Headcanon:

James Ironwood has some Asian heritage. While not apparent in his own name, he had an Asian mother and Caucasian father. He took after his father's physique but inherited his mother's black hair and her eyes, and native language from her own teaching.

He can speak both English and Japanese fluently, but he didn't have anybody to speak foreign to.

Then, Clover Ebi comes along into the Ace Ops training. Clover is studious, wanting to learn Japanese to live up to his family's name: Ebi. While he was fluent, he also had nobody to talk to when he left home.

He would often chatter to himself in Japanese when he would get frustrated during training, and Ironwood could understand. He surprised Clover one day by asking, "Clover, how lucky would you say you are?" In Japanese.

Since then, the two men would exchange secret conversations between each other in their second language. Nobody understands and it's more funny than confusing.

Then the team finds out that Clover can speak more than five languages because that's how much fucken time he had growing up.

Lame headcanon but I love it.
