“What about the mother?” she asked, already reaching for the handle
The Seer caught her by the wrist before she could turn it. “I’m sorry.”
“Ah, poor child.” The Seer was surprised to see what looked like genuine grief on the woman’s face at the loss of her Queen. “She was a good woman. And she would have made for a good mother.”
“She would have. But now it’s your responsibility. And bear it diligently. This child may not be the heir, but she’s got a grand destiny ahead of her.”
“Oh, destinies. I always thought it a bit silly to be putting so much responsibility on a newborn. Isn’t it enough that she’s here? Alive and breathing?” The nursemaid looked into the Seer’s eyes, searching for something, thought the Seer wasn’t quite sure what.
“You know, I think you just may be on to something there.” The Seer smiled and, with one last brush of her fingers against the child’s cheek, swept down the hall.
