This is a painting of a photo my brother took from the summit of Silver Peak, Washington I recently completed as a commission. I know it's a different style and subject matter than what I normally post but I wanted to share it, both because I loved how it looked finished and because of how I felt while creating it.
I loved working on the beautiful view, but it also made me a little melancholy. Currently every member of my immediate family except myself are living in natural disaster areas. My parents and sister are in Lake Charles, LA which was devastated by hurricane Laura, my other sister and her family had the eye wall of Hurricane Sally pass over them this past week in FL. My brother in Washington who took this picture can't even go on a walk because of bad air quality from the fires on the west coast.
I am thankful to be in a place where I am safe to paint, where I can go outside and see changing fall colors, where can I stay inside and have power and running water. So many people I know don't have that right now.

Unusual Rock Formation - April 2022 This rock formation was alongside 42 Forest Road shortly before arriving back at Portal, Arizona. The second image is a closeup of one of the pillars that I think looks like a human face. MWM
Mountain Spring - April 2022 This spring is on the way back to Portal on 42 Forest Road. It has a small pull out area, but warns that no camping is allowed there. MWM
Mountain Ridge - April 2022 From Portal, Arizona, you can loop all the way round Silver Peak on narrow mountain roads. There are several fabulous views, including this top of the ridge rock formation that looks like a backbone. One the same ridge is a needle’s eye arch formed by two large rocks. MWM

The trail to the old fire lookout on Silver Peak wraps around the edge past picturesque rock outcrops, ever upward in a gentle enough climb until the very end. Steep steps lead to the final height. However, that isn't the actual peak. I continued on to the high point before returning to Cave Canyon below. From April 2019.
