“Have you gotten a second opinion?” Elowen asked through tear filled eyes. “Maybe the doctor was wrong.”
“I’ve gotten four different doctor’s to tell me the exact same thing. I’m so sorry kids,” Brennen said as he looked across the table to see each of his children in various stages of shock at his news.
“But there must be something that they can do, right?” Colette piped in. “Some sort of treatment to at least give you more time?”
Brennen shook his head. “I’ve had a lot of time. No treatment that they can offer is worth the side effects.”
“But you can’t leave us,” Avia sobbed. “What will we do without you?”
“I’m not going anywhere yet my dear,” Brennen laughed, spurring on another coughing fit. “And besides, you have each other. That’s what matters most.”
“And you have us,” Freya said fervently. “Whatever you need, we will help.”
“I know you will,” Brennen smiled.

His Majesty spent the afternoon with his youngest grandchildren, Prince Aiden and Princess Elena. Princess Colette seems to be doing a wonderful job raising her children to the country’s mild surprise as she has settled into motherhood quite well.
“Listen here buddy, you’re not going anywhere”
“Good morning to you too, princess,” Damion chuckled lowly.
She stood and stared at him with her arms crossed and cocked an eyebrow, challenging him. “I’m not letting you do this. I’m not letting you resign.”
“Colette, you can’t-”
“I think you will find that I can. And I am. I care about you far too much to let you march out of here and leave me behind. I’m not just going to sit around and watch you walk away!”
“I have to. And besides, like I told you before Princess, I work for your father not you.”
She stared at him in shock. “Do you- do you not want to be with me?”
He laughed humorlessly and ran his hands over his face in frustration. “I want to be with you more than anything Colette, that’s the problem! How the hell am I supposed to do my job when all I can think about is how much I want to be kissing you?”
“But I need you! Not as a guard, not as a babysitter, but as a person. I think I have grown enough now that I don’t need anyone watching over me constantly, but I do need you in my life.”
“This sounds a lot like a conversation we’ve had before,” he mumbled. “You didn’t think you needed me back then, you won’t need me in the future.”
“A lot has changed since our first encounter,” she smiled softly, walking forward to take his hands in hers. “Please don’t leave me.”
He sighed and closed his eyes. “Selfishly, I really don’t think that I can.”
“So you’ll stay?” She asked with a glimmer of hope in her eyes.
“I can’t stay as your guard, but I won’t leave you.” He took her face in his hands and looked her deeply in the eyes. “I will never leave you, Colette.”
“I’m going to give my resignation tomorrow morning.”
Colette looked up to look him in the eyes. “Excuse me?”
Damion kissed her forehead and shook his own head. “I need to step down. There is no way that I can stay as your guard after this. I don’t regret what we have done, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t wrong.”
“You will do no such thing!” Colette sat up and stared down at his calm demeanor in complete shock. “We don’t need to tell anyone, you can stay as my guard and we can keep doing this. We can be together, we just need to figure out how.”
He shook his head and made to sit up with her. “I’m not going to be your dirty little secret, princess.”
She glared at him. “You aren’t leaving me. You can’t leave me! Just give me some time, okay? A few days, maybe a week?”
“I’m with you now, darling.”
