DOSE AMSTRONG PALACE
Hi guys!
I am sharing the Dose Amstrong palace, a manor residence once located in the capital city of Argentina.
The palace is no longer with us, as it was demolished to build a multi-family edifice.
History: This house belonged to Dr. Carlos Dose's family and was located at the corner of Avenida Alvear and Ayacucho Street.
It was built by architects Jacques Dunant and Charles Paquín, the former also being the author of the Huetel estate, the Mercedes Cathedral, and the Carlos Malbrán Pavilion of the Bacteriological Institute of the City of Buenos Aires.
For more information on Dunant’s works, we recommend visiting the site of researcher Alejandro Machado: arquitectos-franceses-argentina.blogspot.com.ar.
The house, completed around 1890, was one of the first "grand residences" on Avenida Alvear. A magazine published in the 1920s described it as follows:
"One of the architectural beauties that adorn our city is the mansion of Mr. Alfredo Zemborain and his wife, Mrs. Justa Dose. It is a faithful small-scale replica of the Palace of Francis I, located a few kilometers from Paris. The interior design, of indisputable good taste, harmonizes with the construction of the house, as everything follows the French style. Furniture, paintings, silverware, bronzes, marble, and carved wood—all reveal art and wealth. The gardens provide a cheerful note, with their abundant trees, and the magnificence of the flowers gives the palace the beauty of every season."
However, the social magazines of the time, which did not specialize in architecture, were often full of inaccuracies, so they cannot be taken as a reliable source: the Dose family house was not a replica of a palace of Francis I, nor was everything about it French. The façades were inspired by the Louis XIII style, corresponding to the transition between the Renaissance and French Baroque, which, in one of its periods, is characterized by the combination and contrast of brick and stone on the façades.
