The wonderful flowers of Garrya elliptica 'James Roof' (silk tassel) are blooming. This cultivar is a male plant that makes these long, grey-green catkins up to 20cm in length. This is a vigorous bushy evergreen shrub with dark green leaves.

The evergreen Garrya elliptica 'James Roof' (silk tassel) makes a large, vigorous shrub with leathery leaves. This cultivar is popular as in winter it produces male grey-green catkins up to 20cm in length. The female plants are rarely grown as they have shorter less dramatic flowers but these are followed by black fruit as seen here.

You might have noticed a few of these amazing trees dotted around at the moment, Garrya elliptica or Silk Tassel as they are commonly known. They are actually shrubs, but they grow to such a size that you could mistake them for trees. Evergreen, with gorgeous long panicles of flowers, they remind me of the silver foil we used to drape over the Christmas tree when I was a child.
