5 for Simon?

5.) How did you choose their name and why? Was it simply based on vibes or is there any specific meaning behind the name? Are the reasons behind their name different in- and out of universe?

When I was naming Simon, I was looking for a name that had an aristocratic flair. Simon was picked partially because of Simon Basset of Bridgerton fame and other similar regency romance heroes. His middle names, Percival and Theodore, were chosen for the aristocratic vibes they gave me. In regards to his surname, Battersea was chosen for its aristocratic flair. I originally came across the surname in a middle grade, 1920s set novel.

In-universe, the name Simon was chosen by his parents because they both liked it and as he was their third son, it was getting difficult for them to agree on a name.

Weekend with the Grays: It’s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas (December 10, 2023)

“Thank you for coming, Simon,” Prim said, offering him a small smile.

“You’re welcome. I apologize for not being more festive. There’s been quite a bit weighing on my mind lately,” Simon replied, returning the smile and performing a small bow.

“It was still nice to have your presence here.”

“I would like to wish your congratulations again, on your marriage and child.”

“Thank you, Simon. I hope to one day attend your wedding.”

“I don’t have plans for marriage, just yet.”

“I still hope to attend one day. I wish you and your title all the best.”

“I’m not sure that my title will go on beyond me, Prim.”

“Why do you say that?”

“Titles and the king are regarded very differently in Ireland, Prim. There is a lot of discontent amongst the population and my own tenants. They’ve been discontent for centuries.”

“I have heard that. My friend, Niamh Kelly, has talked about that a little bit. But still, I wish you all the best for your future, Simon.”

“Farewell, Lady Harrendale,” Simon said, punctuating his goodbye with a bow. “Oh, and happy Christmas!”

“Happy Christmas to you too, Simon!”

Weekend with the Grays: The Winter Masquerade (December 9, 2023)

Simon spent most of the masquerade ball discussing politics with his fellows. He wasn’t interested in dancing all that much, except for the three dances that Prim coerced him into. He hadn’t been in much of a festive spirit. Simon had found himself being plagued with insecurities, especially related to his family’s death and the fact that he’d been born third.

Weekend with the Grays: Croquet in the Snow (December 7, 2023)

“Dear lord,” Simon yelped, barely jumping out of the way of the incoming croquet ball. 

His mallet landed with a soft thud in the snow. He cringed at the thought of the hard ball colliding into his foot. His boots were not nearly thick enough for the danger of croquet. Especially considering that Simon was a hemophiliac. He worried about the effects of a hard ball breaking his foot. He swore as another ball came his way.

“Simon! It’s your turn!” Prim called, directing his attention to his mallet and ball.

Simon sighed, but lined the mallet up with the ball the best he could. He had an odd stance, that was more hunched over than anything else as he kept his feet planted a few feet away from the ball in order to avoid slamming a foot with a mallet. He hit the ball with as much power as his awkward stance could muster. It veered dramatically off course, resulting in a mumbled swear.

Weekend with the Grays: Cocktail Party in the Gazebo (December 6, 2023)

Simon loitered in the corner of the gazebo, nursing a glass of Scottish whiskey as he watched the crowd. He recognized a handful of familiar faces. Adonis Demiurgos, also loitering in a corner. Vinnie Wakefield, his fellow former Hufflepuff, cheerfully engaging with numerous guests. He couldn’t quite place the other guests, which might have been due to the generous amount of whiskey that he’d indulged in that afternoon. It wasn’t enough to impair his judgment (at least, that’s how Simon felt), just enough to dull the sharp edges that had been haunting him since his emancipation from Horace Dormer’s guardianship.

“Has Prim told you the legend surrounding the upcoming solstice, Wexford?” Malcolm Stolberg-Burke’s voice startled Simon out of his daze.

“Ah, yes, I believe so. It’s odd to me. Celtic legend says the winter solstice was a battle between the Holly King of darkness and the Oak King of light. The Oak King won each winter and brought back light to the days,” Simon replied, his mind wandering back to the day that his father had told him and his brothers the story. 

“Interesting. That must be quite the rivalry that a battle occurs each year.”

“I imagine so. It appears to be more hopeful than Primrose’s interpretation.”

“Yes, but Prim is mostly worried due to an ancestor that met an untimely end after witnessing such a solstice that is foretold this year.”

“I cannot imagine that the universe could be much crueler to me than it already has.”

A silence fell after that, an uncomfortable reminder that Simon was never supposed to bear the title of Wexford. 

“How’s the whiskey?” Malcolm asked, after the beat.

“Good. I much prefer a good peat whiskey this time of year. It does taste like dirt more often than not, but it’s still damn good.”

Weekend with the Grays: The Welcome Ball III (Dec. 5, 2023)

The thing was Simon wasn’t quite interested in dancing. It was one of the lower risk activities, but he had two left feet and could rarely do anything other than sway. Besides, he had more important things on his mind… such as finding a way to regain the money that Dormer had lost so that the tenants could actually be paid for their goods. Maybe it was another sign that Simon should never have been the earl.

“You’re looking quite glum here in the corner, Wexford,” a familiar voice said and Simon looked up to see his hostess.

“Are you missing anyone in particular?” Primrose Gray asked, a slight twinkle in her eye.

“No, or well, no one who could be brought here, my lady,” Simon replied. “And anyways, I’m afraid I’d be a poor dance partner. I have two left feet.”

“Ah well, I’m sure someone would be happy to dance with you and please, call me Prim. We’ve known each other for quite awhile. Are you missing Nilüfer Sultan?”

“Not really.” Simon sighed. “I’ve worn this title for a little over a decade and it still feels like I’m an imposter. I was never supposed to wear the damn title, pardon my language. And I don’t know why I’m spilling this all to you.”

“There’s just something about me that makes people spill their guts to me, Simon. Do you mind me using your Christian name?”

“It’s fine, Prim. As you said, we’ve known each for quite a bit.” 

“I’ll find you a dance partner,” Prim said, walking away from Simon.

“You don’t have to!” Simon called, as she melted into the crowd.
