Rating: G Pairing: Steve Rogers/Tony Stark Fandom: Avengers - Ambiguous Fandom Spoilers: None Title: Caution: Trees Move For: Siylan ~~~~~~ Coution: Trees Move. "Tony?" Steve's breath puffed in the mountain air but the high tech StarkSuit he was wearing kept him from feeling the bite of the cold. "What's up?" Tony asked as he slid to a stop beside the Super Solider. Steve gestured at a sign that read "Caution: Trees Move" with one of his ski poles. "Oh, yeah, I can explain that." Tony said with a sheepish grin. "Is this another one of those explanations that involve a drunken dare?" Steve asked. "No?" Tony said uncertainly. "I mean we were drunk, but it wasn't so much a dare as something that seemed like a brilliant idea when Clint thought of it." "This slope has moving trees on it?" Steve asked looking down a hillside that looked less well groomed then he was expecting. "No? I mean, yes some of the trees move, but really it's this side of the mountain that they're scattered over. That's why this resort is Super Heroes only." Steve gave Tony an incredulous look, "I thought you and Warren just didn't want to deal with paparazzi." "Well, that's why we bought a mountain," Tony said with a nod. "But really it was just an exclusive ski resort until Clint came up with the trees." "This explains why S.H.I.E.L.D. rents the place out." Steve's eyes shot back to the ski slope as a stand of trees slid back deeper into the forest. "Winter training facility. No extra effort needed and they didn't have to hide the building costs in the budget. Where else is Fury going to find an ever changing obstacle course that requires cold weather gear?" Steve looked at Tony with concern in his eyes, and Tony tensed thinking that this was going to be the thing that finally convinced Steve he could do better, or at least saner, than a billionaire genius who drunkenly booby trapped half a ski resort. "Should you be up here without a Suit?" Steve asked. Laughing in relief Tony shook his head. "Oh ye of little faith, Cap. What makes you think these skis are off the rack?" With that Tony set his poles into the snow, called out "See you at the bottom," and launched himself down the slope. The first leg of the course was a straight slalom, but it was rough enough that they couldn't pick up much speed. Steve found himself glad for that because just as the forest closed around them a small tree shot out from the left and slid into their path. He had plenty of time to swerve out of the way but Tony was forced to hit the repulsers on his skis and launch over the tree's top. After that the run became a series of dodges between trees and swerves around hillocks of snow all interspersed with stretches of open but ragged slope that Tony took at break neck speed despite the obvious signs of movement. At first Steve held back, but soon Tony's taunts got the better if him, and their race down the last half left them breathless and laughing at the bottom. ~~~~~ That evening Steve had an already healing bruise on his arm from where he had avoided a fast moving tree only to clip one of the natural trees that lined the slope. But he figured he had faired well considering it took half an hour, and calling in Thor, to get Hawkeye down out of a tree that the archer swore sprang up out of the snow under him despite Tony's protests that the trees could only move horizontally. ~~~~~ AN: I don't know anything about skiing that can't be learned by obsessing over the Winter Olympics and watching a few YouTube videos when I realized Tony and Steve were racing an Alpine Combined course from Vancouver. But I couldn't resist when I saw the (un-shoped) sign on my giftees blog.
