10 Fav QL Leads
RULES: Post GIFS of your 10 fav leads, then tag 10 friends.
I was tagged by both @braceletofteeth [here] and @lazzarella [here]~ thank you~ 💕
I'll be honest, I'm a bit worried ya'll are gonna find this boring because my faves are blatantly obvious and also very concentrated on actors I'm obsessed about, so I decided I'm going to include a little blurb about why I love them, just for fun. 🤭
...So I wrote more than I expected in the end, so in case anyone wants to ignore all that faffing about, I'm tagging up top: @airenyah @dramas-vs-novels @lutawolf @sunshinesanctuary @firstkanaphans @deepbutdazzlingdarkness @fortpeat @williamrikers @florbexter @visualtaehyun
(Please feel free to ignore if you've already been tagged/don't wanna do it~)
Style Sattawat Chayakorn (The Heart Killers)
I mean, come on, you all saw this coming. Style is everything to me: from the moment I watched the trailer up to the end he has held my entire heart. Some of it is because of the similarities we share (we both lost a parent to cancer when we were young), but what I especially love about this character is how loyal and loving he is. Style is the essence of hope in a series that is otherwise thematically very grim, and a light in the darkness that is the situation the characters find themselves in. His refusal to give up on either his love for Fadel or his friendship and support of Kant was, ultimately, the thing that brought the cast together, making him utterly essential to the narrative. He brought a grounded surrealism to the series despite his over-the-top personality that, for me, absolutely made the series.
Khabkluen (Star in My Mind)
Kluen has such a special place in my heart. I think many of us can relate to the feeling of knowing you like someone, maybe even knowing they may like you back, but just not having the courage to act on it until it's too late (especially if it's your first crush). I love this series so much because it captured the "what if you got a second chance?" idea and fleshed it out beautifully while utterly refusing to give the characters an easy out. Kluen and Dao face every single obstacle with the one glaring exception of unsupportive parents (don't you just LOVE Kluen's mom??), and wrestled with themselves and each other just as much as the external complications, and I really enjoyed that. Kluen's journey is a painfully realistic one, not just in the acceptance of his love for Dao and Dao's love for him - but the acceptance of himself, of who he is. It's this aspect of the narrative that I found so incredibly compelling. I watched SIMM for the first time while waiting for THK to drop, and it was such an interesting experience watching Joong's mastery of micro-expressions and how it differed with his portrayal of Fadel. Kluen is a silent open book - he never seems to be able to verbally express what he's trying to say but so much is communicated through Joong's eyes that it blew me away. Someday I really must write my 'in defence of' manifesto about this show because it irks me so much that it doesn't get the appreciation it deserves.
Sky and Prapai (Love in the Air)
Ok I'm cheating a little bit, but I was going to talk about both of them anyway, and I might as well do it this way. Also I just love both these moments because they really showcase the breadth of experience watching their story. LITA was my first BL series that captured me and dragged me into the BL fandom, and a lot of it was because Sky's story healed something foundational in me that I didn't even realise was still hurting. The show captured what it's like to be holding yourself together by the threads of necessity, to look strong while you're duct taping the cracks in your heart; to be alive but not really living. Every moment of Sky telling himself "it's okay" broke my heart, because I remember being there at one point, and if it wasn't for my family, especially my dad, I don't know if I'd be here today. I also love that for all of Sky's trauma, it never overshadows or erases who he is. His character is so vibrant and sassy and sarcastic that he was such a delight to watch from start (in Rain's story) to finish (in his own).
And I love Prapai because I think he was exactly what Sky needed. It's a controversial topic, and I don't usually go about purposely looking to start drama, but it surprises me how many times Prapai gets put on the 'red flag' list of MLs. Prapai is incredibly gentle and is moreover dealing with a Sky who has cripplingly low self-esteem and monumental trust issues. If you watch the dialogue carefully, Sky repeatedly claims that Prapai's interest in him is fake and that is the reason for his refusals. And because Prapai knows his interest is not only genuine but all-consuming (he took 3 months and 3 unsuccessful one-night-stands to figure that out), he persisted. I'm no longer in that space, but I can definitely see a section of my life where it would've taken someone like Prapai to have gotten past my very high walls, and I adore Prapai for how firmly and yet lovingly he dismantled Sky's.
Jiang Shao Peng (See Your Love)
This was the first series I've seen where they depicted a main character with a disability and I was blown away at how well the series handled it. From the realistic depiction of a deaf character in both the practical sense (eg. keeping his eyes trained on lips/hands vs eyes) and also environmental and emotional (the character deals with some very realistic trauma because of the consequences of his deafness) - the series is just incredibly well written and seemed (at least from my outsider's perspective) like they had people within the community advising which is amazing. That said, Shao Peng has my whole entire heart. He has this steady kindness, a warmth that belies the hurts and struggles he's faced. He's a character that has been forced to bend and bend, but because of his inner strength has managed not to shatter. It is this very kindness that catches Zi Xiang's interest at first and I adore how much their love story causes both of them to grow into better people and how Shao Peng's deafness is treated not as a burden or limitation, but rather as a unique aspect of who he is and who Zi Xiang loves.
Wu Suo Wei [and Chi Cheng, kinda at the end] (Revenged Love)
Gif by @rentfreecorex in this post. Sorry for the clunky crediting. I couldn't find this gif via the normal search, but thank you for the gif and the subs! <3
What can I say that hasn't already been said? Wu Suowei stole all our hearts, Chi Cheng's and mine included. At first it was watching him try to fool his way through his train wreck of a revenge plan, but I think what made it special was that it was also a journey of self-discovery. When WSW was with YY, he was constantly trying to please her, but with CC he was explicitly not trying to please him - and in so doing discovered who he was and what he actually liked. I chose this scene especially because it was such a turning point in WSW's character arc - not only has he accepted his love for CC, he's explicitly and openly telling CC that he wants to grow to be better matched with CC. The last few episodes also hit especially close to home and watching the way WSW dealt with his grief and how CC responded exactly how WSW needed in the moment will forever be something I'm grateful for. It was healing for me, personally, to watch - and I'm sure others who have lost a parent/s at a young age can relate to this.
Jiang Xiaoshuai (Revenged Love)
I love my sassy, scheming, ruthless (towards Guo Chengyu) doctor so much. I just love how strong he was, how he turned his hurt and trauma into a life of doing good for others. I love that he refused to give Guo Chengyu even the barest hint of hope until GCY proved himself worthy of his trust. I love that he was always there for Wu Suowei, and that their friendship really was ultimately just as important to them as their respective romantic narratives. He was just a joy of a character to watch.
Mahasamut (Love Sea)
Mahasamut is a character that I think didn't quite get the development he deserved in the series. The series focuses a lot more on Tongrak, but we get glimpses of the ocean depths that Mahasamut holds inside his chest as early as episode 1 when Mahasamut instantly clocked that Tongrak was terrified/triggered by him going missing from the boat. The series continues to give us hints as we go along - his tumultuous relationship with his father, his passion for the island and its inhabitants, the care with which he handles Tongrak, the ferocity of his protective anger when he faced off with Jak. But most of all, when he refuses to give Tongrak an easy out when Tongrak comes back to him at the end of the series. Mahasamut has the wisdom of the sea - he knows that if they are meant to be, it can only be if Tongrak fully embraces their love, and I adore the show and the character (and Fort! because he it was his suggestion that made Mame include it into the script in the end) for going there at the end. So while I wish we got more, what we already got made me fall head over heels for this man already. <3
Wen Kexing (Word of Honor)
I know there's some debate if this is "technically" BL, but I think the hairpin scene alone places it firmly in BL territory for me. And if that's not enough, then the scene where WKX gives all of his 內功 so ZZS could live should serve as more than enough. WKX is such a joy of a character. He's unhinged in the best way, brutal and unflinching in his quest for revenge and yet utterly besotted and doting towards his wife soulmate. This show had the full breadth of laugh out loud and sobbing my eyes out moments and I wish I could watch it again with fresh eyes cuz it was such an amazing experience.
Fadel Kasemsan (The Heart Killers)
Last but certainly not least, my darling Fadel. Oh how my heart ached for him as episode after episode we get to see how hard of a life he's had, how lonely he's been, how much of a burden he's had to shoulder, and how mired in his grief he still was until Style came along and... well, annoyed him into feeling something else. xD But his arc is one I really enjoyed following - it was just so nuanced and fleshed out and had such clear distinct pivotal moments where Fadel had to face the foundations of his world being shaken: Style asking him to be his boyfriend and saying that he wants to get to know the real Fadel, Style sharing about his mom's death, Fadel finding himself able to trust Style despite himself with the little secrets of himself like his parent's death and his love of heavy mental, the betrayal and the fall out, and the discovery that his heart was already Style's and it was too late to stop himself from falling in love. I loved watching Fadel grow and change and I love his story and his and Style's story and the way it culminates in a fully realised life together at the end of the show.
Honourable mention to Liu Qingge (SVSS)
I'mma be real shallow here - he's my fave because he's pretty and awkward and SQQ looks cute lying in his lap. He's not a lead in the show, but he's a lead in my heart. <3 ^_^
