Coordinated Coexistence
As a drum set player my goal is to be able to play my multi instrumental grooves with as much feeling a possible. The limbs need to coordinate together to make a pleasing complete sound. And yet the rudiments, in all their linear glory, are still hugely benefitial to study and practice. This is the beautiful contradiction.
The single stroke rudiment is the foundation on which drumming is built. That and the ability to play even notes with each hand. Which isn't technically a rudimentary but you can't play a good single stroke roll without being able to play "Eight on a hand", as the exercise is called. And if you can't play even notes on each hand you can't play a killer rock groove. Or much else for that matter.
1200BPM Single Strokes! An update on my progress. I've been trying to break the world record for fast single strokes which currently stands at 1208 notes in 60 seconds. As you can see, this is the absolute end of my ability and it's not exactly comfortable or accurate. But, since reaching this speed for the first time a few months ago, it's starting to become comfortable at last! The metronome is set to 300BPM and I'm playing 16th notes over it. 300 x 4 = 1200! I'm going to wait until I can confidently and comfortably break the record before I make an official attempt. It's not going to happen over night and I haven't exactly had as much time to work on this as I would like. Cool exercise for single strokes around the kit. I'm playing 3 notes on the snare and floor tom but 2 notes on the rack toms.
