Which might’ve made that malice rise up to begin with... Might’ve made his eyes darken and his hands cruel in the way they toyed near a slender shoulder but failed to TOUCH. Just out of reach.

But not for long.

“Why so wilted, Sunflower?” Teasing. Harmless, in and of itself, were she not as smart as he knew to give her credit for. Summer with her wherewithal to keep distance. Unanswered texts and calls sent to voicemail, Seth knew the meaning of being snubbed. Humored it, even. Took an obscene gratification in watching her trail off down halls, out of sight, upon his entrance. And for what? To end up there, right back where she started. Right back where she belonged, with HIM.

“If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you were disappointed.” There it was. Palm calling flush over the slope of a tanned shoulder, smoothing downward, then back up, repeating the motion half a dozen times more before squeezing a gracious grip into place. “You and I both know you ended up where you should’ve been all along.”

              It might’ve been clipped… maybe. Whether Summer’d chosen now to find sincerity or was taking the piss at his expense, Seth opted not to budge. Sat on a sofa he’d tried to corral her onto as well, thumb drawing tight circles over a knee that ached regardless all efforts to appease it. Could’ve been worse. Could’ve been a lot of things. “I just need one of them.” A gesture for the freezer and gel packs waiting inside, “you know I can do it MYSELF now, right?” Prodding for whatever nerves might’ve been driving her… evidence that good intentions always came at a price.
