adelaide read the letter twice at her doorway, and then once again on her sitting room sofa, a hand clasped firmly over her mouth for the last two readings.

to say that it was a lot to take in would be an understatement.

she hadn’t known, not quite yet. she suspected it, when six left and five came back, thought that nick had been the only victim of whatever happened. everything else, well— she’d been the warden of too many curios to doubt the rest of his words.

and yet what broke her heart the most was that guinevere didn’t know. innocence was a lofty word to attach to all of it and yet, if any of them could still make any claim to it, guinevere could. or could have, were she still—

she never even took off her coat. instead she folded the letter again, carefully, pocketed it, and marched back out and towards guinevere’s gideon’s door.

      𝐇𝐎𝐖 𝐓𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓𝐋𝐘 𝐂𝐎𝐈𝐋𝐄𝐃 𝐇𝐈𝐒 𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐂𝐋𝐄𝐒 𝐖𝐄𝐑𝐄, with his hand resting on the small of her broad back. atlas nudges her into the nearest alleyway, brow knit in obvious worry. the hand moves to her shoulder, squeezing gently, & he looks into her eyes with a seriousness rarely seen on boyish features.

      ❝ we can leave, ❞ the bard replies, glancing the way they’d came as if he expected someone to be following them. ❝ do you want to? the room was only for tonight, so it’s no real loss. if we leave now, we can make camp somewhere before it gets dark. ❞

for what would your character give their life? (for winnifred)

muse development questions. 

her son. 

she wouldn’t have given her life for her husband, but she would have given her life for her son in a second. if she had got there a few moments earlier - maybe it wouldn’t have stopped his death, but she would have put herself in front of him. 

and life had already been set out for him - this thing that she didn’t want for him but gave him anyway, a literal criminal empire that he would have inherited. 

( who would inherit it now? she doesn’t know. her husband and his sister are dead, and they were the only children. his sister was unmarried, both of their parents are dead, and there are plenty of other members but none of them were from the family. 

does that leave winnie? sort of, yeah. but at the same time, everyone sort of thinks she’s dead. she’s either dead or she killed them, and everyone thinks one or the other. she has no idea what’s happened to their “business”, no idea what’s going on in new york. 

she does know that her parents know she’s alive, because she sends them money. she never receives a response letter from them. she doesn’t know if it means they’re just ... disappointed in her, or if they’re not receiving her letters, or if it’s something else that she doesn’t want to think about. ) 

but she’d have given her life for her son in a second. she would still give her life for her son in a second. if someone - or something - offered her a trade, her life for his, she would take it. she wouldn’t even think of the logistics of it - that it would leave a three year old parentless in the middle of carnage and with a criminal empire at his back - she would just do it. 

but after all of this? now? 

she would have given her life to protect the rest of her group. she never wanted to ... face the bodies of people she knew again and here she is doing it anyway and part of her is angry it was guin and not her.

      𝐇𝐄 𝐋𝐄𝐓𝐒 𝐎𝐔𝐓 𝐀 𝐖𝐄𝐀𝐊 𝐋𝐀𝐔𝐆𝐇, shaking his head ever so slightly. atlas reaches to pat her shoulder & gives a soft, thankful squeeze. ❝ i’ve always been a little bit of a worrier, you know. but it’s easier to pretend that i’m not. ❞ the half-elf’s smile is brief, but sincere.  ❝ really, though. you don’t need to worry about me too much. just got a little lost in my thoughts while i was sitting here, that’s all. ❞

      he stands then, stretching out his arms in a languid way that attempted to convey that he really was alright. the bard chances another look to her, & then offers a cheeky wink. 

      ❝ don’t be too nice to me, andraste. i just might end up falling for you. ❞

barely a week since they’ve started working, the institute still not open to the public, and yet there’s already a commotion. adelaide comes close to dismissing it, letting it sort itself out— but she hears her name being said and, suddenly, she recognizes the voice.

oh. oh no, gideon—

she picks up her skirts in a rush, hurries upstairs, follows the voice to jonah’s office. she didn’t send him a letter personally, didn’t know where to even send it to, she’d just sent it to guinevere’s parents, and now gideon is here, and rightfully angry, and she doesn’t know how to tell him that his sister is gone—

the door to jonah’s office is open, the two men on either side of the grand desk, though their postures couldn’t be more different. still she knocks on the doorframe, loudly enough to interrupt them and call attention to her presence.

“oh gideon— i’m so sorry—”

@soulwept  ---  RANDOM DIALOGUE STARTERS, ACCEPTING!

        Unfamiliar as it was, the high mountains of Tal'Dorei offer no easy shelter  ---  especially for a traveler.  Though Caleb may always know which way is north, which direction he has already come, so does a deep unsettling weight sit on his shoulders, the bones that would be already aching from the cold were it not for the winter-weight coat from Eiselcross, and the flames that he can ever-produce at his fingertips, keeping his way alight as well.  Perhaps it had been a mistake to wander the Parchwood, but after a meeting with the heads of Whitestone as they stand now, it was only a matter of time before Caleb needed a moment to process, a space to clear his head that was not walls lined high with unfamiliar portraits, the crystal that destroyed much of his young life buried deep within its grounds.

        There had been stories passed, stories given from the Grand Mistress of the Grey Hunt before he had left, that make Caleb's eyes flicker this way and that, though hopefully there is nothing to fear.  Yet it would not, and is not, the first time a member of the Mighty Nein has faced an unfamiliar spellcaster deep in the woods, and his eyes meet another's in the half-light of the dusk.  Somewhere, he could have sworn he heard a rattle of bone...  ❝ I've been waiting a long time for you. ❞

      the drow glances sidelong at her, floating silently a few inches from the ground. her question seems to cause him to halt for a few seconds — that confusion etching itself upon his features. ❝ you looked like you could use a few moments of quiet, ❞ he says finally. given essek's previous preference to isolation, he felt as if, perhaps, he might be a little better at recognizing that look on someone else.

      he tilts his head up towards the sky above — perpetually dimmed to blot out the sun, but engineered in a way that would allow them to gaze upon the stars. essek gestures up above, tracing one constellation in particular with the straight line of his index finger. ❝ i've always found them easiest to see here, away from the lights. consider this view a gift & nothing more. what you do with it is your business. ❞
