Hello! I'm reasonably new to Rawhide (just started Season 3). I know most people don't have many positives about Season 8. What are your thoughts? Are there any episodes you like?

I suppose Season 8 isn’t so much bad as different. The changes in the cast and overall tone just made it feel more like a different show than the Rawhide I know and love. It feels a bit harder and colder to me and with over half the cast cut it lacks the character interaction which had really made the show. 

Still there are some good things in Season 8. I like Simon Blake. Ian Cabot is intriguing because he seems so out of place I want to know more about him. And I’m warming up to Jed Colby. And Rowdy does a really good job of stepping up as a Trail Boss. 

I haven’t finished watching all of season 8 yet, but there’s a few episodes I quite like:

“Walk into Terror” is a great character driven episode that does a good job of blending the new character in with the old. 

“Hostage for Hanging” is another good character driven episode and also Rowdy whump heavy. 

“Duel at Daybreak” has Charles Bronson as a guest star so is a must see.

I am finally making my way through Season 8. And I’m doing my best to give it a fair shot. So I thought I’d make some commentary posts of the episodes.

Gonna start with Episode 4 “Walk Into Terror”.

Still not a fan of the illustrated opening titles. Good drawings but it just doesn’t have the same feel.

Quince and Simon are seeing how far a mine shaft runs, I think to check that the ground won’t cave in under the herd. Quince gets attacked by a bear. (AKA, the most obvious man in a bear suit ever. LOL) The tunnel caves in when Simon shoots the bear and now they’re trapped.

Ahhhhhh 1960s special effects.Ya tried. 

So everyone’s now trying to dig them out and Wishbone has a lamp that looks like it’s water powered or something. Whatever it is, it’s a cool gadget.

Anyone know what type of lamp they used? Love 1800s tech. 

I miss Gil so much. But I’m trying to be objective when I watch Jed.

I like the scenes with Wish telling Simon how to treat Quince’s injuries and telling stories through the air pipe to keep them awake.

I really miss the others, but I do like how Simon and Jed slot into the story. Really liking the dynamic with Simon, Wish and Quince. They look like they became fast friends and it makes the story feel more settled.

Rowdy, Jed and two newbies (who are totally up to no good) are trying to bring in some blasting gel to clear the mine. It reminds me a lot of “Incident of the Champagne Bottles” with them trying to push a cart with the explosives and trying not to get blown up.

Boss Rowdy is shaping up good. I do miss the Bambi eyed Ramrod, but he makes a good boss. He’s still got some of that same chaotic energy, but he’s getting more of that Eastwoodian gruffness. 

Not 100% sure how I feel about Jed yet. He seems alright, but I haven’t enough to get an idea of his personality yet.

All in all, a solid episode. Character interaction really makes it.

Alright, so tonight we have Season 8, Episode 2, “Ride a Crooked Mile”

LOL. Rowdy commenting about Jed picking up strays. Now you know what Gil delt with for so many years with you.  

Has Rowdy’s voice changed? It sounds deeper with more much more drawl. Reminds me of his voice in “Kelley’s Heroes”.

Rowdy; “Quince, do I look as dumb as I feel?” Quince; “Well…” Rowdy; “Don’t say it.”

Some of these lines are funny. 

Campsite scenes a really where the lack of the regular characters stands out the most.

Jed’s set on getting this new guys horse and Simon thinks he’s seen this guy before and it’s troubling him.  

Rowdy’s sarcasm level has been dialed up. Gil would be proud.

Snarky humour, worried about his men, worried about the herd. Well, Rowdy’s a fully grown up Trail Boss now. 

So the new guy, Danny, says he won his horse in a poker game. Now the original owner, Benson, has shown up with a gang claiming Danny cheated and he wants to hang Danny for a horse thief. Rowdy protected Danny and now Benson is poisoning the surrounding water holes.

I don’t know is this makes sense, but the show just feels different this season. There’s something missing in its energy, like it’s colder or emptier. I don’t feel as drawn into the story as I did with other seasons.

Rowdy’s been kidnaped and tied up. I guess some things never change.

Ok, Danny is fast-talking trouble and is messing with Jed’s head. Rowdy’s faster on the trigger though.

All this for a horse? It is a beautiful horse though.

Note; Rowdy still scratches at his face. Nice to know some quirks stay the same.

This ep was a bit slow, but has some good moments with the dialogue. Still not sure about Jed. He had some good interactions with the others but I still can’t get much of a read on him.

Well, I'm in season 8. I miss Gil. And Pete and Mushy and Jesus and Scarlet. Seriously, what dodo thought to cut the cast like that? It just doesn't feel right without half the crew.

Rowdy's doing good as the boss. Babydoll all growed up and being a badass. I miss the fluffy, adorkable Ramrod, but Trail Boss Yates does good.

I like Simon Blake. He's got a great screen presence. According to IMDB, Raymond St. Jacques was the first black actor to be regular on a western series.

Random English dude. Okay. Ian's cute. Nice accent. David Watson, same actor who played Cornelius in "Beneath the Planet of the Apes". I wonder if they added an English character for the same reason they added Chekov to Star Trek? Keep up with the rise in popularity with groups like the Beatles.

But what happened to the theme song??? No Frankie Laine??? Why'd they change the title music? "Beyond the Sun" is background music, not opening credits.
