Sharks just signed Jacob Trouba for $8.25 million and I have really mixed feelings about this signing.
From a hockey perspective, I can see the logic. The Sharks desperately needed to address their blue line, and Trouba immediately brings experience, physicality, leadership, and over 800 NHL games to a very young roster. Having someone who's worn a captain's "C" and has been through deep playoff runs could be valuable for a locker room built around players like Mack, Will, Misa, Dickie (and now the younger sharks joining the roster). He also takes some of the burden off the younger defensemen by giving them an established veteran to learn from.
That said... four years is definitely a commitment to say the least, Trouba is 32, and a defensemen who plays a heavy, physical style that doesn't always age gracefully. The contract carries him into his mid-30s, right when the Sharks should be transitioning from rebuilding to seriously competing. If his play declines, that cap hit could become a significant obstacle just as the team needs flexibility to extend its young core.
There's also the opportunity-cost aspect. Moving on from players like Eky while taking on a contract of this size naturally raises questions about long-term roster construction and asset management. It's a gamble that Trouba's veteran presence and defensive impact will outweigh the financial commitment.
So I get why Grier made the move. The Sharks need to stack up on defense, and Trouba unquestionably fills that need today, but will he remain valuable in four years time? That remains to be seen.
The most troubling question of the day is Who got traded....
