25 March 2015
To everyone in the One Direction fandom, March 25th 2015 is the date that Zayn left One Direction. For me, it’s also the last day I had any contact with my baby brother. One Direction was our thing. And it’s apt that the last contact we had was sending messages regarding our mutual disappointment about Zayn leaving One Direction. Last communication, that is, until tonight.
My baby brother was born when I was 13 years old. Despite our age difference, we were always really close. I was basically a mom to him. I went to all his baseball games, school plays, everything. I helped him with his homework and school projects. I did everything for him. He was my world. Then a couple days before Christmas in 2015, my world shattered. My step dad and mom moved to another state and took my brother with him. They let me talk to him once on the phone since they left. They didn’t like me because I tried to get my mom help. She’s an addict and she needed rehab. My step dad enabled her addiction. They punished me by taking the most important human away from me.
One of my biggest regrets over the last few years was taking a nap on March 25 2015. I took a nap and I missed his Skype call. That was the last time he was allowed to reach out to me and I missed it.
Tonight I heard his voice and it was the most beautiful sound I’ve ever heard. He’s grown up since I’ve seen him last. He’s 12 now. His voice is already starting to get deeper, but it’s still my baby brother. I can’t believe I’ve missed these two years of his life. I have so many questions. What is he in to now? Does he still call it football, not soccer? Does he still love to read? Does he still love music? What about our lads? Does he still love them? Has he heard H’s album or L’s singles? Is Harry still his favourite? Does he still have Louis hair? Does he still want to name his kids Hazza, Lou, and Niall? I want to know all these things and I hope that this two minute call will be the start of getting to know my human again.
