Sightrunning through the Virgin Islands
A unique experience combining sightseeing, fitness, and FUN in St. Thomas
St. Thomas is known as the most cosmopolitan of the U.S. Virgin Islands, an energetic hub with abundant Caribbean culture and history. At just under 32 square miles with a population of ~50,000, the island gives the experience of a secluded paradise while simultaneously bursting with things to do.
Active Island Tours & Events leads visitors on guided running tours, offering them a unique opportunity to experience all that the island has to offer on two courses: one focusing on the rich history and culture of the island, and the other focusing on enjoying the secluded Caribbean paradise.
Historic Waterfront 5K Running Tour
Explore the rich history of St. Thomas on this 5K tour that gives runners up-close exposure to the Danish roots of this now American-owned island.
Your fun and informative tour guide will lead you through Charlotte Amalie, the island’s downtown area that is overflowing with history. You’ll stand on the steps of Fort Christian, a Danish-built fort overlooking the harbor that was erected in the early 1670s when the Danish took possession of the island. The fort is the oldest standing structure in the U.S. Virgin Islands and has been designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark.
The area now known as Charlotte Amalie was once a pirates’ den, known in the late 1600s as “Taphus,” meaning “beer hall” or “tap house.” Your tour guide will point out popular pirate hangouts and share some fascinating stories of the more well-known seafarers.
The most challenging – and rewarding – part of this tour is climbing the 99 Steps, one of St. Thomas’s most famous landmarks that was built in the 1700s out of bricks originally brought from Denmark as ballast in the hulls of the ships. Waiting for you at the top is one of the most breathtaking views that can be found on the island.
St. Thomas had an established slave trade and plantations were spread throughout the island. Slavery was eventually abolished in the Danish West Indian Islands in 1848, following a rebellion on St. Croix. You’ll run past the home of the Danish governor who abolished slavery, as well as a park that commemorates the emancipation.
In 1917, the United States bought the Danish West Indies for $25 million. While running along the waterfront, your tour guide will point out nearby Hassel Island, which housed a U.S. Navy naval station that was in operation during World War I and World War II. This ~135 acre island was once connected to St. Thomas, but was separated by the Danish Government in 1860 to improve circulation of the Charlotte Amalie harbor in an effort to prevent illnesses like cholera and malaria.
At the conclusion of the 3.1 mile run, your tour guide will walk you to Mojo’s Rum and Surf Shack, a rum hut that features swings in the place of barstools, where you can enjoy your free Cruzan Rum cocktail.
East End-eavor 5K Running Tour
Dramatically different from the Historic Waterfront 5K, our all terrain East End-eavor 5K Running Tour will satisfy adventurous runners seeking to challenge themselves away from the hustle and bustle in a quiet, secluded area of the island known only by locals.
The tour begins on the East End of St. Thomas, outside of Latitude 18, a 25-year-old landmark restaurant/bar featuring authentic Caribbean cuisine and nightly live music. Your tour guide will lead you through the palm trees onto a stunning white sand beach, where you can look out to the sailboats resting peacefully on the strikingly turquoise water. From there, you’ll run up an uphill rocky trail that leads you to a quiet street comprised of luxury villas and breathtaking views.
Your tour guide will give you a local’s perspective as he/she leads you out to a secluded peninsula that boasts magnificent views of nearby islands like St. John, Great St. James, Lovango Cay, the British Virgin Islands, and more. St. Thomas is just one of over 100 Virgin Islands, islets and cays that are spread over less than 200 square miles. Many of these islands can be seen from the East End of St. Thomas.
This conversational tour experience passes through rolling hills, beaches, and trails, giving the participants a unique sightseeing opportunity through an area frequented by locals that visitors typically don’t get to see.
At the conclusion of the 3.1 mile run, your tour guide will walk you to Secret Harbour Beach Resort, which lies on a palm-tree shaded swimming/snorkeling beach with pristine Caribbean blue water and sugary sand. Enjoy your free Cruzan Rum cocktail at the Tiki Bar-style Cruzan Beach Club, which offers a delicious fusion of Caribbean and Southwest cuisines.
Private Tours
If you are looking for a specific experience, we’d be happy to arrange a private running tour that is entirely customized to you. We know these islands inside and out, and have a number of options for visitors seeking a personalized experience. We strongly caution visitors against trying to go for a run on their own, as our island is a very hilly one, mostly made up of steep, curving roads that are very dangerous to travel by foot. Let us lead you along the safe routes, and we’ll do some sightseeing while we’re at it.
A Salty Workout Deserves A Sweet Reward
Because we believe every salty workout deserves a sweet reward, we finish each tour off with a complimentary Cruzan Rum cocktail, a high performance moisture wicking shirt, a bottled water, and digital tour photos so you can hold onto the memories forever.
With the average high temperature only ranging a whopping 5 degrees at any point during the year (85-90°F, 29-32°C), it’s ALWAYS a good time to visit the beautiful island of St. Thomas.
