लक्कन दानदेश जो कि देवराय द्वितीय का नायक था ने 15 वीं सदी में तुंगभद्रा नदी के किनारे- हम्पी (वेल्लारी कर्नाटक ) में शिव को समर्पित विरूपाक्ष मंदिर का निर्माण कराया।इसे पम्पापति भी कहा जाता है जो एक स्थानीय देवी पम्पा से शिव के संयोग का प्रतीक है। पम्पा तुंगभद्रा का प्रतीक हैं।महाबलेश्वर मंदिर के अतिरिक्त यह कर्नाटक का एक मात्र मंदिर है जहां शिव की दो मूर्तियों की पूजा होती है। Lakkan Dandesh the Naik of Vijaynagar king Devrai two constructed this shaiva temple named Virupaksha temple in the 15th century.It is also known as pampapati which symbolises the consortium of shiva with the local Devi pampa who represents river Tungabhadra. Along with Mahabaleshwar temple this is the only other temple where two idols of shiva is worshipped.
