Find Your Light (Unless it Finds You)
There's this theater expression, "Find your light."
Essentially, it refers to you messing up your blocking and missing the light that's planned for you, so you're standing somewhere in the darkness.
If you're not standing where you're supposed to, nobody will see you, right?
But sometimes the lights aren't set in the scaffolding. Sometimes they swivel—a spotlight finding you.
Where the hell did this random post come from?
A song playing on the radio while I drove.
See, the first time I heard it I was at a basketball game at my old University, long after I'd graduated. My friend and her husband got free tickets and brought us.
Pre-game, they were putting random things on the jumbotron. They invited folks to dance to make it on the jumbotron and I thought, "why the hell not!?"
If I was going to have the full live college basketball experience, I was going to have all of it.
I remember as I stood my friend's husband saying, "There isn't even a camera anywhere near us."
It took less than ten seconds of me dancing for a camera to appear out of nowhere, focused on me, blasting me on the jumbotron for well over a minute.
Sometimes you need to find your light.
Sometimes you need to dance in the dark until it finds you.
My life hasn't always been sunshine and roses. Hell, it never has. But it's definitely getting closer.
And when the sun won't shine on me, I dance until it does. Because part of surviving the hells of this world is keeping yourself sane, celebrating victories, and searching for silver linings in cloudy skies.
Whether you find your light or it finds you, in that moment you're found. You're no longer in the dark. You're seen and heard.
That's my wish for you tonight.
