September 1977. 'The Genie portable machine does so much to make sewing easy that it definitely classifies as a heavyweight.'
The Finished Project!
Hey everyone! I don’t know if any of you remember this project (what with the extremely sparse updates over a THREE YEAR period, gosh I can’t believe this took three years) but it’s finally done!!!
The Story:
So my uncle was helping someone to clean out their back yard and came across this old treadle singer sewing machine stand. The thing had been outside for years, as evidenced by the woody vine growing up the side that had to be cut off. Well I love these darn things and asked my dad if we could restore it, and boy did we. After taking about a week to very gently disassemble the thing as it was very rusted and we didn’t want to break anything, we got it sand blasted to remove the rust and old paint. We painted it all pretty and added gold accents over the singer logos. I was especially happy that we were able to preserve what was left of the vine.
It was broken in a few places so we had to order a new wheel and figure out a way to deal with the broken bracket. My dad and I made a little peg to go over it and then forged a custom bracket to screw into the top. We spent an entire summer just testing different stains and finishes.... I was... so tired of finishes. The top was based off of the vintage top to another sewing machine desk (found in a friends attic this time) and had to be custom made which took a good while as well because we were so scared that we’d mess it up.
However, in the end we found a gorgeous, working machine to top it all off and assembled it. I can’t believe we finished it. My dad is the best and was willing to brave trying out a forge for the first time for me. I’m glad we finally finished it, but I also enjoyed working on it with him so much.
TL;DR: My dad’s the best, he and I took three years to restore this, and I’m very proud of it

I ❤️ vintage Singer.
Time to go back and post all the projects I finished while my blog wasn’t visible to the public— He’s not perfect, but he still might be my favorite project from 2017. I made this for my 3-year-old nephew for Christmas(though my sister says everyone in the family has ended up taking a nap on it at some point, which is HILARIOUS because I totally took an accidental nap on it when I was working on it really late one night. It makes a fantastic pillow). I mailed it across the country in a box made for shipping golf clubs, and my sister sent me a video of my nephew opening it & yelling, “It’s a shark!” and I cried some good, happy tears. Now, I just have to figure out how to top this next Christmas.
Using my new walking foot my grandma gave to me! I used it to attach my front bodice pieces together because I doubled up the fabric. The walking foot makes attaching them a breeze because it feeds this super stretchy fabric evenly!
A Cherry Sewing Kit
This isn't 100% doll related, but I wanted to show you guys the cherries I painted on my sewing kit! It's so fun to personalize the things you use everyday and make them something you actually enjoy looking at
