I’m not sure when the change over happened or why, but I assume it’s because “singlet” just rolls off the tongue better. I imagine “median system” replaced “midcontinuum system” for similar reasons."
I don't have any proof, but I find it likely it could also be because "singleton" sounds similar to "simpleton" (i.e. an insult) and so "singlet" was created as an alternative way to refer to someone without headmates... But that's just speculation on my part lol.
That explanation makes a lot of sense! I'm still skeptical because I feel like if this was the case, I probably would have heard it talked about, but it would make sense!
