A singleton is a planet posited in the only sign or house of its type (element, mode, or orientation). For example, if your sun is the only planet in a water house, or if your moon is the only planet in a sign of universal orientation, those would be singletons. Singletons are quite powerful forces in the birth chart; they can be considered focal points of consciousness, sometimes vehicles of manifestation for other astrological forces. They are widely understood to have extreme expressions (or repressions) which are heavily thematic or symbolic. Due to the highly charged nature of having a singleton, there can be much chaotic fluctuation and instability; the most difficult but most necessary challenge is achieving balance. One is rarely unaware of their singleton(s) because of the immense energy & influence they possess. A singleton easily stands out as one of the most important planets in a person’s natal chart.
To find your singleton(s), simply count:

- how many planets are in a cardinal, fixed, or mutable sign
- how many planets are in a personal, social, or universal sign
- how many planets are in a masculine or feminine sign

Because of the nature of the houses (their various calculations & applications), singletons by sign are much more potent and apparent (i.e. the only planet in a water sign will be more powerful than the only planet in a water house).
The house a singleton is posited in represents where its will is intended or most comfortably carried out, and the sign represents how.
If you have multiple singletons, their midpoints can be useful in discerning their relationship to each other, and the sign the midpoint is posited in will have increased strength or importance (especially if it is at a critical degree). Any aspects which activate the midpoint are tied into the “will” and developmental purpose that the singletons possess.
