen at its head. The island’s protector, the mist, has begun to swallow people whole and wash up maimed remains on the shores. With the occurrences of these strange events, Arsinoe and Mirabella have begun to receive strange messages from the famous Blue Queen, who ruled 400 years ago, all of which point back to the island of Fennbirn.
Review: Although it can be a rare occurrence, the books in this series gradually get better and more exciting as they progress. While reading Two Dark Reigns, I found myself constantly at the edge of my seat, begging to see what happens in the next chapter. Blake’s craft does an excellent job of keeping the reader engaged as the series goes on, which continues to get even darker and more thrilling. Aside from each entertaining story contained in each book, Blake’s writing dives beyond the surface of a fun story. The text stresses the importance of controlling your own fate, despite the inconveniences in the future. Blake also talks about the impact of modernizing society, and the benefits it will bring in the future. On the mainland, Arsinoe and Mirabella are expected to conform to the gender roles of women; back on the island, the current form of government is no longer able to suit the needs of the people, and must change. From changing old ways, to controlling one’s fate, and to staying true to oneself, Kendare Blake shows her readers the relevance current issues hold in reality and in the world of fiction.
