Today’s Movie Music is SIRBA by Vladimir Cosma, from Le grand blond avec une chaussure noire soundtrack (1972).

Although the movie is one classic French comedy, with one classic French actor (Pierre Richard), the music is anything but French. Even the name of the piece, SIRBA, comes from a traditional Romanian dance. But its fast and happy rhythm goes well with the movie.

The composer, Vladimir Cosma, was born in Romania in 1940. After studying music in Bucharest, he comes to Paris in 1963. He becomes interested in jazz and movie music. In 1968, he starts composing for French movies mostly, as well as for TV and even animation (like the music for this most amazing piece of French animation). He’s also written music for orchestra and operas. He’s still working to this day, at 75.

In SIRBA, you can hear Gheorghe Zamfir playing pan flute. Also Romanian, Zamfir is one of the most influential pan flute players in the world. He’s worked on other movie soundtracks, like Picnic at Hanging Rock, Once upon a time in America or Kill Bill.
