Badass Mythical Women and Creatures → Sirin
In Russian folklore, the Sirin is a creature with the head of a woman and a bird-like body. They are very much based on the Greek mythological creatures, the Sirens and Harpies. They often wore crowns or had a nimbus. They mostly had owl-like bodies, and other birds were rare in their species.
In earlier descriptions, Sirins were seen as bad omens to everyone except Saints, who would be told of future joys through song. Other mortals would be entranced by the Sirin, follow them, and ultimately perish. In vain, the mortals would ring bells and shoot cannons to scare away the birds and save themselves. It rarely worked. Later on, Sirins began to represent harmony and the belief that only those truly happy could hear a Sirin arose. This was because of their location on the “Indian Islands”, which was nearly touching Paradise.
you know what is a much cooler idea than beautiful sirens? horrifying siren!
think of it the hero looks out towards the source of the enchanting music and instead of seeing a beautiful woman he sees a creature with a scaly face, no nose, a lipless mouth full of irregular needle sharp teeth, massive clawed wings like a pterodactyl or a bats strumming a harp made of animal tendons and teeth, instead of legs it has a tail, but not the sleek fish tail of a mermaid, no, the strange fatty tail of an eel, where her skin is not covered in oily scales, ‘her’ it is gaunt and looks rotten. but through all of this he can not look away, because her song thrums in his chest.
growing up, I was a huge fan of mythology and folklore, and I remember reading somewhere that sirins were half woman-half bird and they looked like this
but I would always draw them like this
well I'm not an artist but you know what I mean
I want to be a siren - a beautiful mermaid who looks like a woman, but whose irresistible songs lures sailors to their deaths.
May I just point out that a siren took the form of a man for Dean? Sirins, you know, the things that turn into whatever appeals to you? And Dean's turned into a guy....
