Well to be honest Asuka is both a parody and the archetype for the Tsundere character. She was written as a parody of a character that was sort of getting popular at the time. However, like most things involving NGE, her character was totally blown out of proportion and lusted after by the fanbase and that's partially why Tsundere characters are so prevalent in anime today. People also tend to associate tsundere with being cold and angry (I've seen Mitsuki Nase from KnK called a tsundere, though she's mostly just shown sadistic tendencies towards the to male leads and a bit of fondness for the female lead.)

Asuka and her role in the story is one of my favorite parts of the story. I loved (LOVED) the elevator scene between her and Rei. I was extremely upset that they not only changed the scene, but that they made the scene about Shinji in the reboot, not about Asuka's closing off to the world because of her inability to be the best.

While the show is pretty violent, I've mentioned before my displeasure with how uber-sexualized 14 year old girls are from the fandom. The fandom did *not* appreciate me saying this.

I felt that the 80s game examples were important for the larger picture of the trope she featured. Since the games from that era defined the aspect of “default male character” which was the underlining issue.

I agree with you that they were important in terms of setting the picture up, but honestly I felt like they were detracting because nearly the entire time was spent focusing on extremely retro or cartoony games, like Bomberman, Mario, Scribblenauts, and so forth. I feel like after we got past the examples of the bows and the pink, we were pretty set. The games of that era might have defined it, but focusing mostly on those is not useful to talking about the industry now, IMO
