❛ aren’t most  men  bigger  than  you  ? ❜   sixon  asks,  tilting  his  head.  from  anyone  else,  it  might  have  carried  a  teasing  tone.  might  have  even  been  sarcastic,  biting  or  a  backwards  kind  of  comforting.  but  from  sixton,  it’s  an  observation.  nothing  tethered  with  any  sort  of  emotional  carryover  or  intent,  simply  a  factual  conclusion.  he  doesn’t  even  look  up  from  his  notes.

❛ in  any  case,  i'm  not  sure.  i’m  not  privy  to  the  minds  of  those  who  can  make  such  speeches.  they’re  a  breed  unto  themselves. ❜   sixton  doesn’t  talk  a  lot.  maybe  it’s  a  little  obvious.   ❛ what  kind  of  things  are  they  saying  ? ❜

❛ i hope it’s  something  you  can  actually  use, ❜   sixton  says,  shuffling  his  weight  from  foot  to  foot.  he’s  still learning  about  everyone——it’s  all  to  new  for  someone  who  tends  to  move  as  slow  as  he  does.  but  he  listens,  sixton  does.  he  watches,  hangs  back  &  packs  away  parcels  of  information  for  later  use.  he  notices  the  types  of  pencils  she  uses  for  sketching,  studied  the  portrait  in  the  lobby  to  get  a  feel  for  technique  &  how  that  would  correlate  to  brushes.  most  of  his  connections  used  ink  pens  for  illustrations,  but  they  helped  him  through  the  process  of  picking  proper  brushes  &  kits.  it’s——expensive.  he  never  had  that  much  by  way  of  actual  means,  but,  well,  it’s  worth  it.  he’s  not  the  type  to  give  gifts  before  either,  so  maybe  this  is  a  way  of  making  up  for  it.   ❛ merry  christmas,  adelaide. ❜

❛ moving out  west,  things  got  lonely, ❜   sixton  says  lightly.  perhaps  too  lightly.  just  on  the  edge  of  uncomfortable——things  like  this  press  too  close  to  events  he’s  very  much  boxed  &  buried  in  the  ground.  he  shrugs.   ❛ i  suppose  i  was  a  little  young  for  it.  fifteen,  then.  i  worked  as  an  orderly  in  the  hospital. ❜   that  had  been  ...  an  experience.  it  was  only  through  deidre’s  recommendation  that  people  even  looked  his  way.  he  doesn’t  know  what  deidre  wrote  in  that.  it  wasn’t  something  he  should  be  concerned  about  anyway.  in  some  ways,  he  regrets  the  move  to  london.  the  air  is  worse  here.  it  seems  to  be  getting  worse  for  him.  &  he  hadn’t  had  much  time  for  friends,  anyway.

❛ i  don’t  think  you’ve  been  particularly  unkind, ❜   he  cocks  his  head  &  continues.   ❛ at  least  to  me  or  within  my  general  vicinity. ❜   no,  he  knows  unkind  people.  disagreements  &  differing  opinions  is  only  a  natural  expectation  &  sixton  has  had  far,  far  worse  people  as  coworkers.  it’s——generally  not  a  problem.  he  makes  sure  it  isn’t.  sixton  doesn’t  usually  pay  very  much  mind  to  the way  people  treat  him,  though  he  notices  small  kindnesses.  notices  the  questions  people  asks  ;  their  concern.  she’s  explained  to  him  that  she  felt  grateful  for  his  choice  to  help  miriam  &  there’s  something  there,  sixton  is  sure,  but  he  doesn’t  think  he  has  any  particular  need  to  find  out.  it  surely  has  nothing  to  do  with  him.  ❛ i  have  no  cause  for  concern  or  complaint,  anyway. ❜

he  doesn’t  smile,  because  he’s  not  used  to  it,  but  there’s  a  ghost  of  it  there.  like  someone  trying  very  hard  to  remember  what  sunlight  feels  like  on  his  skin.   ❛ &  i  do  know  that  i’m  a  part  of  this  team.  it’s  a  good  team.  i’m  fortunate  to  have  it. ❜   team  is  easier.  family.  that’s  a  heavy  word.  he  doesn’t  know  how  he  feels  about  it,  but  fortunately,  that’s  not  the  question  he  has  to  answer.

recovery will  take  it’s  time  &  sixton  is  in  no  rush.  he’s  still  in  the  process  of  writing  everything  done,  his  desk  filled  with  different  medical  books  &  rough  sketches  of  everything’s  he’s  seen.  keep  a  record  of  it.  study  it.  cross-reference  with  any  available  material——it’s  been  haunting  him.  what  could  have  done  this  ?  how  can  they  prevent  it  ?  he’s  not  a  doctor  or  researcher;  this  isn’t  exactly  his  purview.

❛ i’m——fine, ❜   sixton  starts  before  breaking  off  suddenly  to  chortle.  his  head  drops  into  his  hands,  fingers  pushing  his  glasses  up  as  he  rubs  his  face.  how  long  had  it  been  since  she  asked  him  why  he  joined  the  institute  in  the  first  place  ?   ❛ i  suppose  i  did  say  i  wanted  a  change  of  pace. ❜  hah.  he  supposes  it  beats  the  aimless  meandering.  it’s  not  quite  a  purpose,  but——there’s  direction.  something  he  can  clearly  contribute  his  efforts  towards  &  he’s  not  sure  what  it  says  about  him  that  he  doesn’t  exactly  dislike  it.  sixton  looks  up.   ❛ but  really,  i  should  be  asking  you  that.  i  can’t  imagine  it’s  been   very  easy  for  you. ❜
