“Magnus' weapons wouldn't come online. The armour's HUD only flashed low energy warnings, frantic and overlapping. In lieu of a more aggressive, code-approved approach, Magnus said, "We do." Him and Sixshot had met eight times now, fighting one on one each time. The last two had not only ended in a draw, but had concluded with Sixshot casting him a look he had no data to draw on for interpretation before leaving without taking the obvious potshots. Magnus had taken the pity to mean he was slipping. Everyone in the armour slipped eventually, after all.”

Oooh, so! I did this fic as a commission actually, and it was an interesting challenge. Sixshot isn't a super well defined character in IDW- the most you really get for meaningful characterisation is just his (not... great tbqh) Spotlight one-off issue back in phase one, so. I enjoyed writing this one.

Anyway, I liked the idea of bringing in the idea Sixshot and Magnus had fought a lot as a nod to the JP G1/Headmasters continuity where they do in fact face off in a sort of "anime rivals" context (at which point uhhhh. sixshot totally bodies magnus immediately bc what is G1 for if not killing off old characters so you can sell the new toys. hey ho. chromedome is here now!!!) I was thinking specifically of Magnus' willingness to go one-on-one with Overlord, another phase sixer, in MTMTE, and why he might think he had any chance of that going well. The answer is he went up against Sixshot, but Sixshot has more of a kind of code of honour for how to fight opponents than Literally Fucking Overlord TM, so the comparison later backfired on him.

Another thing I liked playing with here and in this fic generally is the weird kind of fatalistic bent that canon hints at re: taking the armour on during the war. I think it dovetails nicely with Sixshot's IDW characterisation also being this really fatalistic take! A lot of Magnus' feelings at the start of MTMTE basically go back to him not having ever had an idea as to what to do after the war, especially in the "Magnus" role specifically, because the entire thing is built around the war. In retrospect, when you reread it after the reveals of Remain in Light, that feels a lot like there was a tacit acceptance this was because nobody expected him to survive the war.

So I really liked throwing that against IDW Sixshot's really bleak and almost like, by contrast self-accepting lack of care for anything not only outside the war, but during it, too.
