Someone knocks at his door (Silver? Crys?) and his mom steps in (how could you think it was anyone different, you pushed them away) with a small smile and a plate of food. Gold looks up at her, waving for Aibro to turn off the radio, and shakes his head.
"I'm not hungry," he croaks pitifully, but his mom tsks.
"You're only upset, Gold. You'll be hungry."
And he has every right to be, he thinks! He said sorry, he meant it, he meant every word he said to Silver then and he still managed to mess up. Mom hums and sits down by him, setting the plate of food on the far side of the bed.
"Do you know what you did wrong, sweetheart?"
"No. I apologized, like I should've, and I meant it. What's their problem?"
"Just because you apologize doesn't mean they're going to forgive you right off. It means you start showing that you mean it by changing a little each day." She pauses so she can readjust herself and pull Gold's head onto her lap, petting his head. It's comfy. Nice. Something she hasn't done in years because she hasn't had to, something she did when he had nightmares. "Do you want to list off what he said?"
"... I blew him off and told him he wasn't wanted. That I'm emotionally manipulating him and actin' like he's just there to make me happy. That I'm not apologizin' 'cause I mean it, but just to get his sympathy." His voice is cracking and he clears his throat. "That I don't give a damn about whether or not I hurt him. That I'm taking him for granted and don't consider his feelings."
"Now, what do you think you did wrong, out of those he listed?"
"Blew him off, told him he wasn't wanted."
That's quite a number down, and her petting stops. She's just laying her hand on his head now. Mom makes him sit up and he stares at her tiredly.
"You know those aren't the important ones, right?" Gentle, but firm. "Those are the ones he's least concerned about. The ones you should pay attention to come afterwards."
"But I'm not doin' those things, Mom! I ain't manipulatin' him" anymore "and he's not here just to make me happy. I'm happy around him, yeah, but... I'm not usin' him like that. Or at all. And I do care if I hurt him or not, that's why I'm so frustrated about this! It's not he has any other place to stay, anyway, so I mean... I'm not taking him for granted."
"... I guess I've done some things without considerin' his feelings first. More than some. A lot. But it's always worked out for the better and he took those apologies just fine, how come he can't just accept this one?"
"Because he loves you. He wants you to be a better person, Gold." Gold wants to say something, but she's not finished and he respects his mom too much to cut in. "You're a wonderful son, a loving and sweet boyfriend, a great friend - but like you said you have your flaws. They're the flaws that hurt your boyfriend. Are you going to accept that?"
Gold leans against his mom and wraps his arms around her the moment she does first, shaking his head. He doesn't want to hurt Silver just because he's a dumbass. If they're something he does all the time... Then would it be better if they just weren't together?
He loves Silver, and he knows Silver loves him (or his ideals, the blanket muffles) and even Crys...
... Crys probably had to deal with at least half of this more often than Silver ever had. He had to make it up to her too.
"That's my son." Mom pats his back and draws away, smiling. "You're not going to let anyone hurt the people you love, even if that person is you, right?"
"Right. I'm gonna fight for them." He sounds horrible, but he at least feels a little better. "I wanna keep them around. They're my partners."
"Then you'll do your best to the very end. Show, don't tell. You're good at that. Now, how about you try and eat? And if you don't want to see them for a while or you want to sort things out, why not go to Ecruteak? The towers might help settle you. They're very calming."
"And the Kimono Girls ain't too bad on the eyes either."
She laughs and nods. Gold grins, hugging his mom tight, and they spend the rest of the evening talking about future plans.
The house doesn't feel light anymore.
