Young Severus Snape x reader Christmas ball
Let's just collectively pretend there are small Christmas balls every Christmas at Hogwarts please ok
There should be though, like, just imagine...
The air was cold. The kind of fresh comforting cold biting on your skin just right. The snow was crunchy in that delicious way that sent tingles through your whole body as you walked across the freshly snow covered grounds. The sky got darker much faster these days. Never quite pitch black like usual with stars, just dark and cloudy but still somehow bright like it did in winter. The ground practically glowed late in the evening, the snow falling softly like powdered sugar coating the heads of students, still outside, building a snowman. Some students left for the holidays, but not too many since the Christmas ball was about to take place in about a week. Still, there was significantly less people around the castle, which was heaven.
You walked, not really sure where, just letting your legs carry you. You really loved winter. The wind was still today, which you were glad about, as you slowly walked looking around you at how beautiful the scenery around Hogwarts was. You stopped on the covered bridge and looked around at all the trees covered in snow. The dark forest always looked so beautiful and mysterious but now, in winter, it was something else entirely. You just couldn't get enough of the sight, it was breathtaking. As you exhaled, puffs of fog formed Infront of you curling before disappearing. Something caught your eye and you looked down, noticing something on the ground, a book. You went closer picking it up, and you knew who it belonged to right away, it belonged to Severus Snape.
You knew him since you shared classes with him, and you saw him carry that book around at all times. You wanted to return to the castle anyway, so you made your way back, and began your search for him. You found him frantically looking inside a bush he sat by quite often, most likely searching for his lost book. You called out softly not wanting to startle him "um, hey, I think I found a book that might belong to you" His head whipped in your direction, looking you up and down before straightening to his full height and looking at the book in your hands. You slowly handed it over, smiling, after he took it checking if it was indeed his. He mumbled a quiet "thanks" you barely registered, you just held your hands in front of you, "..I found it on the covered bridge" Oh, right of course, he remembered going there today. You just nodded as silence fell between you, you just waved goodbye and awkwardly left.
Since then it was as if he was everywhere you went. Suddenly you saw him at breakfast, lunch, everywhere. Every time you went to Hogsmeade and anywhere really he was there. He seemed to notice this as well since he always gave you this weird look, you just smiled a little and walked, you even went to the library at the same time. How this was possible, you weren't sure but ok.
As days went by, people started to talk more and more about the ball. It seemed as if there was nothing better in their lives at times. You rolled your eyes as you passed another group of girls squealing about who asked them out, pathetic. You weren't sure if you were even going to attend. All of it seemed so shallow, like, you've heard about it from older students last year and about how amazing it was and beautiful and absolutely the best experience of their lives and jada jada jada. You couldn't deny you were kind of curious about the decorations but all the people around you just seemed to ruin everything for you. And besides, its not like anyone's going to ask you out, so you were either going to go by your self, or you weren't going. You didn't want to think about this too much anyway, you'll just take a sneak peak inside and leave, yeah.
As you were walking around the corridors you met professor McGonagall. She asked if you were attending the ball, of course. You told her you didn't really see the point in attending and that you were only curious about the decorations. She immediately started to go on and on about why you should definitely attend and that it was only appropriate that you do so, so you told her there was no one that was going to ask you out anyway. She told you that you were a beautiful young "swan" and that there was absolutely going to be some mighty "young lion" that was going to ask you out. She even asked if she should find you a date, perhaps someone from Gryffindor which you declined lightning fast. The last thing you needed was to get paired together with someone like James Potter or Sirius. Yeah, no thanks. Then as if this conversation wasn't humiliating enough she started to tease you about how she noticed you looking at Severus in transfiguration which you denied of course.
You made your way to lunch after that talk, hopefully to forget it ever occurred. And like clock work you walked inside side by side with none other than Severus himself. Speak of the devil i guess. As you sat and ate, you couldn't stop thinking about what McGonagall said to you. Of course you looked like that at Severus. You had a crush on him after all. You just hoped that before, you weren't so obvious but now that McGonagall noticed you began to doubt that more and more. She noticed everything though, so maybe others didn't... you were overthinking every day in class now. But he was so hot you couldn't help falling for him. His hair was at times a bit greasy, but so what, that just happens to all of us. Besides, his good qualities far exceeded his bad ones. He was so smart, brilliant even, tall, pale skin, onyx hair and eyes, beautiful hooked nose......whoops, you were staring. You looked at your plate in a feeble attempt to act like you weren't just burning holes right through his face a second ago. You just hoped he didn't notice, there was some people in front of you so hopefully you weren't that obvious. Maybe he didn't notice. I mean, it would be really nice if he didn't....little did you know that he did indeed notice.
It was Monday of the week the ball was supposed to take place in. McGonagall was giving you charged looks since your talk, which you didn't like very much, but oh well, you just acted like you didn't see her starring daggers at you every time you passed her. You were getting tired of this whole ball thing. You wondered who Severus was going with, or if he was even going at all. You suspected the latter. Suddenly at lunch there was an announcement, everyone who was at school and didn't have a good enough reason not to attend the ball had to. You could hear whines from everyone who didn't want to come, you could see Severus frowning as well. Wow, what were you going to do now. You were great at making up excuses but McGonagall already knew why you weren't coming. This was ridiculous. You did have formal robes just in case this happened, but you really didn't want to attend.
You made your way to the greenhouses to clear your head, passing by some disgusting couples showing each others tongues up their throats. You were going to be sick. In the end you made your way outside instead, walking in the snow. It was really light out today, the snow just miniscule little dots filing through the air. You found your self at the covered bridge again, you looked down. You were really high up, maybe if you jumped and broke a few bones, you could miss the ball. Footsteps broke you out of your thoughts. You turned to the side before seeing Severus. Wow, you really ran into each other everywhere. But this time it looked like he was looking for you, holding something. You looked back Infront of you at the trees covered in snow, the wind picked up, you could smell ice and snow as it blew your hair back from your face. Severus stopped next to you, you looked up at him in question, what could he want- "professor McGonagall said I must give you this, don't ask why me, I don't know either." You took it, thanking him, opening the letter. He just stood next to you, you looked at him again "..she also said I must be present when you read it" he didn't look happy about any of these things. Opening the letter you began to read it, the letter looked like a formal invitation to the ball, why would she.....oh...so this is how she's going to play. You reread it again :
dear y/n
You are the most beautiful swan in the whole school and I wanted to ask if you'd care to join me in the great hall on Christmas Eve under the star covered sky if you would
yes. No.
with love, Severus Snape.
She couldn't be serious. You looked at him and smiled. "You didn't write this, did you ??" Poor soul, being used like this "No, I was forced to deliver it against my will like I don't have better things to do... why" you gave him the letter. He read through it quickly, and you could see his expression getting gradually worse by the second. "..I haven't wrote this, I don't understand why she did this" he said rereading it again as well, it wasn't even his handwriting !! "I think I know why....."
You both made your way back to the castle. You had to look all over the school to finally find her, it was as if she was hiding !! When you finally found her, you caught her off from around a corner. She seemed out of breath. " Professor, we wanted to ask about the letter you made Severus give me" she looked at you raising a brow "...what letter ?" She asked in a feeble attempt to act innocent, don't even try Minnie. "This letter" you said handing it to her, awaiting her reaction. She carefully read through it, taking her sweet time as if hoping someone was going to need her for something and she'd have to leave. "You see, we both didn't want to attend and Severus said he hasn't wrote this" you said getting mildly irritated "he hasn't you say....." She said slow, her voice dripping with fake innocence "no, and he said you gave it to him to deliver it, to me" she looked around for a moment, before looking back at you both "I haven't written this letter miss l/n-" rubbish "-I don't know who wrote this, but it wasn't me, I can assure you, now though that the opportunity has raised-" oh no no no "-it seems now you can both attend the ball together ! Isn't fate just wonderful" There it was ...sight, why, why you. "You will attend, won't you ??" You looked at Severus almost pale with rage, you sighted "yes, of course professor" his head whipped back to you. "oh, well splendid ! have a good day you two" she said leaving humming a tune. "What are you doing ?!" He said pissed turning to face you, you sighted again "We both have to attend, whether we want to or not, she'll make us, and I don't know about you but I don't have a good enough excuse. We can after all leave anytime we want, so we can just go inside and leave right afterwards" he thought about it and sighted deeply in the end. It was the best choice, and he'd rather attend for five minutes with you then all the others McGonagall tried to set him up with before, all the ones that ran away screaming in disgust.
The day came, you haven't talked much to Severus after that day only making up a plan how to leave as fast as you could. You were getting ready in your dorm with a friend. She looked stunning like always. She helped you get ready and you both made your way to the main staircase which you both agreed to meet with your dates under. He waited for you at the bottom of the stairs like you agreed on, other couples making fun of him as he stood there waiting for you. You stepped down the stairs, your eyes widening. He looked so handsome. He had formal robes on, a white shirt, and a black robe on top. He was glaring at everyone. He didn't really even notice you until he looked up at the stairs, and his eyes widened as well. You looked, really good. You finally made it down, joining his side. You waved your friend goodbye before going to Severus. "Hey" you said, damn he looked even better up close. "Hi." He said his voice sounded a little strained. "Are we going inside ?? I'm only here for the decorations" he nodded and you slinked your arm around his bicep, he didn't expect you to touch him at all. You made it inside and, you had to admit, the decorations were worth it. The tables you usually ate at were replaced with these round ones instead. They each had a white table cloth on them and there was around twenty of them. The center of the room was left open. There was also fake snow falling from the ceiling. Five trees in total lined the great hall. One at the far back behind the teachers table that was moved forward, and four more, two on each side of the hall.
You looked at the teachers and there she was, gorgeous as ever, Minnie herself. McGonagall noticed you two and smiled from ear to ear. You and Severus made your way to one of the tables, sat down and began counting the minutes. McGonagall had other plans though, she planned on preventing you two from leaving all night. The first song came on. Everyone danced around you. Soon you were the only ones seated. You looked around again but it was true, you were indeed the only ones sitting. You looked at Severus opposite of you, looking tense. Soon people began to give you looks. You both just glared at them before McGonagall motioned you both to get dancing too. You sighted looking at Severus defeated. He returned the look. In the end it got too far so you just got up and attempted to dance. It was so awkward but, surprisingly, he was a good dancer. His robes felt good under you hand on his shoulder. The fabric felt worn out but in a good way. He had his hand strictly on your ribs not a milimeter lower as you swayed attempting to loose McGonagall's hawk sight and leave already. You had to admit, this was kind of fun. Severus was nice to be around, you just hoped you weren't too insufferable, but so far he looked like he was tolerating your presence pretty well. You almost lost her before she got her eyes on you two again after dumbledore made her spin around like five times without a break. Guess you werent leaving as fast as you'd both like. The song ended and clapping could be heard. You sat back down and a server came to take your drink orders, 14 year old Gilderoy Lockhart. He took your orders flashing you both a blinding smile and left.
Your orders came shortly and you sipped your drinks. Since there were underaged students present, alcohol wasn't allowed so Severus got himself a black coffee. Might as well get some caffeine in his system to help him cope with all of this, and besides, it was free. Another opportunity came when you both finished your drinks and McGonagall seemed engrossed in a conversation with Pomona Sprout about mandrakes. You should never underestimate Minnie though, as she was a multitasker and appeared to have eyes even on the back of her skull. As you sneaked closer and closer to the exit, she swiftly motioned to the band to start playing something upbeat. Waves of people carried you both to the center of the room again with no apparent escape.
Finally you were free after they finished playing and you dashed through the sea of students to the door. Minnie gestured to the still tired band and they played some slow music instead. "May i get your attention please, all students, to the dance floor" she said, wand at her throat to make her voice carry through the whole room. You looked at Severus, he just shook his head hair falling in his face before he extended his pale slender hand to you. You took it and you both took your stance again. This time, he had both of his hands on your waist a little lower feeling bold. Your head rested on his shoulders as you swayed to the slow music. It was a beautiful song. You made eye contact, your eyes boring into his onyx ones. Merlin, he was so pretty. Up close he looked etheral. You both blushed before averting your gazes. Later you rested your head against his chest. You could feel him go as stiff as a board before relaxing. He smelled nice, like dungeons and herbs. He could smell your hair and perfume as well. "...You know, this actually isnt so bad" you mumbled after a while of dancing. You could feel his fingers twitch at your side subtly before tightening their hold.
The song came to a finish, and you could feel the air shifted slightly into something more intimate. You almost didn't want it to end, but you had to focus at the task at hand. McGonagall was nowhere to be seen and you actually made it outside this time. As you stood outside there were couples either making out at every corner or students with broken hearts crying on the staircase. He grabbed your hand and led you to a more secluded area. The sky was long dark, stars showing. You both sat on a stone window sill and just admired the sky. "..wow, the stars are really bright tonight, its been a while since they showed" he watched your profile as you stared up at the sky. A loose strand of hair fell in your face so he reached out and slowly tucked it behind your ear. You turned to face him, surprise written all over your face "..uh,oh sorry" he mumbled withdrawing his hand shakily. "no no, thanks" you mumbled smiling. Damn it he was so nervous, he never expected he'd be alone in this intimate moment with you. He thought you'd just both leave the great hall and bye. Why did he even lead you here, what was he tkinking. Were you expecting something ?? A confession ?? An embrace ?? A kiss ?? He wasn't sure if he could give you neither of those. At least not right now, in this nervous state. But you looked so pretty tonight, the robed you chose complimented your figure, nothing too much or too little, just right. You smelled nice. He always liked the smell of the perfume you used. He caught a whiff of it when he passed you in the hallway every time. Your hair was so smooth when he tucked it behind your ear and....oh, he was staring again...and you were looking back at him.
You just smiled as his eyes widened. "..and here i thought i was the only one staring" you mumbled "well, your sure the most obvious one" he said, a ghost of a smirk on his face "yeah says the one who was looking at me with a slack jaw a second ago" you said smirking yourself now "my jaw was not slack thank you, you should've seen your face at lunch that one time" you blushed "that was- that was unintlentional. For your information i zoned out. I didn't pay attention where i was looking" you said, trying to play it off "excuses excuses" he said now smirking softly. He didn't want to smile since every time he does, people say his smile looks uncanny "yeah ?? then what's your excuse ?? why were you staring at me before??" at that he went silent. What should he tell you. The truth ?? That you looked breathtaking tonight and he wanted to kiss you ?? wait wait wait, what ?? since when does he- "that's what i thought, you don't have, one do you" he looked at you with this unreadable expression "maybe not an excuse, but the actual truth. Though I'm not sure if you could handle it" and nor was he, but fake it till you make it i guess. "what is it then, im curious" you said leaning closer, he gulped loking to the side. What in Merlin's name was he doing. "it's..difficult to put" he said avoiding your eyes "difficult to put the truth ??" you said leaning closer and closer, your voice getting quieter. "yes." he said slowly, each syllable carefully measured, not that he had too much to measure. "well, why don't you try, I'm sure we could figure it out together" you were getting dangerously close now. "i- maybe we could" he said his voice shakier, you were practically nose to nose now. He could feel your warm breath on his cheek.
Now that he thought about it, it was a little cold. "..aren't you cold ??" He said suddenly catching you off guard "what ??" you asked softly "I asked, if you weren't cold" he said his voice more deeper "I um, a little" you admitted leaning back away from him slightly. He shook off his black robe and draped it over your shoulder's. "won't you be cold now ??" You asked, adjusting the fabric "I'm used to it" he said crossing his arms "don't be like that, come closer let's share it" he made a sound in the back of his throat that didn't quite get out, before you were half way in his lap, sitting on his thigh. His breathing got ragged and he was stiff again. "Relax, just, wrap your arms around me so i can drape this over us both better please" he did as he was told and loosely wrapped his long slender arms around you as you draped the slightly oversized robes over you both. You rested your head against his collarbone, his skin was warm here in contrary to the rest of him. You could feel the coldness from his hands seep through your own robes but his hands felt nice on you. You looked up at him again. His eyes scanned your face before he cupped it with one shaky hand. You leaned into it letting your eyes trail over his face too. He leaned closer absolutely unsure of what he was even doing. It was as if some invisible force was drawing him in. You leaned up giving him better access to your lips. A moment and then you could feel something soft, yet firm press against your lips, shakily.
The kiss, or more so peck, was short. When he pulled away, he exhaled shakily through his nose. You just smiled brightly blushing as you cupped his hand on your face before asking "so this was the truth ??" You mumbled "more or less" he responded quietly "...can we kiss again please ??" he nodded and this time you cupped the back of his head, guiding him lower to you, wrapping your arms around his neck. This kiss was longer. His lips were less drawn in a line and actually kissing you more. Your lips were soft and warm against his. He could taste your chapstick. He liked kissing you. You were his first kiss and he hoped he wasnt terrible at this. When you pulled away you cupped his cheek this time. Both of his arms fell to your waist. His cheeks were flushed as far as you could see. You couldn't see too much, since it was dark, but they were warmer to the touch. "what now Severus" he met your eyes sighting "whatever you wish" he mumbled in his barritone voice. "..would you be my boyfriend then ??" You asked in a fleeting moment of bravery"...with pleasure"
You both stayed there like that admiring the stars, cuddled up together, his cheek resting on top of your head, robes wrapped around you like a blanket. It started to snow. You both started to get a little cold, so you made your way back inside the castle. You wandered the halls until you found yourself before the staircase to your house. He wished you a good night, but before he could turn around and leave, you pecked his lips again before leaving him there like that. When he was sure you were inside he traced his lips with his fingers smiling softly, before leaving himself, recalling every moment spent with you tonight with a smile.
