Today we celebrate the Venerable Sisoes the Great. Saint Sisoes excelled in asceticism in the cave where Saint Anthony the Great dwelt, and was soon granted the divine gift of wonderworking. In this icon, the ascetic is shown before the bones of Alexander the Great, lamenting the vanity of this world and fearing the righteous judgment of God. When Saint Sisoes was on his deathbed, his face shone like the sun and he saw the saints and angels around him. He was seen talking to someone and when asked with whom he was conversing, he stated that he was asking the angles for more time to repent. His monks said that he had no need for repentance but he argued that he had barely begun to repent, so great was his humility. When he deposed, his face shone so bright that the monks were unable to look at him and a heavenly fragrance evaded the room.
