«"... But you may prosper, for all that: there is no just God that governs the earth righteously, but a God of lies, that bears witness against the innocent."» (from Part One, Chapter I) ~ #JustFinished: Silas Marner (subtitled The Weaver of Raveloe) by #GeorgeEliot My rating: 9/10 ~ This short novel is my first George Eliot read. Having been very disappointed with the translation I read, I decided to read the original online, and I can say I really enjoyed the book, and I am definitely going to re-read in the future. Eliot's lines are really enchanting, there's something in her lines that you enjoy almost unconsciously in my opinion! ~ *may contain spoilers* It tells the story of Silas Marner, who, having unfortunately been betrayed at the town of Lantern Yard, moved to Raveloe, isolating himself from everyone and focusing only at his work of weaving, which I found really heartbreaking. The Raveloe is a really warm place but villagers, though not malevolent at all, have superstitious and fears at first; Eliot greatly reflects the attitudes towards the foreigners and "the fear of the unknown" in a village community. However, as the novel proceeds the villagers get really likeable. The psychological insight into the characters, which must be one of the first examples in English novel and I know it peaks in Eliot's later novel and masterpiece Middlemarch, is really significant, especially that of Godfrey Cass. His inner conversation with personified Anxiety during a party was amazing! The religious mentions were also great, the readers can encounter a broken faith, a rightful blasphemy, but, at the same time, some characters' meditating on mysterious good ways of Providence and "Their" greater plan. Silas' story kind of reminded me of Biblical story of Job. There were some super-boring parts, though, like the villagers' conversations at the Rainbow Inn, a social center for the villagers, in Chapter 6 and few others. However, as a conclusion, the novel is ultimately a tiny morale booster, worth-reading. ~ #bookreview #SilasMarner #Eppie #GodfreyCass #NancyLammeter #Raveloe #LanternYard #StonePits #MaryAnnEvans #TheWeaverOfRaveloe #book #books #bookstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/BstKHkSnnE3/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=fdvjl6o9twf9
