On Tuesday morning, I got up early to go vote. I knew that if I didn't go before work then I would have a long wait. I had a bit of trouble, but I cast my vote for Hillary Rodham Clinton. When I left my polling station, I was so emotional. It was so empowering being able to vote for a woman to be president. On Tuesday night, I sat in my living room with my staunch Republican family and watched the votes roll in. As they celebrated, I became more and more dejected. My candidate wasn't going to win. This didn't compute with me. I never thought my country would elect Donald Trump. I thought my country was better than that. I never thought my country would elect a man, who spews such hatred. But I was wrong. On Wednesday morning, I woke up hoping it was just a dream. Obviously, it wasn't. This is our reality. Donald Trump will be our President. I felt such sadness because of this. I cried many times throughout the day yesterday. I cried for myself. I cried for my friends, who will be affected by Trump's racism, homophobia, xenophobia, sexism, etc. I cried for Hillary Clinton, who has worked so hard for so many years and lost to an unqualified man. I cried for what could've been if Clinton had been elected. I cried because I feel like we (meaning America as a whole) have failed so many people by electing Donald Trump. We failed the LGBTQ+ community. We elected someone who doesn't support same sex marriage and could appoint judges to the Supreme Court that may overturn the case that made Same sex marriage legal. This is not okay. By electing him, we are telling our LGBTQ+ friends and family members that we don't believe that they should have the same rights as straight people do. We are creating an unsafe environment. This is wrong. We failed the immigrant population. We elected someone who wants to build a wall and will have deportation forces. This is not okay. By electing him, we are telling immigrants that we do not want them in this country. We are telling them that they're not welcome here. We are creating an unsafe environment. This is wrong. We failed our Latino population. He has called Latino immigrants rapists, criminals, and killers. He asked that an American born Mexican judge be removed from a case because he didn't believe that the judge could be fair because he is Mexican. This is not okay. By electing him, we are telling the Latino community that we agree with him. We are condoning his racism. We are creating an unsafe environment. This is wrong. We have failed our African American population. We elected someone who has refused to rent to African Americans in the past. Someone who supports "stop and frisk", which is a form of racial profiling. Someone who believes we need "more law and order." He doesn't believe we have a problem with our police officers. This is not okay. By electing him, we are telling our African American community that we support discrimination and racial profiling. We are creating an unsafe environment. This is wrong. We have failed our Muslim population. We elected someone who has demonized the Muslim community. He will not allow anyone, who identifies as Muslim, into our country. This is not okay. By electing him, we are telling our Muslim community that we agree with him. We are creating an unsafe environment. This is wrong. We have failed our women and little girls. We elected someone whose comments perpetuate rape culture. Someone who treats women as objects there for his pleasure. Someone who has been accused of sexual misconduct multiple times. Someone who sees women as inferior. This is not okay. By electing him, we are telling our women (and our little girls) that they are inferior. We are telling them that even the world's most powerful man can rape you and it doesn't matter. We are creating an unsafe environment. This is wrong. We have even failed our little boys and teenage boys. By electing him, we are teaching our boys that women are there for their consumption. We are telling them that they are superior. We are telling them that even if they rape someone, there will be no consequences. This is wrong. And Millennials, we failed each other by not uniting behind Hillary Clinton. The Bernie or Bust people. The third party protest votes people. The people who refused to vote. The 11,000+ people who voted for the dead gorilla. We failed. We had the chance to elect a woman who has fought for us for her entire adult life. She had her issues, but she was the most qualified person to ever seek the office of the presidency. She lost to a man who was highly unqualified and unfit to be President. This is wrong. My only hope is that we will use this as a rallying call. We have to start fighting for what is right. We have to stand up for ourselves and for our rights. Donald Trump is going to try to take them from us, but we cannot allow him to do that. We must not be silent. We must fight against him. We must show him that we are here and we will not allow him to turn our country into one filled with hate. We must spread love and acceptance and inclusiveness. If we work together, we will change the world. I know it's sad right now and the future looks bleak. It's okay to be sad. Work through that sadness and then begin to fight. There is so much work to be done.
