You had always leaned towards the tomboy side compared to other girls, it was kind of written out for you to be, growing up around men. The only girly thing you can remember from childhood was having one single barbie doll that Dean had bought from the dollar store. Other than that, it was always matchbox cars and plastic dinosaurs.
When high school started, you did however become interested in some makeup and skincare. Not just because of the trends, but because it was the one thing that set you apart from your brothers. Everything else that formed your sole being was pretty much tied to Sam and Dean. The way you dressed, your language, your interests...
It felt nice having one enjoyable girly thing. To feel done up and pretty with some makeup during the day, a nice touch on top of your flannel and jeans. And to feel a fresh and clean face at the end of the day.
It was always hilarious seeing your brothers faces if they'd happen to walk into your room in the middle of you doing gua sha. Or to stroll past you in the hall with your skin covered in a blue face mask. There was usually a brief explanation to follow their confusion.
You stood in front of the bathroom mirror applying your pink under eye masks, the rejuvenating ones. You reveled in the satisfaction the cooling sensation gave to your skin. Just then Sam came by and stopped in the doorway, tilting his head.
"Hmm." His brows creased.
"Hmm, what?" You asked, head tilted upwards.
"Why you got eye patches on?" He motioned curiously.
You huffed in amusement. "They're not eye patches, it's under eye masks."
"Isn't that the same thing?" Sam now fell confused.
"No, cus don't eye patches go over your eyes... These are for the skin under your eyes, cus it's thin and sensitive." You clued.
"O...kay, so what do they do."
"...is there something I can help you with?" You wondered as he lingered.
"I came to ask you something, but now I can't remember." He sighed.
"Well, these ones are rejuvenating. I have a whole pack of other ones though. You... wanna try?" You gestured, expecting him to laugh and turn the other cheek.
Sam stood there for a minute contemplating. "Sure." He blurted out, stepping beside you in front of the mirror.
Surprised, you excitedly showed him the range of colors. "Okay, so the gold ones are illuminating, blue are moisturizing, pink is rejuvenating, and green ones are revitalizing. I have yet to try them all, but which ones do you want?" You fanned out the packages.
"Uh, which ones do you think I need...?" Sam's eyes glared at them all.
"I'll give you the gold, you could use a boost to those dark circles." You began to unwrap the foil.
"What-?"
"Hey, you asked for my opinion." You laughed. Sam placed and smoothed the jelly patches onto his skin, looking in the mirror with a flat expression.
"So, this is another one of your beauty regimens, huh?"
You nodded.
"Is this like, the eye equivalent to those patches you put over your nose?"
"Sort of, but those are pore strips so they take stuff off. These do not." You explained as you began dotting moisturizer onto your chin.
"I don't get it." He sighed.
"You don't have to- wait, feel my forehead." You pulled Sam's wrist up.
"What, are you sick?" He turned to face you.
"No, feel the smoothness." You fixed his hand. "Oh- ohh. Pretty soft, yeah."
"And that is why I do it." You smiled.
"Gotcha. Sooo... how long do I have to leave these on for?" Sam pointed to his shiny gold masks.
"15 minutes."
He let out a breath of air, then Dean walked by. Stopping and backing up when he saw two figures in the small powder room.
His face curled in bewilderment when he caught sight of Sam. "What's this?"
"Oh. Illuminating eye masks." He said with a straight face.
Dean raised his eyebrows before walking away. "I shouldn't have asked."
Sam turned around at the sound of you laughing. "C'mon, y/n"
"Whaat? You're honestly pretty cool for doing this." You smiled, peeling your masks off.
Sam smiled to himself. "Jokes on Dean, he won't be achieving an illuminated, glowy look tonight." You both laughed.
@encounterthepast: How Dean and Sam react to being given a proper Christmas.
Sam: 10
Dean: 14
Older Sister: 20
Characters: Bobby, YN (older sister), Dean, Sam, and mentions of John
Warning: Mean Dean, Dean’s a Scrooge, Bobby’s discipline (I guess?)
Words: 600
“Let’s go! It’s freezing, and I have a surprise for you.” YN wiped her feet on the rug right inside Bobby’s house.
Sam stopped, Dean running into him.
A Christmas tree. And lights. Ornaments.
The Winchester sister turned to look at the boys’ reaction to her hard work. Sam froze with his mouth open in shock. Dean rolled his eyes.
I just wanted to give them an actual Christmas. Not good enough for Dean. Again.
“It’s perfect, YN!” Sam ran into her arms.
“Sure, Sam. Glad you like it.”
Dean shoulder-checked Sam, almost knocking him and their older sister over as he carried his backpack up the stairs.
“What’s wrong with Dee?”
“He’s being a Scrooge today. It’s okay. Look, I got you something.” YN moved out of the way so that he could see the gifts under the tree. There was one with a big ‘S’ on the front. He reached for it and ripped it open.
“The whole series of Chronicles of Narnia?” Sam gasped. “Thank you, sissy!”
“You’re welcome, Sammy.” She kissed the top of his head.
——————
“You made my house look like Santa’s workshop!” Bobby groaned as he came home after a hunt.
“Don’t be a grinch, Uncle Bobby. I did it for them,” YN smiled, knowing he wasn’t actually mad. “They need a Christmas. Dad’s not here. We can celebrate without his negative attitude toward it. You should have seen Sam’s face. Totally worth it.”
“And Dean?” Bobby cocker an eyebrow.
“Not thrilled.” I answered. “It’s not Dad’s way. He doesn’t like it.”
“Yeah, well, he’s being a brat.” Bobby sighed. “BOY! Get your butt down here!”
“Bobby, don’t. I’ll talk to him late-“
Dean and Sam barreled down the stairs with guilty looks on their faces, knowing the oldest hunter was mad about something.
“Not you, Sam. Get upstairs,” Bobby shooed him away. Dean looked at the floor. “You PMSing, boy?”
“What?” Dean’s head shot up. “No!” He replied with attitude.
“Then why in the Sam Hill are you being rude to your sister? I won’t tolerate it in my house. Outside, now. Get your jacket on and grab the axe. I need some firewood.”
“What?” Dean’s jaw dropped.
“Come back in when you appreciate what people do for you.”
“I didn’t do anything!”
“I’m trying to make up for Dad, and everything you respond with is rude!” YN yelled back. “No matter what I do, it’s not good enough. You don’t want a Christmas? Fine, but don’t you dare ruin it for your brother.”
“Ugh!” Dean growled, grabbed his jacket off the hook, and he stomped out into the cold winter South Dakota weather.
“He’s-“
“A rascal,” Bobby chuckled. “Yeah.”
———-
You done being an ass?” YN walked out onto the porch. Dean looked up from the piece of wood he was about to chop it in half, cheeks pink in color.
“Dad’s not here, I get it. He didn’t celebrate Christmas, I get that too. But I wanted you guys to have a NORMAL Christmas. You always wanted one. Now you act like a butt? Really?”
“Just because you make it cutesy doesn’t mean I should be happy,” Dean breathed heavily.
“You’re right. But it also means you don’t get to be disrespectful. Finish that pile and you can come inside,” YN turned toward the door.
“I’m sorry,” Dean apologized.
“Keep going, Dean,” she said plainly and entered the house. Dean huffed and threw the axe in the air to continue.

"See, I just don't get how that's supposed to work." Dean threw his hands up.
"Do you need me to explain it again?" Sam huffed.
"....No." Dean's eyes avoided his brothers.
You came out of the corridor, casually walking past your brothers who were sat at the war room table. They saw you but were too wrapped up in their almost argument of a conversation. It was about a hunt they were working on, what else was new?
"Look, all I'm saying is if we ambush them that way, it could catch them off guard and-" Sam tried to continue.
"Yeah, key word 'could' Sam... real convincing." Dean struck with extra snark on that last part.
Sam sighed and looked past Dean, finally noticing you fidgeting with your shoes in the distant room. "Hey kiddo." He breathed out. Dean did a double take, glancing back at you.
"Hey." You barely acknowledged, as you finished tying your sneakers.
"There's a close hunt we're gonna go check out, did you wanna tag along" Sam asked in a hopeful tone.
"To sit in the backseat the whole time? No thanks." You turned back.
You were 15 years old, but weren't allowed to hunt. Your brothers had only taught you how to use a gun and some self defense skills, that was about it. Being that it was so difficult to fit into your normal side of life (school) you tried to pry for the longest time to go hunting, in hopes that was where you could fit in. Sam and Dean would not budge, it was always the same answer- 'when we feel your ready' which seemed like a bunch of bullshit at this point. You weren't sure you'd ever actually get to hunt, unless you snuck behind their back which you knew would get you into trouble. You hated it, but you knew you didn't have experience.
Lately, your life felt like such a colossal mess, and the thought of hunting began to feel less and less interesting in your mind. So, you stopped asking, realizing it probably won't ever happen.
"You sure? You don't want-"
"It's alright, I'm going for a run." You didn't let Sam finish, passing by the both of them and retreating out of the bunker.
"Be safe!" Sam yelled out right before the door slammed shut."
A short silence fell briefly among the room. "Kinda weird how she hasn't asked- begged practically to come on hunts lately." Sam stated.
"Beats her buggin' us about it." Dean was short, going right back to packing a duffel with supplies.
Sam dropped it and resumed reciting his plan.
~
A couple weeks went by, just the usual agenda for the Winchester brothers. Hunt after hunt, seeking leads, heavy on research, making a go for it, and repeat. That's always been the job, that's how you watched your brothers growing up, even when John was still around.
For you it was school, terrible as always, coming home and pressing Sam and Dean to be apart of whatever it was they were working on. And not research, that was the only thing they'd let you do but you would still try and beg to do anything else.
Not these days, instead it was school, come home, and... well, you didn't really know what else to do. You just started to avoid them both a little bit, self isolate and attempt to pre-occupy yourself with whatever you could.
You were reluctantly working on homework in the library when Sam and Dean flooded into the room, each with a stack of files in their grip.
"If there's not something in here, we're gonna have to go to plan b." Dean set down his pile of file folders on the table across from you.
"Yeah, and what's that." Sam asked a bit annoyed.
"I'm gonna have to figure that out, info on this is already pretty slim." Dean ran a hand through his hair, relieving some stress before pulling out a chair.
You closed your book and started packing up your stuff. "Y/n, you don't have to leave." Dean looked at you, slightly confused.
"It's okay, I gotta focus, I'll just go to my room." You retreated but were stopped by Dean, grasping for your arm.
"Hey... what's goin' on with you?"
"Nothing. Okay." You avoided, turning around but Dean wouldn't let up.
"Seriously, what's with all the moping... What did we do this time?" He scorned ever so quickly as he gripped your shoulder, trying to turn you around again.
"Nothing, Dean. Can you just stop! I need to finish this." You pulled back harder, rushing out of the room before they could say anything else.
"What in the world..." Sam whispered. "What's up with her?" He spoke up once you were far enough.
"I don't know, teenage stuff?" Dean shrugged his shoulders, cringing faintly.
Sam thought about leaving it alone but couldn't shake your weird behavior recently. "I'll go try." He said as he headed towards your room.
"Good luck with that." Dean pointed your direction.
Sam stepped with caution into your door frame, curling a fist to knock on it. "Can I come in?" He scrunched his face, anticipating an unpleasant reaction.
"Yeah, I guess." You rolled your eyes. Great, here comes Sam trying to figure out 'what's wrong with me' type of talk. He sat on the edge of your bed, across from where you were at your desk.
"Dean's just trying to help, make sure you're okay n' all." He spoke softly.
"I said I'm fine, Sam." You kept your focus on the paper in front of you.
"You have been kind of distant though, is there something we did to upset you?" He asked.
You dropped your pen and swiveled around on your chair. "Sam, you and Dean did nothing wrong. I am fine, can you just drop it... school is just annoying right now and I'm trying to get this done." You faked an excuse, itching for him to leave.
"Well, if it's anything I can help with-"
"Sam! I can handle it, I don't feel like doing this with you right now. Get out." You could feel your inner wall beginning to break.
"Y/n/n, relax, I just wa-"
"I don't care, get out!! Now!" You stood up, pushing Sam to do the same and inching him towards the door. You shut the door, not too hard though in slight fear that it would piss Dean off into coming over here.
Sam stood in front of the closed door, confused and a bit shocked. He went back to the library, shoulders slumped in defeat.
"That sounded good." sarcasm filled Dean's voice.
Sam's sated eyes met his. "I dunno, we'll figure it out. Anyways, let's get back to finding this..." His attention went to the files.
~
It was another late night of you waiting up for your brothers again. Even if you got word the hunt was successful, you couldn't ever fall asleep until you saw them come back. It was a long drive this time around, you became restless and decided to go sit outside and look at the sky.
You stared up at each of the individual twinkling dots, taking a deep breath and felt a little bit of release from all the tension you've been holding deep inside. It was not often you shared your thoughts and feelings to your brothers, despite you being an emotional teenage girl. That's just how you operated, like them. Neither of them are the type to talk about how they feel, and give advice or solutions to. It's never been that way, the men in your life you grew up with always took the 'suck it up' approach. You had to be tough, even though they'd remind you to come to them if you ever needed to. You just couldn't, you always mirrored their tough front and told yourself to appear strong. You couldn't afford to be weak in this life, even if it was a life you were barely apart of.
Stuck in your deep thoughts, you didn't hear the rumble of the impala on the other side of the brick building.
"Y/n! We're back." Dean announced, coming down the bunker stairs. You weren't at all very responsive these past weeks. Sam and Dean shared an affirming look. Dean walked away to your room, planning to pop in to say 'goodnight' and 'hunt went well' type of stuff.
Sam began unpacking their things on the war room table when he heard abrupt footsteps coming back his way.
"She's not in her room." He stood there questioning.
Sam proposed logic before introducing panic as an option "She could be somewhere else in the bunker... like the bathroom or something." He turned back to Dean's duffel as Dean left the room again, coming back minutes later with added distress.
"I can't find her." Dean patted his pockets for his cellphone. "Where is the damn thing." he stomped up to Sam, nudging him aside as he searched the bag. "Call her, now." He firmly ordered.
Sam felt his pockets, seeing his were empty as well. "My phone's in the car." He began walking with a swift pace. Sam exited the garage to the car which was parked in the gravel outside the door. He stopped when he almost crashed into you.
"Y/n? What the hell! You scared us."
"Sorry?" You backed up, confused at the sudden disturbance.
Sam released the breath he was holding in. "Where were you?"
"Sitting out here, just needed to get some air." Your eyes barely met his as you attempted to push past him. Sam stood in front of the door, forcing you to look up at him.
"What are you doing? I'd like to go to bed now..."
Silence followed, Sam studied your body language before speaking up. "What's wrong, y/n. Why haven't you been talking to us much?"
You stopped, circling around and letting your head fall back in frustration. You weren't getting out of this one. You walked a few steps over to the brick wall of the bunker and let your back thud against it. Sam followed you with those curious puppy eyes of his.
"That's just how we do things. We keep... feelings and stuff to ourselves. Nevermind bothering you guys about it." You shrugged.
"What do you mean? You can always come to either of us if-"
"Something's bothering me, yeah, I know." You finished his sentence.
"Okay, so why don't you?" Sam crossed his arms, matching your lean on the outside structure.
"Cause, I can't be weak I guess." You said quietly.
"Bug, feelings don't make you weak. You can't help that." Sam reassured.
"You guys never show yours though, you always say to 'suck it up'. I- I just... never mind."
"No, what? Tell me, sweetheart." It wasn't often Sam or Dean called you that, and somehow you knew that was your queue to spill it.
"I just feel like... I don't know if you guys would take me seriously, if I'm... spilling out my feelings? I don't know, it sounds stupid. It probably is stupid." Your gaze fell to your fidgeting hands.
Sam stifled a chuckle. "It's not stupid to tell us how you feel. I know we don't do it often, but it doesn't mean that you can't."
Just then, the door burst open with a stumbling Dean looking at the empty car, then aimlessly looking around for Sam when he spotted us.
"What the- what's going on?" He asked, catching his breath as he walked over.
"She was just outside the bunker." Sam gestured.
"You trying to scare us, kid?" Dean half joked.
"No..." You started.
"But, now seems like a good time to talk about what's been up with you. All the distant attitude n' what not." Sam raised his eyebrows at you.
"Wha- I can't!" You whined, beginning to pace in annoyance.
"Y/n, we're your brothers. You can tell us anything, floor's open." He motioned at you.
"Ugh.. I don't know how to put it." You stopped, shoving your hands in your back pockets, eager to put your mind at ease. "I have no plan."
Both brothers furrowed their brows in confusion. "Huh?" Dean questioned.
"I have no plan, no purpose. I don't know what I'm supposed to do with myself. My future is blank, literally." You stated, looking back at your confused brothers. "I don't really, fit in I guess you'd say. Not at school, not with people my own age. I don't even fit in to what our family does, mainly cause I'm not even allowed to do it! So, why am I here? To sit around and watch each day go by. I'm useless."
"Sweetheart, you are not useless." Dean reached out a hand, placing it on your shoulder."Yeah, then what am I?" You challenged, looking up at him.
"You're the most important person in our lives. Now, I don't care if the snot nosed kids at school don't think so, but you're the level headed, intuitive, pretty awesome glue that holds us all together." Dean explained.
"So I'm just glue?"
He looked at you blankly. "You know what I mean."
"He's right, y/n. Nothing would be the same without you. I understand school can make you feel that extra pressure. Aside from that, you're an important part of this family, whether you hunt or not." Sam gave you a small smile.
"I know, it doesn't feel the same though. I feel like I'm off to the side, existing for no reason." You caved on yourself. "Whatever, I told you it was stupid."
"It is not. You know why we can't risk you coming hunting with us right now. We also want you to have a chance at what we didn't have. And, that's a normal life." Sam explained.
"Either way, I'm not normal. I'm related to you two." You pointed out.
"Wow, thanks." Dean reacted fake insulted, making you smile a little.
"In the best ways, of course." You smiled genuinely.
"Nice save, kiddo." Dean smiled back, slowly coming over and pulling you into a side hug.
"Come on, we need you more than ever. Can't have you becoming a rogue teenager on us." Dean squeezed you into his size.
"Kay, okay, I get it." You pushed away playfully. "I won't be so closed off!"
"Please?" Sam checked.
"Yes, sorry." You let your arms fall to your side.
"No need to apologize. We just want to make sure you're okay, always. That's why we're here." Sam opened his arms, inviting you into a hug which you accepted.
The three of you walked back to the bunker. "Big tough hunters can show their emotions too y'know..." You hinted.
"Not a chance, I'm not falling into any chick flick moments." Dean said over his shoulder.
"Don't be so rigid, Dean!" You called out.
"Nope!" He confirmed. You and Sam both shook your heads.
summary: Sam & Dean's little sister runs away, they have to find her and figure out why.
The clock read 3:50 am, the sky was dark with a subtle glow radiating from the moon, which highlighted the outlines of the clouds scattered about.
This was it, this was your day. You were running away.
The air felt crisp on this early Tuesday morning. You hated Tuesdays, something about them following a dreadful Monday, but not quite close to the end of the week yet. Maybe you could run away from Tuesdays while you were at it.
You'd been planning this for a bit, hasn't been long though- partially planned, partially on impulse. You weren't sure why you wanted to run away, you just know that you did. You were 16 years old, middle of high school. For most girls, this was such an exciting time in their lives- going to prom, getting their license, hoping to get asked out on dates, friends... For you, it never felt like that.
Of course, it was the fact that you were raised in the hunting life. Your upbringing was anything but normal, losing both parents at such a young age and having been raised by your older brothers. Despite your tough circumstances, you'd like to think you had it decent. You always tried to see the good among the bad, and be grateful. Sam and Dean always did their best to make sure you had everything you needed- clothes, food, shelter, schooling, free time, and protection most of all. Besides these things, you never felt quite right. As much as you went to your brothers for a lot of things, sometimes you just thought they wouldn't understand. You felt suffocated by everything lately, and you just wanted to get out.
You knew both Sam or Dean were light sleepers, and they'd jerk awake at any sudden sound or movement. So you waited a while, waited for a night that was an excuse to celebrate, an excuse for celebratory drinks. The boys had just put a stop to a string of long connecting hunts, it felt never ending until now. They hit the bar that evening, leaving you alone in the motel room.
Sometimes it got old, but at times it was nice to enjoy some peace and quiet. This time, you used your moment to finish packing your bag. Once the boys got home, you played it cool, acting like your normal self until they went to bed. Boom, passed out drunk.
Now you were sure they wouldn't hear you leaving, being in such a deep sleep. Just in case, you left your stuff in the bathroom under the sink and snuck out the window.
You emerged into the cold night, unsure of your next move, but sure you were getting out of here. There was of course that little part of you that felt guilty for how Sam and Dean would react. You knew they'd be worried sick, add a mixture of anger in there too. But you were confident in the skills you've gained from them, to be able to do alright on your own. And with that, you set off into the night.

Sam was the first one to wake up later that morning, Dean was still passed the hell out- he did have one crazy night. Sam sat up, expecting you to either have fallen asleep next to him, or on the couch. You were in neither of those places. He saw the bathroom door closed and assumed you were already up and in there.
He stumbled into the kitchen, beginning to make a pot of coffee for him and his brother. He waited around 10-15 minutes to see if you'd come out, but never did. If anything, it was a little too quiet. He cautiously approached the frayed wooden door, softly knocking a few times.
"Y/n? You in there?" After not hearing any sound.
"I'm coming in, okay?" He turned the knob, only to find it was stuck. It was locked. Now he really started to panic, shaking the doorknob hastily. He pushed his entire body weight towards the frame, it didn't take much for the door to give.
Dean finally awoke at the pounding noises from Sam, squinting around the room slowly, clearly still hungover.
Sam noticed the bathroom window open all the way, and how the cold infiltrated the small space. His eyes widened with terror before turning around, stopping in his tracks when he noticed a note taped to the mirror.
'Please don't worry, I'm alright. You don't have to come looking, I will come back when I'm ready.'
"Dean!!"
"What! what. What time is it?" He groggily whined.
"Time to go." Sam quickly let out, beginning to pack their things.
"Why. What's got you in such a hurry?"
"Y/n is gone." He bluntly stated.
Something arose in Dean that quickly made him forget about his hangover. "What do you mean, gone?" He stood up from the bed.
"Gone, Dean. Like, gone. Bathroom windows open, she left a note." Sam shook it in his grasp while continuing to pack. Dean snatched it from him, giving it a read.
"Shit. Alright, let's go."

You were able to make it to the salvage yard by sunrise. An address that you took from the boys list of contacts and addresses. It had a bunch of used cars that were used for spare parts, most of them still being in one piece. You walked the aisles looking at cars before finding one that caught your eye, an old Ford thunderbird. It had some rust, but was still in good shape.
You worked your magic trick Dean had taught you to unlock the driver side door, hot-wired it, and took off. You weren't sure where you were headed, until you saw some signs and billboards for some state parks in Colorado. That looked good, to be able to see some mountains and big trees.
You pulled out your phone to look up some directions when you remembered the gps location on your phone. Shit, your brothers would definitely be tracking you. The only choice you had was to ditch the phone, which you almost did. But, Sam wasn't the only one good at hacking. You pulled over real quick and were able to disable the gps tracker while still keeping your phone on.
"Maybe I should've gone on a solo trip a long time ago." you smiled to yourself.

"What do you mean you can't track her?!" Dean grew annoyed from the drivers seat.
"I don't know!" Sam was getting flustered. "The last known location was spotted around Dodge City, I can't get a current ping on her phone." Sam was beginning to think you smashed it.
"Damnit! She probably stopped by the yard and picked up a car." Dean realized. With your location off and possibly traveling by car, it would be harder to find you.
Sam sighed heavily. "I just don't get it. Why she'd up and leave like that. It's so not like her."
"We're gonna find out."

You had enough driving for the day and figured you were far enough away from running into the boys. You pulled into a motel and got a room for the night. The night was nice, you hadn't ever really had the feeling of being on your own much. No responsibility of having to tag along with Sam and Dean, no hunt on queue. Sure, you still had to be careful, but you weren't planning on going venturing out into the night.
You spent the night with some take out and a movie in your room, enjoying your privacy and peace and quiet. You slept like a baby, not remembering the last time you slept so good.
The next morning, you were up and at em, packing your things and getting ready to go see some scenic views. Ready to put each town behind you one by one.
༺𓆩༒︎𓆪༻༺𓆩༒︎𓆪༻༺𓆩༒︎𓆪༻༺𓆩༒︎𓆪༻༺𓆩༒︎𓆪༻
Sam and Dean had also stopped that night at a motel to get some sleep, recharge and figure out a way to track their sister down. Normally, Dean was not a morning person, but with his sister missing he didn't get much sleep. It was bright and early, he was returning from picking up coffee for Sam and himself. He couldn't help but admire the pretty red weathered thunderbird in the parking lot.
A realization struck him as he rushed back to his room. "Sam, do you have the number for the used car yard in Dodge?" Dean rushed in, forgetting about their coffees and bombarding Sam.
"Think so, why?"
"We gotta call and ask which of their cars have gone missing, if any." He hurried. Sam flipped through pages and took his phone out when he found it. Sam dialed and talked to the office manager who did happen to have one car missing from yesterday.
"He said a red Ford thunderbird."
Dean's eyes widened and pushed the curtains out of his way, shocked to see it was gone. He opened the door, rushing out to the parking lot, then to the motel office.
"Hey, do you know who was driving that red thunderbird?" Dean asked the front desk man.
"Sorry man, just started my shift. Who's askin'..."
Dean paused, thinking for a moment. "A very worried father." He put a sorrowful hand to his heart.
The man looked down at the guest book, flipping a page. "I could give you a name. Do any of these sound like your daughter?" He began to read off a list of names, the guest list from last night.
"Alanis Singer"
'Shit' He thought, Dean knew that as one of your aliases. One of your favorite singers and Bobby's last name. He tossed a quick 'thanks' before rushing out.

You spent almost all day at the state park. You walked one of the trails that passed some of the near mountains. It was so cool being able to see the snow on the tips of the peaks in the beginning of spring. The smell of pine trees encompassed the fresh air around you. Something about the vast miles of nature and the pure fact that you were alone settled something in your core.
It wasn't often, actually never that you got time like this to feel free, no stress of running away from death, no constant shadow over your shoulder.
After your walk, you found a lookout point to park you car, you sat outside near it while writing in your journal. The sun was going to set soon, so you figured this would be a beautiful area to end your day before heading to another motel. Your journal looked almost identical to John's, except it was a dark maroon color. Sam gifted it to you for your 13th birthday, he wanted you to be able to document things. Anything really, but you think he just wanted you to be able to have an outlet to jot things down in case you didn't want to talk to them. You thought it was a little cheesy at first, but you came around to the idea, especially in a moment like this.
You took in every minute of this day, these moments, not knowing how soon it would end. You knew your brothers would find you eventually. You just didn't think it would be today.
"Care to explain yourself, missy?" A voice made you jump.
"Are you serious?! How the hell did you find me?" You quickly grew angry. All of the time spent reaching a state of peace today just got thrown out in two seconds.
"You might've stumped me with the phone, but you forgot about traffic cams." Sam gave a pitied smirk.
"rrrgghhh, well you came out here for nothing, because I'm leaving." You hurried to try and get back in the your car when Sam stepped in front of the door.
"Sam, seriously stop. I'm not in the mood." You warned.
"Y/n/n, why are you doing this? Whatever it is, help us understand." He tried his words.
"So, you didn't read my note, huh?" You sassed.
"Sure did, doesn't explain why you just up and left in the middle of the night." Dean spoke.
"Fine, I'll come home with you guys, if you promise to forget this ever happened." You tried storming past them but were stopped by Dean's grip.
"Stop! Let go of me!" You shouted, Dean stepped back in surprise, not used to seeing you act out like this.
"Sweetheart, what is going on?" He asked half saddened, half raged.
"Ugh! It's nothing. Can we just go, if you're gonna make me..." You urged.
"No! You had us worried, and made us drive a state over to find you. You are our responsibility, you can't just disappear!" Dean spiraled.
"Maybe I want to disappear!!" you shouted, earning silence out of the two.
"What do you mean, bug?" Sam asked softly.
You tried your best to speak strong, holding back frustrated tears that threatened to come falling out. "I don't know..." you thought you've never sounded smaller in your life. You knew your brothers were looking at you with those sad, confused eyes. You didn't dare look up yet, but neither were saying anything which meant you had to explain.
"I just... never feel comfortable. We're always running from something, there's always a threat, even when there's not. Even when we have downtime, it's like, something always feels unsettling."
"y/n..."
"It scares me. But I know I'm not supposed to be."
"Sweetheart, it's okay to be scared. I know, your life isn't typical. A lot is asked of you. It's okay if you're overwhelmed." Sam reassured.
"It's not just that, Sam. When will it ever end? I keep searching for something to look to for hope and I can't." You deflate.
"Well, it's sort of a part of growing up. Things aren't as easily sugar coated anymore." Dean came in.
"I think what Dean's trying to say..." Sam eyed him. "Is that, there comes times like this where everything feels hopeless. We just have to start finding our own reasons to keep up hope, or else, we'll just lose it."
"That's kind of what I was trying to do here..." You glanced off into the tree line.
"You know what keeps me going?" Dean asked you.
"What?" You looked up at him finally, curious to finally hear his heartfelt side come out.
"You. And, Sammy of course." Dean nudged, you hid a soft smile.
"Seriously, without you guys... I wouldn't have much to keep me going. So, you just gotta find those things to keep you going. Even if it's small." Dean said.
"I guess."
"Look, maybe it can be too much at times. If you ever feel like you need to get a break- like this one, or... possibly let you go stay with Jody, or Bobby once in a while, we can do that." Sam suggested. "Overall, think you do a hell of a job handling what you do at your age. Most 16 year olds sweat the small stuff, so, remember your strength too. You're capable of handling a lot more than you think." Sam finished.
"Yeah. I guess I'm pretty cool."
Your brothers laughed a bit, happy to see their sister come down from this. "Alright, so chick flick over? Did we get the first breakdown out of the way?" Dean joked.
"Okay, don't get too cocky." You pointed. "I still want to enjoy my peace in driving this car back.
"Back to the scrap yard, not back with us....right?" Sam justified.
summary: you have some friends over for a sleepover, sam and dean are over it! lol
Silence had filled the library for a couple of hours now. Today was quite the special day for you. Sam and Dean were letting you have a sleepover... at the bunker. Of course the only reason why they were allowing it was because it was just Claire and Alex. If it were any friends or people from school or sports, it would be a firm NO.
You were of course as excited as ever, you didn't have a lot of chances to have girl time. And the be able to have friends over in the place you called home for once, felt important.
You had been mentally planning out an entire itinerary in your head and sharing ideas in the group chat you had with the girls. It would be such a fun and perfect night. Alex had taken a day off work to give her a longer weekend, and Claire had sacrificed some time away from the new person she'd been seeing. It had been a while since you'd all had time to catch up and hang out.
"Hey guys, what would you think if us three set up bunk in the library tonight. That way Alex could set up her projector and we'd have enough room for movies and xbox of course." you approached your brothers posted up at a table in the library.
They looked up with raised eyebrows and a confused face. "Uhhh, I mean... would you guys be okay with that?" You rephrased based on their emoting reaction.
Dean deflated dramatically slow. He and Sam weren't keen on the idea in the first place, but knew you'd keep going on about it if they would have danced around the idea.
"She doesn't ask for much, Dean... having some people over would be nice, don't you think?" Sam reasoned earlier.
"When is this happening?" Dean checked.
"Later this evening, I'm about to go meet up with them so we can grab food and then we'll be on our way back here together. I can text you when we're on the way, and do you think it would be okay if they parked in the garage- we have enough room. And don't worry about anything going short, I took the liberty of making sure there's enough drinks and snacks in case one of us wants something. That way none of your guys' stuff runs out. And-"
"Okay. Loud and clear hun." Dean cut off your rambling, holding a pinch of his fingers to his temple as if trying to fight off a vicious migraine.
You smiled knowingly. "Sorry. Well, I'll see you guys later."
"Be safe, have fun." Sam waved kindly.
You suppressed your excitement as you skipped to gather your things before heading out.
"Man, I haven't seen her this excited about something since we took her to the aquarium that one year." Sam laughed to himself.
"Dude, I don't think I'm ready to have three screaming girls around here for the next twenty-four hours. I'm beat." Dean breathed out, taking another swig of beer.
The three of them had just finished a case about a day ago. It was a simple hunt, made complicated by the chain of events that occurred. Their brains were all fried. The two were in surprise that you even had any energy left at all.
Two and a half more hours passed after you left. The calming silence was all of a sudden replaced with mixed noises. The three of you pulled your cars in simultaneously, bass from your music rattling your door speakers could be heard through the thick walls of the bunker. As that round of noise quieted. A big burst of the door opening revealed more.
The three of you stumbled down the stairs and flooded into the bunker. You had takeout bags hanging on your elbows alongside your purse. Claire and Alex had their overnight bags which they dropped to the side once they got up to the library.
Your giggling died down a bit once you were met with Sam and Dean's astonished expressions.
"Hey there, you two." You caught up with your breath.
"So what happened to texting us." Sam broke the silence while Dean already began gathering his things off the table.
"Oh! My bad, time got away from us I guess." You gestured.
"Did you- guys have something to drink..." Sam suspected.
"Well, yeah. Possibly a little." Claire chimed in, holding in her laughs. "We weren't planning to but then when we walked in they had this bingo night going on, so we decided to play a few rounds. And THEN-"
"Oh YEAH!" The three of you erupted into giggles. "There was this dude who-"
You each took turns rambling on about a story that had you almost rolling on the floor.
Sam and Dean awkwardly stood between you all, very different moods going on there. "Alright, guess we're kicked out then..." Dean started to make his way toward the den.
"Whaat- you guys can totally stay and hang if you wanna." Alex lightly buzzed offered.
"Oh my god, noooo. They might kill the vibe of girl time, I mean look at them." You pointed your hand in their direction. Sam's head slowly did a double take, looking half hurt half confused.
"I mean, I know you guys are tired. That's what I meant.. But you can share the twenty-four pack we brought home..." You're eyes twinkled with generosity, holding up the variety box of high noons.
Sam's face twisted with disgust. "Those are worse than the beer Dean buys."
Dean whipped around. "No one's asking you to drink it..." He rolled his eyes.
Claire started taking things out of her duffel, setting a blanket on the couch. "Either way, I don't think they'd want to watch chick flicks." she teased.
"I'm out." Dean vanished into the hall.
"We'll leave you to it." Sam gestured a peace and followed Dean.
The camaraderie continued to express as the two men retreated to the den, where they could at least have a space of entertainment for themselves.
"Pfft. Next weekend, we'll have guy time. See how she likes it." Dean joked as he plopped down in his recliner.
"Yeah? She'd probably enjoy that just as much." Sam replied.
Just then they both jumped at a playful scream erupting from one of you three. "HEY! Careful."
"This is gonna be a long night." They both sighed.
summary: Sam and Dean's little sister gets curious and pokes around in their weapons bag, almost firing off a pretty hefty mistake.
word count: 1.6k
The Winchester's little sister was growing up, y/n was now 13 and had been attempting to gain her brothers trust day by day. Always wanting to show them that she was mature, trustworthy enough to be included in their not so secretive job. Y/n had caught on eventually, even if it was by mistake.
Before she was old enough to stay in motels on her own, without worrying Sam or Dean, she'd stay with Bobby most of the time or other hunter friends along the way. The stress of a shifter hunt was getting to the boys one night, explaining the case so far to Bobby, only for y/n to sneak up on them in the hallway. At 9 years old, she overhead it all. At first, being frightened and not wanting anything to do with it. Fast forward to now, the idea of this being apart of her family's life- was setting in. It wasn't as scary as it used to be, and y/n was slowly becoming more interested.
Sam and Dean always feared her interest in hunting would grow, so now that it had, their strict ways leveled up a bit.
Y/n was going on hour 9 of being in the motel room by herself. Boredom becoming increasingly suffocating. Sam told her not to wait up, being that it could be another late hunt. She couldn't help not being able to sleep, some nights she would succumb if she couldn't find anything to occupy herself. Other nights, she'd have to get creative.
After changing the tv channel for the 87th time, she tossed the remote aside, letting her limbs flop onto one of the beds. Y/n raised her head, looking around to then spot something that had been there the whole time- her brothers weapons bag. A navy blue duffel with black handles sat deflated on the floor near the kitchenette. Being that Sam and Dean had only left for a small overnight hunt, they packed light, leaving the majority in the bag.
Y/n fell surprised for a moment, not expecting them to leave it behind. Suddenly hoping they would be okay, not having any backup weapons. But her curiosity began to peak over her worry. She stood up, walking over to the bag to pick it up and place it on the table. She unzipped the nylon and was met with a bunch of things, which all looked to be kind of cool.
She picked up a long machete, with a leather wrapped handle and shiny blade that was on top. Turning it and setting it aside. Y/n continued to pick through the pile, finding a set of brass knuckles, some cases of bullets, a small locked box she couldn't open which annoyed her.
She pulled out a long semi-automatic shotgun, not knowing how to see if it was loaded, she put it to her shoulder and pretended to shoot it.
"Peoww." she titled it up, a slight smirk finding her.
Dean did show her how to load and unload a gun. He briefly showed her how to shoot, but the lesson was short lived, as y/n almost shot herself in the foot when practicing how to load.
Y/n slid the shotgun back into the bag, next picking up a 44 magnum revolver. She liked the sleek barrel and the grippy handle. She turned it around to slide the barrel to the side, seeing it was not loaded she held it up. Pointing the gun at the wall, she pulled the trigger, hearing the click. She smiled, pulling it back.
"I think that one would've been a bullseye." She whispered to herself.
After spinning the barrel a few times, she set it down on the table, and picked up another gun- a desert eagle. She lit up, recognizing the gun as one Dean showed her how to use. Although, she couldn't remember how to release the clip.
Just as she was fidgeting with it, Sam and Dean unlocked the door and strolled in. Surprised to see y/n still up, lights on, sitting at the table with a gun in hand. She didn't have time to react and hide them.
"Shouldn't you be in bed." Dean closed the door behind them, expression shifting when he saw what she had gotten into.
"Y/n, what are you doing?" Sam rushed over in concern. "Give me that-" He reached out to take the gun, y/n pulling her hands back refusing to hand it over.
"Y/n, that's not funny. Hand it over." Sam was serious, not serious to the point where he was mad, just sounded tired.
"No. I know how to use it." Y/n straightened her shoulders, sitting poised.
"Okay, that's great. Let's put the guns away." Sam was a bit fed up, y/n could hear it in his voice.
Dean turned around, done emptying out his pockets. "You shouldn't be playing with these." He started placing items back in the duffel bag.
"I'm not playing, I'm practicing." Y/n corrected.
"No. No, you should not be handling weapons, period- especially when we aren't here." Dean amped up the firm tone in his voice. He tried extending his hand to take the gun this time. Y/n turned away, standing up from the chair.
"Y/n..."
"You should show me how to use the other ones in your collection." She smiled, slightly holding the gun up to the back of the room.
"Y/n, you know we've talked about this. You're not coming hunting with us, you're still young and it's not safe." Sam reminded her.
"I'm not talking about hunting, I know I'm not quite ready yet. I just think Dean should finish teaching me how to shoot."
"Yeah, sure. But that lesson is not happening right now, it's late and you should be in bed." Dean pointed to the bed.
"I am almost 14, I should be able to stay up later, and know how to shoot good, and know about whatever special item is in that locked box."
"You do not need to be handling a grenade." Dean raised his voice in concern.
"There's a grenade in there!?" Y/n gasped excitedly.
"Look, we can talk about all of this in the morning. Now please, give me the gun." Sam stepped closer.
"Why." y/n sassed a little playfully. "This isn't a game, y/n. Now." Sam towered closer.
"Can you at least just show me where the clip release is..." y/n begged, fidgeting with the gun as Sam grabbed the barrel.
"Wait, Sam... c'mon." She strengthened her grip. "Y/n- be careful... You do not want to be tugging on a loaded gu-"
BAM.
Y/n's finger slipped and pulled the trigger, firing a bullet. Barely missing Sam's side, flying behind him and embedding a bullet in the drywall above the baseboard. Some dust crumbled, a puncture now formed in the wallpaper.
Y/n let go and stood back in surprise.
Sam and Dean looked back, at each other, then at y/n.
"Y/n, what the hell!" Dean yelled.
"Y/n, I told you to drop it. These things are not toys!" Sam raised his voice, chest rising and falling from the quick burst of adrenaline.
Y/n could only look forward in shock, eyes wide seeing the small hole busted through the wallpaper. Her confident, sure feeling self quickly diminished and was replaced with sudden fear and guilt.
Her eyebrows folded, eyes starting to well with tears paired with a quivering lip. She breathed in a sharp breath, taking a step back.
Sam's face softened at the frightened girl. "I'm sorry." she took in a breath. "I-I almost shot you." the tears flowed. She hid her face in her hands.
Sam turned around, taking the clip out, handing it and the gun to Dean. He came forward, placing gentle hands on her shoulders to guide her into a hug.
"It's okay." He simply said, lowering his voice. Y/n huddled into him, breathing sharp and quick. He gave her a moment before pulling back.
"You see why these things shouldn't be toyed around with, right?"
y/n nodded, sniffling. "We just want you to be safe, and practice safe, yeah?" Sam raised his brows, earning a relieved small smile up at him. Relief that she didn't shoot her brother, and that her other brother didn't blow up on her.
"As much as I wanna tell you how bad of a move that was, I think- well I hope you learned a lesson." Dean approached, arms crossed.
"Definitely." She lightly spoke.
"K, now get to bed." Dean ordered. Sam patted her shoulder.
"Hey, and uh... maybe if we have some time this week, I'll take you shootin'. Clearly we need to start again." Dean shrugged his shoulders.
Y/n turned around, sitting at the side of the bed. "That'd be great." then pulling the covers over her.
"I'm locking this in the trunk." Dean picked up the duffel.
Sam nodded, walking over to the other bed, taking a seat on the edge. He glanced over his shoulder at a dozing off y/n who was mostly pretending, still shaken over the incident.
Sam thought for a moment, having one of those brotherly moments to himself. He looked over at the bullet sized hole in the wall, huffing to himself. "Sure is my crazy, spunky little sis."
Y/n turned over to her side, opening her eyes. "Sorry again for almost shooting you, Sammy. Kinda scared me."
"Well, it should. Dean's probably more pissed than he's showing, but bet he won't let you forget that one."
"Oh, trust me. I won't forget it either." y/n sighed.
warnings: active shooter/lockdown situation, mentions of death. Nothing graphic.
a/n: writing this was a careful process since this is such a sensitive subject. I hope this issue can come to an end, it needs to. It's truly disheartening to know this happens.
This Tuesday morning in the bunker was ordinary, like no other. Y/n snoozed her alarm, dozing off lightly before Sam came in to wake her up for the second time.
She recoiled at the sudden shiver, cold air hitting her when Sam yanked her blanket off the bed. "C'mon kiddo, you gotta get up. Dean's driving you today." Sam cautioned, earning a frustrated groan from her.
Y/n hated Tuesdays. It was her least favorite day of the week, proceeding Monday but not close enough to Friday. Eventually, dragging her weight out of bed, she got ready for school. She passed by the kitchen, backpack slung over her shoulder on one strap. Sam caught glimpse of y/n, skidding over to the door frame.
"Hey, sorry... I didn't have time to make anything this morning, but here, take this with you." He handed her a pop tart, her favorite flavor- cherry, in hopes of making up for not having breakfast prepared. She flashed back a tired smile. "Thanks."
Sam had always been enthusiastic on school mornings, knowing it wasn't something that was fun for y/n, but lately, it was going good. With the three of them living in the bunker now, it meant y/n didn't have to switch schools anymore. She was able to attend the high school within district distance of the bunker, thirty five minutes away, but it was better than having to leave mid year and start over again somewhere else.
Normally Sam drove due to Dean's lack of willingness to get up early, but was his turn today since Sam was heading out to go interview some folks. Dean had plans to go shop, stock up on some hunting essentials. He pulled up along side the curb at the side entrance of the school.
Y/n crinkled her wrapper and gripped her backpack, turning to get out. "I'll pick you back up here at 3." Dean stared out the front windshield. She turned her head, eyebrows raised. "You?"
"Yeah, if Sam doesn't hurry his ass up."
She laughed a little. "Ok, cool. Bye." she threw a hand up as she walked up the small hill. He smirked, raising a few fingers off the steering wheel before pulling away.
That was the last time he'd see her.
~
It was 11:01 am when Sam's phone rang once. He was in the middle of talking with a local, silencing the buzz without looking. Not even a minute later, another ring. He ignored the notification until he returned to the car, looking to see the two back-to-back missed calls from y/n.
He dialed back, listening to the line ring once before being cut to voicemail. Figuring y/n had called during passing periods and was back in class, he called Dean.
"What." He answered rather fast.
"Hey, did y/n call you at all?"
"Get to the school, now." Dean's voice was low, firm. On the verge of breaking.
"Okay, why-"
"Just get there, Sam!!" Dean yelled through the speaker. "Y/n is in trouble."
~
Dean's phone rang at 11:04 am. He set down some items in his arms, halfway through an aisle at the outdoor supply store.
"Hello?" Expecting a voice to respond on the other end. He was met with silence for a few seconds. "y/n?" Dean was a move away from hanging up, then he heard the heavy breathing. "Y/n." His voice was firm, confused at such an unusual call.
"Dean?" Her voice barely a whisper, almost not able to make out her words. "I... we need help."
"Y/n, what's going on?" He paused, browsing the aisle. His voice serious, but not entering a concerned state yet. It was hard to decipher her tone.
"Someone has a gun.... inside. They're going after people."
Dean's jaw clenched, hearing the concerning break in her voice. "What do you mean? Who's there? Where are you right now?" Dropping everything and fleeing the store. His heart pounding, increasingly faster as the line grew quiet again.
"Y/n?"
"I'm hiding-" more silence followed her quiet voice.
"y/n listen, I'm coming okay.... stay there. I-"
The call then ended, or dropped. Not sure which, Dean felt a pit of worry, puddle more with each passing minute. He questioned calling her back, finally grasping the weight of the situation. It wouldn't be good to call back, risk a ringtone giving away her position. He cursed out loud, pressing his foot heavier into the gas pedal, challenging the impala's engine and pushing it to the limit.
Dean blinked wildly at his phone, glancing up at the windshield intermittently. He attempted drafting up a text with his thumb, angrily tossing the phone aside when he couldn't keep up. Before he knew it, he was at the school. Tires skidding against the asphalt next to the curb. Dean got out frantically, staring up at the same hill he saw y/n step up as she walked to the building this morning, this time swarmed with red and blue emergency vehicle lights.
Dean almost didn't notice Sam rushing across the street, eyes wide at all the commotion. "Hey, hey, I got the text. Where is she?!" he grasped Dean's shoulder.
Dean's head turned on an instant. "What text?!"
"The school sent out an emergency notification. Where is she?" Sam huffed, catching his breath.
"I don't know..." Dean was short with him, storming off towards the police cars and yellow tape.
An officer stepped forward, seeing the towering men approach with purpose. "Please, gentlemen. You need to stay over there outside of this boundary." He pointed in directions they didn't even pay attention to.
"I need to get in there." Dean tried pushing past the man but was already being pushed back, meanwhile another officer noticing the high tension made his way over. "Sir you nee-"
Sam noticed Dean slip a hand into his coat, either to pull out an FBI badge- or something else Sam didn't want escalating the confrontation. He stepped in front of his brother. "We need to know where our sister is. Her name is y/n, uh y/n singer." she was enrolled under Bobby's name ever since Sam and Dean were legally declared dead.
The officers expression fell. "I understand, we'll know where her wearabouts are soon." He spoke over his radio, passing along the message to police inside.
"What do you mean? Have any of you even checked?" Dean raged in frustration, losing his patience by the second.
"We've located the perpetrator, who has been taken into custody, and have several officers sweeping the building." The officer responded.
A pickup of movement in the distance over the officer's shoulder caught the brothers attention, to a bunch of cops escorting groups of students out one of the side doors. Everyone was ushered towards a safe area, the sounds of adults calling out names and commotion among the students who came out in staggered patterns.
Dean picked up his strides again, this time towards the groups of people looking around frantically. "Y/n!....."Y/n!!?" He called out as he reached another yellow tape boundary, being met with another person telling him to stay behind it.
At a loss, he turned to his brother. "Sam?" who returned almost the same worried look. "What do we do..."
"Um, they- they're probably still looking. Lot's of places to check." He tried convincing himself, rather than finding an answer for Dean.
The two stood, pacing, checking all exits in sight almost every minute. It was one of the many times in the boys lives they felt helpless. The first time she fell seriously ill, seeing the disappointment cover her when they had to move again, having to leave her with bobby after getting sucked into the worst hunts, when she got her first period, watching her get yelled at by John during their last conversation, breaking her ankle in the middle of the woods.
This time could never compare.
"She called us. She trusted us, relied on us to save her. I didn't even answer her, and now-" Sam stopped, feeling his throat contract. He struggled with the thought now of not being there for y/n when she was in distress, not being able to tell her it was all going to be okay. He wasn't able to be that person this time where she could pour all of her trust into him, feel safe and protected.
Dean couldn't conjure up a reply. He was too preoccupied in his own head, standing frozen while staring at the scenes playing out in front of him. The two waited almost an hour before law enforcement began going through a roster of students and staff. They stood there, waiting, as students one-by-one found parents or rushed off the grounds. The crowd grew smaller, and smaller, until there was close to no one.
"Hey, is that it? Did you guys happen to find anyone else inside? Is anyone injured that was taken away? I just-" Sam bombarded more people on the scene.
"There were a few injured that have been brought into EMT care, we took names- I'm sorry, but none of those few were your sister, neither matching name or description. I'm afraid anyone else inside has suffered fatal trauma."
Sam and Dean felt their world stop. No, there was no way that could've been the case. Y/n knew how to fight, be strong, there was no way she wasn't okay.
"a-are you sure? There must be so-"
"I am, truly sorry." The man's tone low and sincere. "We will be reaching out to each students emergency contact..." His voice started to blur out of recognition, Dean only able to hear his heartbeat pounding in his ears. Sam heard bits and pieces of 'forensics' and 'county coroner'. He turned around, taking in the busy scene still creating commotion, only to spot a squad car with a shadow of a person in the backseat.
Sam pivoted and started running back to the truck he drove. "Hey! Sam, what do you think you're doing man?" Dean chased after.
"I'm just- gonna go, check out whoever they brought into custody." His head tilted up towards the police vehicle in the distance. A stiff expression furrowing his brows as he tried not to lose it all.
"Sam, no. You're not-"
"I need to do this Dean. I wasn't there for her, when she called me. I saw it, but I ignored it for an interview that was useless anyways."
"Stop that. You couldn't have known." Dean began.
"It's our job to know what's going on, and she was trying to tell me!" Sam felt his sorrow building up into anger.
"Our job right now is to be here, and we are... We need to be here, for y/n." Dean paused, his eyes searching Sam's. Searching for the logical, level headed Sam, who he needed right now in order to stay sane.
Dean lowered his head, taking a moment to think. He felt sick and was doing everything he could to hold it together.
"If she's not coming out here on her own, then we're gonna wait for her. We will be here for when she does."
The sentence sunk in deep. This was the moment when both brothers realized she was really gone.
~
Later that night, Sam and Dean resided back in their rooms. Alone, little energy left to form words, the two of them simultaneously checked on the missed voicemails they'd received throughout the day. Messages from interviewees, law enforcement... they both noticed the one unread text notification, sent to the both of them, in which they opened and read:
"In case I don't get the chance, I love you both. Thank you for sacrificing everything for me, for us, all of it."
The tears flowed freely down Sam's face, he let his phone fall from his grasp. No mind to the rounded corners hitting the smooth cement.
Dean on the other hand paused, seeing his drafted up text underneath y/n's sent one.
